Cynara scolymus L. (artichoke) has been traditionally used in the treatment of digestive-related disease, severe hyperlipidemia and liver disease. Recently, anti-inflammatory effect of artichoke has been reported by several studies, but its mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, the anti-inflammatory mechanism of artichoke was studied using an in vitro acute inflammation model. The effect of artichoke on the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin- 1beta (IL-1β), IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in murine macrophage cell line, RAW264.7, was examined by using ELISA and RT-PCR. As a result, artichoke inhibited the expression of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in macrophages activated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) at a dose dependent manner. The expression of inflammatory mediators such as NO and PGE2 was next investigated in RAW264.7 cells stimulated with LPS. Artichoke also inhibited the production of NO and PGE2 in the cells at a dose dependent manner. Artichoke suppressed the mRNA expression of iNOS and COX-2 in macrophages by LPS. The effect of artichoke on the activation of NF-κB was examined and LPS-induced NF-κB activation was decreased by treatment of artichoke, suggesting that artichoke has anti-inflammatory effect by inhibiting NF- κB activation.

Genetic continuity of Digenea simplex outside the Atlantic waters remains less studied, despite its long exposure to oriental folk medicine and wide distribution in tropical waters. Mitochondrial COI-5P and plastid rbcL sequences and morphology were investigated for plants from Mexico and additional specimens from Japan. Two new species, Digenea mexicana and Digenea rafaelii, are described for plants that would previously have been recognized as D. simplex in Mexico. D. mexicana grows to 10.5 cm tall and has cylindrical axes, irregular or di-, trichotomous branches, simple to branched determinate branchlets with eight pericentral cells, and tetrasporangia on inflated upper parts of determinate branchlets. It occurs intertidally in Quintana Roo, Yucatan Peninsula. D. rafaelii grows to 5 cm tall and has cylindrical axes, irregular or di-, trichotomous branches, and simple determinate branchlets with ten pericentral cells. It occurs intertidally in the Gulf of California. Both COI-5P and rbcL sequences revealed the genetic discontinuity between D. mexicana and D. rafaelii.

<P>Pterocladia lucida (Gelidiales), an important agar source in New Zealand, commonly occurs subtidally in Australia and New Zealand and is very variable in morphology. In the present study, the genetic diversity of P. lucida was investigated for 33 specimens collected in Australia and New Zealand. Phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial cox1 and plastid rbcL sequences revealed that P. lucida specimens formed a monophyletic clade but consisted of four distinct genealogical lineages: one from Australia and three from New Zealand. The pairwise divergences between these four lineages are equal to or higher than those between other species of the family. The Australian lineage is recognized as Pterocladia lucida sensu stricto because the type of the species is from southern Australia. Our results suggest that an ancestor of the P. lucida complex from New Zealand was segregated from the Australian species and then has likely diverged into three species.</P>

Two genera of the family Cleridae, Tillus Olivier, 1790 and Elasmocylidrus Corporaal, 1939 and two species, Tillus elongatus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Elasmocylidrus takedaorum Murakami and Gerstmeier, 2020 are reported for the first time in Korea. Illustrations of a habitus, diagnostic characteristics of the genus and species are presented with key to the korean genera of subfamily Tillinae.
