      • 雨水中의 酸性度 要因分析에 關한 硏究

        To analyze the factor which affects acidity of rainwater in Seoul metropolitan areas, the precipitation data was collected for twelve months, from January 1991 to December 1991. The annual average of pH in Seoul is 5.4, while the levels in the vicinity of Seoul range from pH 5.7 to 6.3. The frequency of samples of which pH exceed 5.6 represents 74% in Seoul, and in surrounding cities are in the range of 10% to 40%. The total soluble ionic contents of rainwater are shown in the following order. SO_(4)^(2-) > Ca^(2+)> NH_(4)^(+) > C1^(-) > Na^(+) > NO_(3)^(-) > Mg^(2+) > K^(+) > H^(+). The portion of SO_(4)^(2-), NO_(3)^(-), and C1^(-) among total anions represents 65%. 14%, and 21%, respectively. From this result, it is shown that SO_(4)^(2-) has the highest contribution to the total acidity. The correlation coefficient between ambient concentration of sulfur dioxide and pH of rainwater shows -0.66, while the coefficient between ambient concentration of nitrogen dioxide and pH is 0.35. It is indicated that pH of rainwater primarily depends on ambient concentration of sulfur dioxide. The correlation coefficient between ambient concentration of sulfur dioxide and the used amount of coal briquet is 0.85, and it is concluded that rain acidity is very affected by the use amount of briquet.

      • Expression of Cholera Toxin B Subunit and Assembly as Functional Oligomers in Silkworm

        The nontoxic B subunit of cholera toxin (CTB) can significantly increase the ability of proteins to induce immunological tolerance after oral administration, when it was conjugated to various proteins. Recombinant CTB offers great potential for treatment of autoimmune disease. Here we firstly investigated the feasibility of silkworm baculovirus expression vector system for the cost-effective production of CTB under the control of a strong polyhedrin promoter. Higher expression was achieved via introducing the partial non-coding and coding sequences (ATAAAT and ATGCCGAAT) of polyhedrin to the 5' end of the native CTB gene, with the maximal accumulation being approximately 54.4 mg/L of hemolymph. The silkworm bioreactor produced this protein vaccine as the glycoslated pentameric form, which retained the GM1-ganglioside binding affinity and the native antigenicity of CTB. Further studies revealed that mixing with silkworm-derived CTB increases the tolerogenic potential of insulin. In the nonconjugated form, an insulin : CTB ratio of 100 : 1 was optimal for the prominent reduction in pancreatic islet inflammation. The data presented here demonstrate that the silkworm bioreactor is an ideal production and delivery system for an oral protein vaccine designed to develop immunological tolerance against autoimmune diabetes and CTB functions as an effective mucosal adjuvant for oral tolerance induction.

        A Study on the Design of Humane Animal Care System and Java Implementation

        Nowadays, the number of pets in the Republic of Korea (ROK) is continuously growing, and people's perception of animals is changing. Accordingly, new systems and services for them are emerging. Despite such changes, there are still many serious problems such as animal cruelty, abandonment, and factory-type breeding places. In this study, we have conducted a research on the design of a humane animal care system and its implementation with Java. The methodology involved in the design will enable managing animals' safety and health by systematically categorizing and studying each health-related issue for protection. Moreover, with this methodology, animals can avert risks through periodic examinations, and the analyzed data will be useful in managing animals efficiently. Thus, this paper proposes a system that monitors whether the owners actually carry out such obligation. Authors expect this convenient, easily accessible system to lead to a more humane approach to the animals they own. The authors plan to establish an animal care network together with local animal associations for the active promotion of the system implemented in this study, in the hope that the network will be extended nationwide.

        Effect of Global Warming on Chloride Ion Erosion Risks for Offshore RC Bridges in China

        Chloride ion penetration, which leads to corrosion of steel reinforcement, is the leading cause of offshore reinforced concrete bridge deterioration. Global warming would accelerate the process of chloride ion penetration and then structural degradation. In China, durability design code for concrete structures has been issued in 2008, and some thresholds of design parameters have been specified to mitigate corrosion in concrete bridge. However, influence of global warming on structure durability was not considered in the issued code. This would overestimate the durability of concrete structures. In this paper, a reliability based method was adopted to evaluate the influence of climate change on the durability of offshore RC bridges considering the acceleration of chloride ion penetration caused by temperature rise. Two climate change scenarios according to IPCC report were considered to define the global warming. A baseline scenario, in which the mean average temperature equals to that of the year 2000, were defined. It is found that the amount of chloride ion on the surface of reinforcing steel bar in the global warming scenarios are 6%-15% higher than that of structure in the baseline scenario. Meanwhile, the probability of corrosion initiation and corrosion damage increased also. In 2100, structures in environmental categories III-C and III-F, designed according to Chinese codes, can no longer adapt the impact of climate change on structure. Comparison of reliability of improved and pre-improved structure was conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed improvement measures.

      • The study of GIS Model Base System

        Theoretically GIS has great advantages in spatial analysis, but for the deficiency in spatial analysis and model function, there are great limits in GIS practical application. So in this case the development of Models and Model Base System has become the key to GIS applications. Model Base System can classify, sustain models and produce, save, query, run, analysis the applications of Models, which should be independent of detailed application fields. At first the article describes the conception, functions, research contents of Model Base System and Model Dictionary in detail and then compares them systematically. The design method and overall frame of Model Base System are subsequently presented. At last, take the water resources and environment decision support system for example, the article describes the detailed application of Model Base System.

        Molecular regulation of potato tuber dormancy and sprouting: a mini-review

        The potato plant is among the most important and well-documented crops globally due to its role in ensuring human food security. Dormancy and sprouting behaviors of the potato tuber are among the most studied phenomena of its developmental stages. Tuber dormancy and sprouting are complex processes influenced by potato genetic background and environment, but the specific genes and molecular mechanisms controlling tuber dormancy and sprouting are still ill-defined. To develop and use engineered plants in the future, we need to better understand the molecular regulation of various physiological processes such as dormancy, sprouting, tuber growth, and flowering. This review highlight that StZEP, StNCED, StCYP and StSUT4 genes are involved in dormancy. Moreover, Ipt gene plays a major role during the release of dormancy. Sprout growth is regulated by ARF1, STIAA, and STGA20x which controls the endogenous content of IAA and GA. However, the mode of action of the main regulatory genes should be determined. This review’s objective was to combine new insights into the most critical genes expressed during potato dormancy and sprouting. The information gathered revealed that organized genetic factors drive both the potato dormancy and sprouting process. The combined assessment of multiple genes is necessary to identify the best candidate genes for genetic engineering.
