      • Submarine Cable Measurements of Voltage for Current Monitoring in the-Tsushima and in the Tokara Straits

        We have been measuring the voltage differences by using submarine cables in the Tsushima and in the Tokara Straits. The aim of these measurements is to estimate the volume transports of the ocean currents through those straits. In this paper, the voltage differences are compared with the corresponding sea level and air pressure differences between straits. Especially in the Tsushima Strait, the voltage difference is consistent with the air pressure difference as well as the sea level difference.

        Identifying teaching competencies for medical residents using a modified Delphi method

        Purpose: This study aimed to identify the teaching competencies of medical residents.Methods: A modified Delphi study was conducted from January to March 2017. Twenty-four panelists (six medical educators, program directors, chief residents, and residents each) from various facilities in Japan participated in the study. The consensus criterion for this study was that more than 80% of the panelists gave a rating of 6 or higher on the 7-point Likert scale (“not at all important” to “extremely important”) without any comments. The modified Delphi approach resulted in a list of 27 resident teaching competencies after three rounds. These competencies were categorized based on Harden and Crosby’s 12 roles of medical teachers.Results: Our study revealed that, of the 12 roles, residents were primarily viewed as “clinical or practical teachers,” “teaching role models,” “on-the-job role models,” “learning facilitators,” and “student assessors.”Conclusion: The 27 resident teaching competencies indicate the importance of educational proximity for residents as teachers. It is expected that this finding will contribute to competency-based resident-as-teacher education.

        경산 소월리 목간의 성격에 대한 기초적 검토 - 신라 촌락문서와의 비교 및 형태적 특징을 중심으로 -

        이 글은 경산 소월리에서 출토된 목간의 성격에 대해 기초적인 검토를 시도한 것이다. 검토하는 전제로 목간의 연대를 6세기로 단정하기 어려우니 6~7세기경 신라의 것이라고만 봤다. 그리고 목간은 이차적으로 사용된 것으로 추정되기 때문에 같은 유구에서 출토된 인면장식옹을 비롯한 유물들과는 별도로 검토되어야 하는 것을 지적했다. 이 글은 목간의 내용과 형태에 주로 주목하여 검토하였다. 먼저 목간의 기재 내용을 정리하고 신라촌락문서와 비교해 봤다. 목간에는 ‘지명+토지 종류+토지 면적’이 기록되어 있다. 한 촌 전체의 토지에 대해 기록한 촌락문서와 비교할 수 있는 귀중한 자료인데 토지 종류에 麻田이 없고 또 토지 면적에서 束 단위가 없는 등 정확도가 낮다는 차이가 있다. 그리고 목간에 기록된 토지 면적은 합계해도 촌락문서 한 촌의 15~26%에 불과하다. 촌락문서를 통해서 목간의 토지 범위를 계산해 보면 1.3~2.2㎞ 정도였다고 추정된다. 이러한 면적이나 범위는 새로 개간했다고 추정되는 B촌 薩下知村의 掘加利何木杖谷地와 비슷한 규모이니 목간에 기재된 토지가 새로 개간된 지역이었을 가능성이 있다. 다음에 목간이 장대한 막대기형인 것에는 어떠한 시각기능이 있었다고 추정하여 일본에서 출토된 막대기형 목간을 참조하였다. 일본의 막대기형 목간에도 토지와 관련된 고지를 쓴 것이 있는데 그것은 지팡이가 경계 표지나 토지 점유 표지의 영적·주적인 힘을 가지고 있다고 생각되었기 때문이다. 소월리 목간이 장대한 막대기형인 것도 그러한 영적·주적인 힘과 관련되었다고 생각되며 한국에서 토지 경계에 나무나 돌의 기둥을 세우는 사례로 통일신라, 고려시대에 확인되는 장생·장생표를 들었다.

        관문성 명문석과 신라의 역역 동원 체제

        In the fortress walls of Gwanmun Fortress, there has been found 10 inscription stones. The exact date of the stones is unknown, but there is no doubt that it was in the early days of Unified Silla Period before 722. On the stone are the name of the area responsible for the construction, the “南界 (south boundary)” or “北界 (northern boundary)” indicating the boundary of the wall in charge, and the “受地 (receiving)” distance of the wall in charge. The name of the area is presumed to be Gun (郡), and looking at the wall from south to north, there was a relationship that Gun was in charge of construction in a clockwise direction. “骨估” of the 1st and 2nd stones and “熊” of the 2nd stone are considered Hyeon (현) according to the geography of “삼국사기” but are presumed to have been Gun in the early days of Unified Silla. It is estimated that it was mobilized from all over the country for the construction of the castle, and the size of the mobilization of Gun was determined based on the number of people. As for the unit of “Gumgyong (金京)” in charge of the construction of the fortress, they has been considered to be Ri (里) under the Bu (部), or the aristocracy-governde dominion. However, considering the contents of the inscription and the area in charge of the wall, it is believed that Gumgyong was in charge of about 6-7 districts, and is estimated that six Jung (停), the predecessor of 6gijung (畿停) were in charge. The fact that it is in charge of the same construction as Gun supports the assumption that it is a special military administrative district. In addition, since they are in charge of the same construction distance, the six Jung are artificially set up areas, and it is possible that the troops stationed there were mobilized for the construction. Although the inscription stones of Gwanmun Fortress has not received much attention until now, it is an important historical material for considering the rulling system of the early Unified Silla Period.

