As the refueling of a sodium-cooled fast reactor is conducted by rotating part of the reactor head without opening it, the monitoring of existing obstacles that can disturb the rotation of the reactor head is one of the most important issues. This paper deals with the ultrasonic ranging technique that directly monitors the existence of possible obstacles located in a lateral gap between the upper internal structure and the reactor core in a prototype generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactor (PGSFR). A 10 m long plate-type ultrasonic waveguide sensor, whose feasibility has been successfully demonstrated through preliminary tests, was employed for the ultrasonic ranging technique. The design of the sensor's wave radiating section was modified to improve the radiation performance, and the radiated field was investigated through beam profile measurements. A test facility simulating the lower part of the upper internal structure and the upper part of the reactor core with the same shapes and sizes as those in the PGSFR was newly constructed. Several under-water performance tests were then carried out at room temperature to investigate the applicability of the developed ranging technique using the plate-type ultrasonic waveguide sensor with the actual geometry of the PGSFR's internal structures.

The association of thyroid carcinoma and Hashimoto's thyroiditis in same thyroid gland is controversial. Incidence of carcinoma who has Hashimoto's thyroiditis has been reported from 0.5 to 22.5 per cent by Crile and by Hirabayashi et al. The reason that there are such great differences in the reported incidences of carcinoma in Hashimotos disease is the result of the way the material is reported. The carcinomas of the thyroid which occur in association with Hashirnoto's thyroiditis are predominently papillary tumors of lower grade malignancy. Thyroid carcinoma need not be feared in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, if one examines the gland carefully. When patients with Hashimoto's disease are treated with thyroxine, there is little or no tendency for Hashimoto's disease progress to clinically detectable carcinoma of the thyroid, and the microcarcinoma does not appear. In this case, single thyroid nodule was detected in Hashiimoto's disease patient who was treated with thyroxine. There was no significant volume change of thyroid nodule despite of TSH suppression therapy during six months. Therefore we performed FNABC twice, the results were highly suspicious thyroid malignancy and subtotoal thyroidectomy was performed. The final pathologic result was microscopic papillary carcinoma with background Hashlmoto's thyroiditis. In conclusion, we experienced a case of subsequent microscopic papillary carcinoma of the thyroid in patient with Hashimoto's thyroiditis who was TSH suppression therapy with thyroxine(J Kor Soc Endocrinol 11:214 ~220, 1996).

Thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT) is a cytoplasmic enzyme involved in the metabolism of thiopurine drugs and its activity is largely influenced by polymorphisms of the TPMT gene. To date, more than 35 TPMT variants are known to be associated with reduced enzyme activity, but most studies on the TPMT genotype have included only common nonfunctional variants, such as TPMT*2 and TPMT*3. In this study, we carried out a complete sequencing analysis to screen all TPMT variants in Korean patients. A total of 900 Korean patients were genotyped for TPMT and 30 patients (3.3%) had the known TPMT variant alleles. TPMT*3C was found in 25 patients (2.8%): 24 patients with TPMT*1/*3 and one with TPMT*3/*3. Rare TPMT variants including TPMT*6, TPMT*16, and TPMT*32 were detected in five patients (0.6%) and a novel variant, TPMT*38 (c.514T>C, p.S172P), was identified in two patients. This is the first complete sequence-based screening study evaluating all TPMT variants in Asian populations.

Store-operated calcium entry (SOCE), an important mechanism of Ca2+ signaling in a wide range of cell types, is mediated by stromal interaction molecule (STIM), which senses the depletion of endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ stores and binds and activates Orai channels in the plasma membrane. This inside-out mechanism of Ca2+ signaling raises an interesting question about the evolution of SOCE: How did these two proteins existing in different cellular compartments evolve to interact with each other? We investigated the gating mechanism of Caenorhabditis elegans Orai channels. Our analysis revealed a mechanism of Orai gating by STIM binding to the intracellular 2-3 loop of Orai in C. elegans that is radically different from Orai gating by STIM binding to the N and C termini of Orai in mammals. In addition, we found that the conserved hydrophobic amino acids in the 2-3 loop of Orai1 are important for the oligomerization and gating of channels and are regulated via an intramolecular interaction mechanism mediated by the N and C termini of Orai1. This study identifies a previously unknown SOCE mechanism in C. elegans and suggests that, while the STIM-Orai interaction is conserved between invertebrates and mammals, the gating mechanism for Orai channels differs considerably.

In a sodium-cooled fast reactor, which is a Generation-IV reactor, refueling is conducted by rotating, but not opening, the reactor head to prevent a reaction between the sodium, water and air. Therefore, an inspection technique that checks for the presence of any obstacles between the reactor core and the upper internal structure, which could disturb the rotation of the reactor head, is essential prior to the refueling of a sodium-cooled fast reactor. To this end, an ultrasound-based inspection technique should be employed because the opacity of the sodium prevents conventional optical inspection techniques from being applied to the monitoring of obstacles. In this study, a ranging inspection technique using a plate-type ultrasonic waveguide sensor was developed to monitor the presence of any obstacles between the reactor core and the upper internal structure in the opaque sodium. Because the waveguide sensor installs an ultrasonic transducer in a relatively cold region and transmits the ultrasonic waves into the hot radioactive liquid sodium through a long waveguide, it offers better reliability and is less susceptible to thermal or radiation damage. A 10 m horizontal beam waveguide sensor capable of radiating an ultrasonic wave horizontally was developed, and beam profile measurements and basic experiments were carried out to investigate the characteristics of the developed sensor. The beam width and propagation distance of the ultrasonic wave radiated from the sensor were assessed based on the experimental results. Finally, a feasibility test using cylindrical targets (corresponding to the shape of possible obstacles) was also conducted to evaluate the applicability of the developed ranging inspection technique to actual applications.
