Our previous study demonstrated that Coprisin, a peptide from Copris tripartitus infected with bacterial pathogens, has an antibacterial activity. We assessed in this study whether Coprisin caused cellular toxicity in various mammalian cell lines. Coprisin selectively caused a marked drop of cell viability in Jurkat T cells, U937 cells and AML-2 cells belonging to the human leukemia cells but not in Caki cells and Hela cells. Fragmentation of DNA, a maker of apoptosis, was also confirmed in theleukemia cell lines but not in other cells. The Coprisin-induced apoptosis in leukemia cells was mediated by AIF (apoptosis inducing factor), a caspase -independent pathway.

<P>We demonstrated the generation of 4.2 PW laser pulses at 0.1 Hz from a chirped-pulse amplification Ti:sapphire laser. The cross-polarized wave generation and the optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification stages were installed for the prevention of the gain narrowing and for the compensation of the spectral narrowing in the amplifiers, obtaining the spectral width of amplified laser pulses of 84 nm (FWHM), and enhancing the temporal contrast. The amplified laser pulses of 112 J after the final booster amplifier were compressed to the pulses with 83 J at 19.4 fs with a shot-to-shot energy stability of 1.5% (RMS). This 4.2 PW laser will be a workhorse for exploring high field science. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America</P>

<P>The effects of mugwort extract (ME), rosemary extract (RE) and ascorbic acid (AC), added singly or in combination, on lipid oxidation and color stability of raw pork patties stored for 15 days were investigated. Lipid oxidation (peroxide value, conjugated diene, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) and color stability (metmyoglobin, total color difference, hue angle and chroma value) of pork patties were all analyzed. Antioxidant combination group effectively prevented lipid and pigment oxidation compared to the single antioxidant group and the control. The best antioxidant combination (P< 0.05) was obtained by the AC+ME+RE (0.05% AC+0.05% ME+0.05% RE), for which the values of lipid and myoglobin oxidation were lower at the end of the storage period (15 days). Therefore, the results demonstrated that antioxidant combination may be a promising method of delaying oxidative deterioration and maintaining the storage quality of pork patties during refrigerated period.</P>

<P>The phylogenomics and comparative functional genomics of avian species were investigated in the Bird 10,000 Genomes (B10K) project because of the important evolutionary position of birds and their value as a research model. However, the systematic profiling of transcriptional changes prior to oviposition has not been investigated in avian species because of the practical difficulties in obtaining pre-oviposited eggs. In this study, a total of 137 pre-oviposited embryos were collected from hen ovaries and oviducts and subjected to RNA-sequencing analyses. Two waves of chicken zygotic genome activation (ZGA) were observed. Functionally distinct developmental programs involving Notch, MAPK, Wnt and TGF beta signaling were separately detected during cleavage and area pellucida formation. Furthermore, the early stages of chicken development were compared with the human and mouse counterparts, highlighting chicken-specific signaling pathways and gradually analogous gene expression via ZGA. These findings provide a genome-wide understanding of avian embryogenesis and comparisons among amniotes.</P>
Effect of a Facial Muscle Exercise Device on Facial Rejuvenation

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>Background</B></P><P>The efficacy of facial muscle exercises (FMEs) for facial rejuvenation is controversial. In the majority of previous studies, nonquantitative assessment tools were used to assess the benefits of FMEs.</P><P><B>Objectives</B></P><P>This study examined the effectiveness of FMEs using a Pao (MTG, Nagoya, Japan) device to quantify facial rejuvenation.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Fifty females were asked to perform FMEs using a Pao device for 30 seconds twice a day for 8 weeks. Facial muscle thickness and cross-sectional area were measured sonographically. Facial surface distance, surface area, and volumes were determined using a laser scanning system before and after FME. Facial muscle thickness, cross-sectional area, midfacial surface distances, jawline surface distance, and lower facial surface area and volume were compared bilaterally before and after FME using a paired Student <I>t</I> test.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The cross-sectional areas of the zygomaticus major and digastric muscles increased significantly (right: <I>P</I> < 0.001, left: <I>P</I> = 0.015), while the midfacial surface distances in the middle (right: <I>P</I> = 0.005, left: <I>P</I> = 0.047) and lower (right: <I>P</I> = 0.028, left: <I>P</I> = 0.019) planes as well as the jawline surface distances (right: <I>P</I> = 0.004, left: <I>P</I> = 0.003) decreased significantly after FME using the Pao device. The lower facial surface areas (right: <I>P</I> = 0.005, left: <I>P</I> = 0.006) and volumes (right: <I>P</I> = 0.001, left: <I>P</I> = 0.002) were also significantly reduced after FME using the Pao device.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>FME using the Pao device can increase facial muscle thickness and cross-sectional area, thus contributing to facial rejuvenation.</P><P><B>Level of Evidence: 4</B></P><P>[GRAPHIC OMISSION]</P>
Taxonomic Revision of the Genus Paromius Fieber from Korea

The true bug genus Paromius from Korea is revised taxonomically. It comprises the following three species: P. exiguus (Distant, 1883), P. jejunus (Distant, 1883) and P. gracilis (Rambur, 1839). Among them, P. jejunus (Distant, 1883) is recorded for the first time in Korea. The pest bug injurious to rice culture, known as P. exiguus (Distant,1883), has been recorded erroneously by the previous authors from Korea due to the misidentification, which is rectified here with the support of morphological evidence. All the species of this genus are classified with proper redescriptions, and an identification key to species is provided with illustrations.
