The debate between the two perspectives regarding the benefits of growing up with siblings versus growing up alone is ongoing. The current study was conducted to explore how young children`s prosocial skills are influenced by sibling status. Prosocial behaviors of 340 preschool children in South Korea were rated by their teachers and compared between children with siblings versus those who do not. The results showed that growing up with siblings did appear to have a positive influence on younger children, and the birth order and the gender of siblings did not affect prosocial behaviors among those children with siblings. Moreover, a mediation model showed that the difference between the two groups in prosocial behaviors was mediated by age, suggesting that the effect of sibling status on children`s prosocial behaviors diminished as children got older. Further analyses, for possible explanations of other factors playing parts in the relationship between sibling status and prosocial behaviors are discussed.
Processing and Properties of the NiCuTiZr-(Si) Alloy System
Haein Choi-Yim 한국물리학회 2008 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.53 No.4
We report in-situ composite formation in NiCuTiZrSi and NiCuTiZr aloys. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the aloys show a primary Ni(Ti,Zr) B2 structure superimposed on the diffuse scattering maximum from the amorphous phase. The microstructure of the composites was investigated with scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. We compare the compression test results of the NiCuTiZrSi and the NiCuTiZr aloys.

Hemoglobin (Hb) is a member of heme-protein that can perform catalytic non-specific chain reaction in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Catalytic ability of Hb to degrade pyrene was demonstrated using soil contaminated with 14C pyrene and 10 mg pyrene /kg soil. The composition of soil was similar to previously used soil except that it had lower organic carbon content. Bench scale laboratory tests were conducted in the presence of buffer only, H2O2 only, or Hb with H2O2 for 24 h. After 24 h reaction, 0.1 and 1.3% of 14C pyrene in contaminated soil were mineralized with H2O2 only or Hb plus H2O2. No mineralization to 14CO2 was detected with buffer only. Approximately 12.2% of pyrene was degraded in the presence of H2O2 only while 44.0% of pyrene was degraded in the presence of Hb plus H2O2 during 24 h of catalytic reaction. When degradation intermediate products were examined, two chemicals were observed in the presence of H2O2 only while 25 chemicals were found in the presence of Hb plus H2O2. While most degradation products were simple hydrocarbons, four of the 27 chemicals had aromatic rings. However, none of these four chemicals was structurally related to pyrene. These results suggest that Hb catalytic system could be used to treat pyrene-contaminated soil as an efficient and speedy remediation technology. In addition, intermediate products generated by this system are not greatly affected by composition change in soil organic matter content.
Molecular Taxonomy of a Phantom Midge Species (Chaoborus flavicans) in Korea
Haein An,Gila Jung,Chang-Bae Kim 한국동물분류학회 2012 Animal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity Vol.28 No.1
The larvae of Chaoborus are widely distributed in lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. These omnivorous Chaoborus larvae are crucial predators and play a role in structuring zooplankton communities, especially for small-sized prey. Larvae of Chaoborus are commonly known to produce predator-induced polyphenism in Daphnia sp. Nevertheless, their taxonomy and molecular phylogeny are very poorly understood. As a fundamental study for understanding the role of Chaoborus in predator-prey interactions in a freshwater ecosystem, the molecular identification and phylogenetic relationship of Chaoborus were analyzed in this study. A molecular comparison based on partial mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase Ⅰ(COⅠ) between species in Chaoborus was carried out for the identification of Chaoborus larvae collected from 2 localities in Korea. According to the results, the Chaoborus species examined here was identified as C. flavicans, which is a lake-dwelling species. Furthermore, partial mitochondrial genome including COⅠ, COⅡ, ATP6, ATP8, COⅢ, and ND3 were also newly sequenced from the species and concatenated 5 gene sequences excluding ATP8 with another 9 dipteran species were compared to examine phylogenetic relationships of C. flavicans. The results suggested that Chaoborus was more related to the Ceratopogonidae than to the Culicidae. Further analysis based on complete mitochondrial DNA sequences and nuclear gene sequences will provide a more robust validation of the phylogenetic relationships of Chaoborus within dipteran lineages.
