      • Effect of storage mite, Tyrophagus putrescentiae extract on production of pro-inflammatory cytokines from human monocytic THP-1 cells

        Sang Jin Jeon,Gi Hun Kim,Hyun Joong Kim,Kwang-Kyu Kim,Sang Kyun Koh,Chi-Young Yun 한국응용곤충학회 2013 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2013 No.10

Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Tp) as a storage mite inhabitats in stored grains, hay, and straw at agricultural areas. T. putrescentiae stimulates an immune response and triggers inflammatory cytokines release, and thus it is a source of allergen that sensitize and induce allergic reactions. Also, T. putrescentiae has been reported to cause asthma and atopic disease by cross-reactivity with Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp). The study on T. putrescentiae in human monocytic THP-1 cells is not enough to understand cytokine expression and pathological mechanisms. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of T. putrescentiae extract (TpE) on production of inflammatory cytokines and expression of mRNA level in THP-1 cells. THP-1 cells are treated with TpE and supernatants were analyzed for the production of cytokines using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). mRNA level in the culture cells was measured by a reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). As a result of this study, TpE significantly induced secretion of interleukin-6, interleukin-8, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) in THP-1 cells in time- and dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that TpE may play a role in contributing to inflammatory disease through stimulation of immune cell. Further research of T. putrescentiae is needed to understand the elucidation of the pathogenic mechanism.

      • A case of angular pregnancy: Is the expectant management possible?

        ( Sung Hye Jeon ),( Ho Yeon Kim ),( Geum-joon Cho ),( Soon-cheol Hong ),( Min-jeong Oh ),( Hai-joong Kim ),( Ki Hoon Ahn ) 대한산부인과학회 2018 대한산부인과학회 학술대회 Vol.104 No.-

Angular pregnancy is defined as implantation of the embryo just medial to the uterotubal junction, in the lateral angle of the uterine cavity and medial to the round ligament. It should be distinguished from interstitial pregnancy because the management of the patient varies according to the diagnosis and it can be emergency conditions. A 29-year-old, parity 0-0-0-0 woman visited our hospital for a routine antenatal examination at 5 weeks and 5 days of gestation. She denied any abnormal medical and surgical histories. Transvaginal sonography showed a gestational sac without fetal heart beat located in the left lateral angle in the uterine cavity. It was difficult to differentiate the cornual pregnancy from interstitial ectopic pregnancy. Initial hCG level at the first visit was 10001.1 mIU/mL. For detailed information, MRI images were obtained at 6 weeks and 4 days of gestation. The radiologic finding was more suspicious of angular pregnancy and the radiologist recommended further observation if clinically indicated. At 7 weeks and 6 days of gestation, fetal heartbeat was confirmed by transvaginal sonography. The pregnant woman had mild lower abdominal cramps and intermittent vaginal spotting which might be a sign of complication that needs surgical treatment. Otherwise, antenatal tests were normal. At the present time of this report, the gestational age is 24 weeks and 1 days and the fetal viability is expected. She does not have any abnormal symptoms and signs. Sonography shows normal uterus shape without protrusion of uterine angle, and fetal development is also within normal range. The thickness of the myometrium is maintained above 3 mm. We report a rare case of angular pregnancy that is being successfully maintained with a literature review. Our case shows that in case of cornual pregnancy suspicious of angular pregnancy, an expectant management with close observation needs to be considered as a treatment option.

Solvent engineering for high-performance inorganic–organic hybrid perovskite solar cells

Jeon, Nam Joong,Noh, Jun Hong,Kim, Young Chan,Yang, Woon Seok,Ryu, Seungchan,Seok, Sang Il Nature Publishing Group, a division of Macmillan P 2014 NATURE MATERIALS Vol.13 No.9

Organolead trihalide perovskite materials have been successfully used as light absorbers in efficient photovoltaic cells. Two different cell structures, based on mesoscopic metal oxides and planar heterojunctions have already demonstrated very impressive advances in performance. Here, we report a bilayer architecture comprising the key features of mesoscopic and planar structures obtained by a fully solution-based process. We used CH3NH3 Pb(I1 − xBrx)3 (x  =  0.1–0.15) as the absorbing layer and poly(triarylamine) as a hole-transporting material. The use of a mixed solvent of γ-butyrolactone and dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) followed by toluene drop-casting leads to extremely uniform and dense perovskite layers via a CH3NH3I–PbI2–DMSO intermediate phase, and enables the fabrication of remarkably improved solar cells with a certified power-conversion efficiency of 16.2% and no hysteresis. These results provide important progress towards the understanding of the role of solution-processing in the realization of low-cost and highly efficient perovskite solar cells.

Temperature Effect on Twin Formation Kinetics and Deformation Behavior of Fe-18Mn-0.6C TWIP Stee

        Joong Eun Jung,Junho Park,Jung-Su Kim,Jong Bae Jeon,Sung Kyu Kim,Young Won Chang 대한금속·재료학회 2014 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.20 No.1

Temperature effect on deformation behavior has been investigated in relation to formation kinetics of twins ina Fe-18Mn-0.6C TWIP steel. Total elongation was found to reach a maximum value of 88% at 200 °C andthen decreased continuously with the increase in test temperature from 300 °C up to 600 °C. This reversedtemperature dependence on ductility could be attributed to the formation kinetics of deformation twins, aswas prescribed by an internal variable theory of inelastic deformation. It was found that twins became moredifficult to form at higher temperatures due to insufficient internal strain energy accumulated to reduce ductilityprogressively in this temperature range. Dislocation glide mechanism became, however, dominant at highertemperatures above 600 °C to increase total elongation following the usual temperature dependence. Finally thestacking fault energy was related with the stability parameter, β, used in the transformation kinetics relation.