      • Occurrence of ELISA Inhibitors, and Inhibitor-free Determination of Cyclobutane Pyrimidine Dimers in Japanese Cypress Leaves

        DNA samples extracted from Japanese cypress leaf tissues contain isopropyl alcohol-precipitable, high molecular weight compounds, which interfere ELISA for cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD). Removal of the compounds is achieved by DEAE ion-exchange column chromatography and improves the ELISA responses of the DNA. When extracting DNA repeatedly from the same leaf tissues, the DNA samples show CPD responses which increase with the order in sequential extraction, and hence for a reliable detennination of DNA lesion a thorough extraction of DNA is required. Clearing these two problems it was demonstrated that CPD level was slightly higher in the leaves of trees growing under full sunlight than in those growing under UBV -cut sunlight.

      • A Study on Improvement of Service Availability of the 21-GHz Band Satellite Broadcasting using the Storage Reception

        The 21-GHz band, which has a 600-MHz 2007. However, since rain attenuation broadcasting from much larger than that in the 12-GHz band, powerful countermeasures to improve service availability are ardently desired. Consequently, we are studying broadcasting systems equipped with storage devices to overcome the effects of such heavy rain attenuation in the 21-GHz band. We compare the performances of two systems, i.e., the time diversity scheme and the so-called "long block length interleave transmission scheme" we show suitable applications for the two systems. Finally, we describe a prototype apparatus that was designed and fabricated to verify effectiveness of the long block-length interleave scheme. In the apparatus, we used HDDs (hard disk drives) as storage devices. Since HDDs are not suitable for random access, such as interleaving we inverted "a double-stage interleave method". The successful demonstration of the apparatus using the method is reported.

        Japanese Space Policy - Where is she going?

        Passing 26 years from 1970 when the first satellite was launched into the orbit, Japan developed and successfully launched H-II from Tanegashima Space Center in 1994. During those period, Japanese space policy has experienced a big shake from independent development to technology import from the US, and back again to independent development. In general, the H-II rocket which was manufactured by 100% domestic technology, brings Japan from the old era (experimental stage) to the new era (practical use stage). Fundamental Policy of Japan's Space Activities, which decides such policy as mentioned, was revised in January, 1996 this year after an interval of 7 years. This revised outline confirms the result of Japanese space technology until present and identifies the future direction and framework of her space activities for a period of coming ten years on the basis of a ong-term perspective towards the 21st century. However, when comparing with the last Fundamental Policy in 1989, there seems no big change in it, and a long-term perspective is also not seen there. The description varies on some important points in international space law, like international cooperation, protection of environment, commercial use, etc. In addition, the immaturity as well as the necessity of broader discussion are felt because neither this Fundamental Policy nor The National Defense Program Outline treated any national and international security matters concerning outer space. Considering the present time when Japan enters into the practical use of outer space, such as application, commercial use and launching service, etc, it is doubtful whether new Fundamental Policy was properly planned or not. It seems necessary to use several measures by which the public opinion, opinions from industry and debate on the security are reflected in the policy making.

      • Gas-liquid interface treatment in underwater explosion problem using moving least squares-smoothed particle hydrodynamics

        In this study, we investigate the discontinuous-derivative treatment at the gas-liquid interface in underwater explosion (UNDEX) problems by using the Moving Least Squares-Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (MLS-SPH) method, which is known as one of the particle methods suitable for problems where large deformation and inhomogeneity occur in the whole domain. Because the numerical oscillation of pressure arises from derivative discontinuity in the UNDEX analysis using the standard SPH method, the MLS shape function with Discontinuous-derivative Basis Function (DBF) that is able to represent the derivative discontinuity of field function is utilized in the MLS-SPH formulation in order to suppress the nonphysical pressure oscillation. The effectiveness of the MLS-SPH with DBF is demonstrated in comparison with the standard SPH and conventional MLS-SPH though a shock tube problem and benchmark standard problems of UNDEX of a trinitrotoluene (TNT) charge.
