A Study on Metalwork design based on the Theory of Yin-Yang and Five Elements

This study is the report of my work’s background of creation, philosophy, logic, and so on. My pieces come from single sheets of metal. I am constantly amazed when a flat sheet of metal can miraculously be transformed into a three-dimensional form by a small touch of movement. I realize that a sheet of metal looking very two-dimensional, flat, rigid, strong, and angular has an opposite aspect at the same time; it can be made to look three-dimensional, flexible, soft, and natural. My work transforms a two-dimensional sheet of metal into a three-dimensional form. Through the process of cutting, bending, and hammering a single sheet of metal without addition or reduction, I construct new forms and spaces. This transformation is inspired by oriental philosophy, yin-yang and the five elements; wood, fire, earth, metal, water. I think that a single sheet of metal is yin-yang and the process of transforming is affected by the character of the five elements. In oriental philosophy, these five elements explain changing aspects of the universe, seasons, people and so on. My hollow silver forms embody my understanding of five elements. Every form shifts through undergoing the processes of rising, expanding, collecting, and floating energy. My work represents my philosophy of life. I transform the shapes from cold and inert sheets of metal to vigorous and spiritual forms. The addition of colour brings more vitality to the silver.

Purpose: The recognition of bronchiectasis is growing with increasing prevalence. Recent retrospective study showed the benefit of lung function improvement with use of bronchodilator in bronchiectasis patients with obstructive spirometric pattern. However, there was no available study to evaluate the effect of bronchodilator therapy to the bronchiectasis patients with pure restrictive spirometric pattern (RSP). Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effect of bronchodilator therapy in patients with bronchiectasis and RSP. Method: A retrospective review of bronchiectasis patients diagnosed by chest computed tomography (CT) scan from January 2015 to December 2018 was performed and 356 patients showed pure RSP. Among them, 124 patients received inhaled bronchodilator therapy and performed lung function tests within 1 year before the therapy and after 3-12 months of the therapy. We compared pre and post-treatment lung function of these 124 patients. Result: The median age of the patients was 63 years and 54% of patients (67/124) were male. The median duration of inhaler therapy was 6.1 months. In PFT, the median baseline forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and ratio of FEV1/FVC were 1.68L/62.5% predicted, 2.14L/62.0% predicted, and 77.0%, respectively. After bronchodilator therapy, the median FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC were 1.72L/62.0% predicted, 2.15L/61.0% predicted and 76.0%, respectively, without significant change of lung function after inhaler therapy. Conclusion: The effect of the bronchodilator might be limited in bronchiectasis patients with pure restrictive spirometric pattern.
Penetration of C60 into lung surfactant membranes: Molecular dynamics simulation studies

We performed molecular dynamics simulations of the systems consisting of C60 molecules and dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) monolayer membranes to study the penetration of C60 into lung surfactant (LS) membranes. The potential of mean force of the C60 penetration through the LS membrane was calculated as a function of the distance of a C60 molecule from the DPPC monolayer membrane. The free energy minimum of around 43 kcal/mol is located in the DPPC tail region, indicating that the C60 molecules can accumulate in the LS membrane region. The energy decomposition shows the main driving force of the C60 accumulation in the lipid tail region is the van der Waals interaction with the hydrocarbon tails of DPPC lipids. Finally, we observed that the water evaporation rate can be significantly enhanced by the accumulation of C60 molecules in the membrane tail region.

It is important for the body to maintain a balance of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to remain healthy. The present study aimed to demonstrate the radical scavenging activities of an ethanol extract and five fractions (distilled water, n-hexane, butyl alcohol, chloroform, and ethyl acetate) derived from Phyllostachys edulis (Carrier) J. Houzeau shoots and to compare their antioxidant abilities. The free radical scavenging activity of the ethanol extract and five fractions of P. edulis shoots was investigated using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical assay, hydroxyl (OH) radical assay, and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6- sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical assay. The total phenol content was also evaluated using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The results showed that ethanol extract in DPPH radical, chloroform fraction in OH radical, and distilled water fraction in ABTS radical mainly exhibited free radical scavenging activity among the different extract and fractions. The total phenol content in the distilled water fraction was highest compared to that in the ethanol extract and the other fractions (n-hexane, butyl alcohol, chloroform, and ethyl acetate). The results showed that all the extract and different fractions exhibited radical scavenging activity and total phenol content at different magnitudes of potency. This suggests that P. edulis shoot can be used as a natural source of antioxidants in food and medicine.

<P>A novel phosphor namely CaLa2ZnO5 doped with Eu3+ ions were prepared by conventional solid state reaction method. We have studied and optimized various constraints like sintering temperature, sintering time and dopant concentration. XRD, SEM profiles have been studied to explore its structural properties. Luminescence properties of these phosphors have been characterized by means of their photoluminescence (PL) spectra. We have noticed that the emission intensity of CaLa2ZnO5:Eu3+ phosphors strongly depend on its sintering temperature and Eu3+ concentration. Moreover, their PL spectra reveals that CaLa2ZnO5:Eu3+ phosphors exhibits a strong luminescence of 5D(0)_7F(2) transition at 627 nm under the excitation of 468 nm, which correspond to the popular emission line from a GaN based blue light-emitting diode (LED) chip. The obtained results of the prepared Eu3+ doped phosphors are very much encouraging and they are potentially useful in the development of new solid-state lightning devices.</P>
Age-related digestibility of nutrients depending on the moisture content in aged dogs

Digestibility of pet food can affect the health of dog, especially of aged animals. To maintain the health of dogs in an overall good status it is necessary to provide nutritionally balanced food. For example, the digestibility of dogs was known to be decreased along aging. In addition, losing teethes is an often event in aged dogs that could induce a problem to eat a large size dry pet food. Nonetheless, few detailed information is available on the most suited feeding for aged dogs. As part of the nutritional study of food for aged dogs, in this study, we tested whether food type impacts on digestibility on adult versus senior dogs. The methodology to measure the digestibility of nutrients was chosen the index method using chromium oxide. Dogs were fed the same commercial dry or wet diets, which were supplemented with 0.5% chromium oxide. The wet food was prepared by adding twice volume of water in the dry food prior to incubated overnight (14-16 hours) at room temperature. After five days, their feces were collected up to a total weight of > 200 g which was the amount to analyze undigested nutrients in feces as 3 repeats. In the apparent total tract digestibility analysis of the experimental breed, no difference in the digestibility of crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, ash, and energy was observed regarding the moisture content of the food. Noteworthy, the digestibility of nitrogen free extract was significantly increased in senior dogs fed dry dog food compared with adult dogs fed the same diet, whereas no difference was observed between senior and adult dogs fed wet food. The small breed dogs showed similar results to the experimental breed dogs. However, the digestibility of crude fat was additionally affected by age and food type unlike the experimental breed dogs. This finding suggests that the food moisture content affects the digestibility of nutrients in dogs with aging. Hence, it may be helpful to determine the nutrient contents in foods for senior dogs depending on the food type.