      • Efficient Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cells Based on Pyrene Arylamine Derivatives as Hole-Transporting Materials

Jeon, Nam Joong,Lee, Jaemin,Noh, Jun Hong,Nazeeruddin, Mohammad Khaja,Grä,tzel, Michael,Seok, Sang Il American Chemical Society 2013 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.135 No.51

<P>A set of three <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>-di-<I>p</I>-methoxyphenylamine-substituted pyrene derivatives have successfully been synthesized and characterized by 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The optical and electronic structures of the pyrene derivatives were adjusted by controlling the ratio of <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>-di-<I>p</I>-methoxyphenylamine to pyrene, and investigated by UV/vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The pyrene derivatives were employed as hole-transporting materials (HTMs) in fabricating mesoporous TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3/HTMs/Au solar cells. The pyrene-based derivative Py-C exhibited a short-circuit current density of 20.2 mA/cm2, an open-circuit voltage (<I>V</I>oc) of 0.886 V, and a fill factor of 69.4% under an illumination of 1 sun (100 mW/cm2), resulting in an overall power conversion efficiency of 12.4%. The performance is comparable to that of the well-studied spiro-OMeTAD, even though the <I>V</I>oc is slightly lower. Thus, this newly synthesized pyrene derivative holds promise as a HTM for highly efficient perovskite-based solar cells.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2013/jacsat.2013.135.issue-51/ja410659k/production/images/medium/ja-2013-10659k_0005.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja410659k'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Novel Antimicrobial Peptides Identified from Screening of Random Peptide Library by Yeast Two Hybrid Assay

Joong-Kook Choi, In-sook Jeon, So-Hee Jeong, Kang-Duk Choi, Sung Hoon Kim, Hak-Kyo Lee, Seung-Ryul Kim 충북대학교 동물의학연구소 2011 Journal of Biomedical and Translational Research Vol.12 No.4

Antimicrobial peptides are widely found in living organisms and are known to play a critical role in innate immunity. Numerous antimicrobial peptides from diverse species appear to be effective against pathogenic microorganisms of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses. Because antibiotic resistance is a global health issue in the fight against pathogenic microorganisms, there has been an urgent need for development of new antibiotic substances. In the current study, we performed yeast two hybrid screening using Beclin1 bait in order to find new peptide antibiotics from a random peptide library. Two candidate peptides from the screening were expressed in a yeast secretory system of Pichia pastoris and tested for any antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA, MRSA2242, MRSA2250, Lactobacillus casei, and Lactobacillus acidophilus. Disc clear zone assay and spectrophotometric analysis revealed that the two peptides exert a decent activity against the pathogenic bacteria, in contrast to minimal effect on the commensal Lactobacillus strains. Taken together, this study presents novel peptides with antibacterial activity against the pathogenic forms of Staphylococcus aureus and suggests the possibility that these peptides, upon further characterization, may be developed as clinically useful antibiotics.

A Study on the Radar Operational and Technical Performance Requirements for Vessel Traffic Service

Joong Sung JEON 한국항해항만학회 2020 한국항해항만학회지 Vol.44 No.2

With the expansion of the shipping and port logistics industry in the 21st century, the traffic density is continuously increased because of the increase in volumes of world sea freight and fleets, as well as the increase in the causes of potential marine accidents, such as ship collisions and stranding. Accordingly, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has requested that the installation and operation of VTS should be applied in areas with high risk of marine traffic, and the request should be included as one of the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulations. In this paper, the fundamental requirements of the radar system for vessel traffic services were analyzed and the analyzing factors were based on the IALA guideline.s This paper also includes results for the requirement and recommendation analysis on detection distance, target separation, and the target position accuracy of X-band radar. Also, to check if it satisfies the requirement of detection distance, range and azimuth separation of small point targets, and target position accuracy from the IALA guidelines, the test was conducted through the radar image acquired at the VTS center, and hence, the validity of the technical performance requirements was confirmed.

A Study on Implementation of Safety Navigation Mobile Application Converging Marine Environment Information and Location-Based Service

Jeon, Joong-Sung Korean Institute of Navigation and Port Research 2019 한국항해항만학회지 Vol.43 No.5

In this paper, we implemented a safety navigation mobile application that converged AtoN information and location-based services. When application user uses the smartphone's GPS sensor to transmit the user's vessel location data to the data server, the user receives information of which its providing range is considered, such as stored AtoN data, neighboring vessels information, danger area, and weather information in the server. Providing information is sorted based on the smartphone's direction and inclination and it will be also delivered via wireless network (5G, LTE, 3G, WiFi). Additionally the application is available to implement other functions such as information provision through voice and text alarming service when the user's vessel is either approaching or entering the danger area, and an expanded information provision service that is available in shadow area linking with data-storing methods; other linkable data such as weather and other neighboring vessels will be applied based on the lasted-saved data perceived from the non-shadow area.
