Background: It is well known that genetic component plays an important role in developing obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. A number of candidate genes have been suggested, but the major gene determining the development of obesity and type 2 diabetes has not yet been uncovered, Previous studies suggest that polymorphisms of the intestinal fatty acid binding protein (FABP2) and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1) gene were related with obesity and/or insulin resistance in several populations. Methods: We examined 76 type 2 diabetic patients (aged 44±6years) and 96 healthy controls (aged 25±3 years). AIa54Thr polymorphism of the FABP2 gene and A to G polymorphism (-3826) of the UCP-1 gene were determined by polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Results: The Thr54 allele of the FABP2 gene was found with a frequency of 0.33 in nondiabetic controls and 0.36 in type 2 diabetic patients. The genotype frequency of the AIa54Thr polymorphism was similar in nondiabetic and diabetic subjects (x²=0.87, P=0.64). The -3826 G allele of UCP-1 gene was found with a frequency of 0.51 in nondiabetic controls, and 0.46 in type 2 diabetic patients. The genotype frequency of the -3826 A to G polymorphism was also similar in nondiabetic and diabetic subjects (x²=1.46, p=0.46). When the subjects of each Groups were subdivided into nonobese and obese group by BMI of 25 kg/㎡, there was no significant difference in genotype frequencies of the UCP-1 and FABP2 gene polymorphisms. Conclusion: These results suggest that either the AIa54Thr polymorphism of the FABP2 gene or the A to G polymorphism (-3826) of UCP-1 gene do not play a major role in developing type 2 diabetes mellitus or obesity in Korean.

Background: Marine invertebrates are well known as pivotal bioresources with bioactive substances such as anti-inflammatory sterols, antitumor terpenes, and antimicrobial peptides. However, there are few scientific reports on chemical compositions and bioactivities of marine invertebrates from the East Sea of South Korea. Methods: In this study, chemical compositions and biological activities were evaluated on both 70% EtOH and hot water extracts of 5 species of marine invertebrates (Crossaster papposus japonicus, Actinostola carlgreni, Stomphia coccinea, Actinostola sp., and Heliometra glacialis) collected from the East Sea of South Korea. The antioxidant activities were measured by ABTS radical scavenging assay. The cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory activity were evaluated using MTT and Griess reagents. Moreover, the antibacterial effect was evaluated using paper disc assay and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assay. Results: In the results of antioxidant activities, 70% EtOH extract of A. carlgreni showed the highest activity ($IC_{50}\;0.19{\pm}0.03mg/ml$) compared to other extracts. Moreover, 70% EtOH extract of A. carlgreni could significantly suppress the nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7. All extracts treated under $400{\mu}g/ml$ have no cytotoxic effects on RAW 264.7 macrophages. In the antibacterial test, both 70% EtOH extracts of C. papposus japonicus and H. glacialis showed a significant antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus. The MIC values were evaluated at 256 and $512{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Conclusions: These results suggested the bioactive potentials of marine invertebrates from the East Sea of South Korea in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.

목적: An important role for dysregulated microRNA (miRNA) expression in the pathogenesis of endometriosis is reported in previous studies. Red ginseng is a Korean representative ginseng product and its related products are widely consumed as health supplements, general food and medicine. However, changes in miRNA expression profiles of endometriosis after Red ginseng treatment has not yet been studied. Thus, we investigated miRNA expression profiles in order to explore the effect of Red ginseng on the endometriosis and identify associated target miRNA. 방법: MTT assay showed cell viability at 0.4mg/ml for RG3 component, 50mg/ml for saponin component, 500mg/ml for non-saponin component and 500mg for ginsenoside component. When the cells were treated with these concentrations for 48 hours, the treatments led to significant changes in expression of various miRNAs including miR-3195 and miR-4739 in cultured endometrial cells from patients with endometriosis. Different miRNAs are affected according to different components of Red ginseng. This paper describes an automated architectural synthesis system for implementing recursive DSP algorithms specified by graphs. The synthesis approach is based on a synchronous multiprocessor scheduler. The input to the system is a recursive DSP flow graph with the required throughput and latency, and the output is a complete circuit diagram with the associated control signals. The synthesis system first computes optimality conditions for a given input algorithm and finds a schedule which satisfies the optimality conditions. Then the synthesis system modifies the generated schedule so as to minimize the number of resources and translates the optimal schedule into a structural specification including the control structures for a circuit realization. This paper illustrates the synthesis process with an example of a fourth order Wave Digital Filter, and compares our synthesis system with other synthesis systems.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Improving the efficiency of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for use in commercial fuel cells has been the subject of diverse synthetic research activities. However, due to their inferior catalytic performance and dispensability, there are still limitations to achieving breakthroughs regarding ORR catalytic activity using carbon nanomaterials, despite their high electron-transfer and mass-transport properties. In this study, we mimicked nature by using a biomineralization approach for controlling the growth of inorganic materials and demonstrated improved ORR values. The designed peptide, Hexcoil-Ala, is able to supramolecular assembly on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), leading to SWNTs that are well dispersed in aqueous solution. In order to direct gold nanoparticle (AuNP) nucleation sites, we substitute two residues in Hexcoil-Ala with cysteine to provide the mutated peptide, HexCoil-Ala-2Cys. This peptide affords a sophisticated, size-controlled, and well-dispersed arrangement of AuNPs. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy studies confirmed the homogeneously well-aligned distribution of nanosized AuNPs on the HexCoil-Ala-2Cys structure, along the direction of SWNT axis. The (AuNPs/P-SWNT) composite in water provides dispersed and stable metallic nanoparticles of electrostatically modified Au through synergistic effects involving the peptide. Consequently, this catalyst exhibits improved ORR performance compared to bulk gold and even, in case of number of electrons (<I>n</I>) transferred, higher than the number of Pt/C. X-ray photoelectron and Raman spectroscopies reveal the details of the electronic interactions among the components of the AuNP/P-SWNT composite, and how they facilitate the four-electron reaction pathway. This study provides valuable information for the optimization of catalyst synthesis and precise particle-size control, leading to stable, water-dispersive composites, with improved electronic properties for enhanced ORR performance in fuel cells.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We used designed peptide to direct nucleation sites of gold nanoparticles. </LI> <LI> The designed peptide offers size-controlled and well-dispersed arrangement of AuNPs. </LI> <LI> Also, the superstructure of AuNPs was modified electrostatistically by the peptide. </LI> <LI> It exhibits improved ORR performance with higher number of electrons(<I>n</I>) transferred. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>In this present work, we describe improved electrocatalytic reaction of directly gold nanoparticle assembled superstructures using the programmed supramolecular protein assembly.</P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
