Objectives : Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a neurotrophic factor which regulates the intracellular signaling molecules. These molecules are also affected by mood stabilizers such as lithium and valproate. In addition, epidermal growth factor enhances neuronal survival, maturation and differentiation especially in midbrain dopaminergic neurons of which dysfimction may play a role in pathophysiology of bipolar disorders. Bipolar disorder has some genetic commonalities with schizophrenia, and several association studies of EGF have been done with schizophrenia. In this study, we tried to investigate the geneticassociation between EGF A61G polymorphism and bipolar disorder. Methods : Total of 189 patients and 347 nonnal control were included. All patients satisfied the diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV for bipolar disorder type I (BPDI, N= 146) and bipolar disorder type II (BPDII, N=43). Genomic DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood, and genotyping was performed by TaqMan™ method. Genotype and allele frequency of EGF A61G polymorphism between the patients and the control were compared by contingency chi-square test or the Fisher's exact test. Results : No association was found between EGF A61G polymorphism and susceptibility of BPDI, BPDII and bipolar disorder (all patients). Female patients with BPDII showed overexpression of AG genotype compared to that ofcontrol group (p=0.03). However, this association was not significant after correction of multiple testing. Conclusion : In conclusion, EGF A61G polymorphism has no association with susceptibility of bipolar disorder. However, the disease modifying role of EGF gene polymorphism for bipolar disorder remains to be elucidated in respect to factors such as gender difference or diagnostic subtype.

Background: Peptic ulcer is a heterogenous disease which has genetic or acquired factors in the development of the disease. Serum pepsinogen I (PG I) was reported as a marker of the genetic factors. Rut it is less reported about the relations between serum PG I and acquired factors in the development of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum PG I levels as the genetic or acquired factors in the development of duodenal ulcer. Methods: Fasting serum PG I levels were tested in 85 patients with duodenal ulcer, 64 their family members, and 52 normal controls. Results: 1) Serum PG I levels in duodenal ulcer patients (104±44ng/ml) and their family members (74±29ng/ml) were significantly higher than that of the control subjects (57±24ng/ml)(p<0.05). 2) The PG I levels of the family in their family members (78±30ng/ml) who had duodenal ulcer patient with elevated PGI levels in their family were somewhat higher than that of the family members (67±19ng/ml) who had the duodenal ulcer patients with normal PG I levels, but the difference did not acquire statistical significance (p<0.05). 3) The mean serum PG I level of smoker (111±47ng/ml) was higher than that of non-smoker (84±35ng/ml). 4) The mean serum PG I levels did not change in duodenal ulcer patients even after the treatment with H2-receptor blocker. Conclusion: These results suggested that serum PG I levels may be useful as a genetic marker in duodenal ulcer disease, but might be affected by acquired risk factor like smoking as well.

N/A Diverticular disease of the colon is extremely common in developed Western nations, in which the most common site of diverticula is the sigmoid. Its prevalence increases with age and complications occur not rarely. In Asia and Africa, however, lower overall prevalence, higher frequency in right-side colon than left-side and rarer complications are observed. Therefore, we analyzed the prevalence, location and the number of divericula with double-contrast colon studies, and clinical manifestations and complications in 12,599 patients in Seoul National University Hospital from January 1988 to December 1991. Overall prevalence of diverticular disease of the colon was 4.1%, mean age 53.8 year and the ratio of male to female was 2:1. Diverticula occurred 6 times more frequently in the right-side colon than left-side. The prevalence of diverticula in left-side colon increased with age. Mean number of diverticula was 4.9 and the cases with rnore than 11 diverticula belonged to aged group exclusively. The rnost common symptoms were abdominal discomfort and pain. Complications were diverticulitis (1.8%) and lower gastrointestinal hleeding (1%). These data suggest that the prevalence of diverticular disease of the colon is low in Korea compared with the prevalence in Western nations, but it is increasing these days. Right-side colon is the predominant site of colonic diverticula in Korea, but increase in frequency in left-side colon with age was observed. Complications were rare and could be managed with medical treatment.
Promoter demethylation mediates the expression of ZNF645, a novel cancer/testis gene

Cancer/testis (CT) antigens exhibit highly tissue-restricted expression and are considered promising targets for cancer vaccines. Here we identified a novel CT gene ZNF645 which restrictively expresses in normal human testes and lung cancer patients (68.3%). To investigate the promoter methylation status of ZNF645, we carried out bisulfite genomic sequencing and found that the CpG island in its promoter was heavily methylated in normal lung tissues without the expression of ZNF645, whereas there was high demethylation in normal human testes and lung carcinoma tissues with its expression. Also ZNF645 could be remarkably activated in A549 and HEK293T cells treated by DNA demethylation agent 5`-aza-2`-deoxycytidine. And the dual luciferase assay revealed that the promoter activity of the ZNF645 was inhibited by methylation of the CpG island region. Therefore, we proposed that ZNF645 is a CT gene and activated in human testis and lung cancers by demethylation of its promoter region. [BMB reports 2010; 43(6): 400-406]
Simple High Efficiency Full-Bridge DC-DC Converter using a Series Resonant Capacitor

This paper presents a simple high efficiency full-bridge DC-DC converter using a series resonant capacitor. The proposed converter achieves the zero voltage switching of the primary switches under a wide range of load conditions and reduces the high circulating current in the freewheeling mode using the leakage resonant inductance and the series resonant capacitor. Thus, the proposed converter overcomes the drawbacks of the conventional full-bridge DC-DC converter and improves its overall system efficiency. Its structure is simplified by using the leakage inductance of the transformer as the resonant inductance and omitting the DC output filter inductance. Also it can operate over a wide range of input voltages. In this paper, the operational principle, analysis and design example are described in detail. Finally, the experimental results from a 650W (24V/27A) prototype are demonstrated to confirm the operation, validity and features of the proposed converter.
작물인식 인공지능모델 학습을 위한 효과적인 토마토 분할 Annotation 방식 비교

농업인구 감소 추세와 고령화로 인한 노동력 부족을 해결하기 위해 농업에 인공지능을 활용한 자동화 연구가 주목되고 있다. 특히, 인공지능을 활용한 작물 인식연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 한편, 농작물 데이터는 환경의 영향을 많이 받기 때문에 Annotation 방식에 따라 모델의 정확도에 큰 영향을 끼친다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 효과적인 토마토 영상의 Annotation 방식을 규명하기 위해 두 가지 Annotation 방식으로 라벨링된 데이터 셋을 각각 학습하고 정확도를 비교하였다. 토마토 영상은 국립농업과학원(Wanju, Korea)의 첨단온실에서 취득하였다. 영상 데이터는 RGB-D 카메라(D435, Intel, CA, USA)를 활용하여 취득하였으며, 총 269장의 영상에 1,990개의 과실 정보가 포함된다. Annotation 방식은 다음과 같다. 첫 번째 방식은 영상에 노출 되어있는 토마토만을 Annotation하는 방식으로, 폐색으로 인해 육안으로 볼 수 없는 부분을 제외한 가시적으로 확인할 수 있는 토마토의 부분만 Annotation하는 방식이다. 두 번째 방식은 영상에 노출 되어있는 토마토에 폐색이 있는 경우, 작업자의 주관적인 판단에 따라 폐색 뒤의 토마토 과형을 예측하여 Annotation하는 방식이다. 앞의 두 가지 방식으로 만들어진 데이터 셋은 YOLACT 알고리즘을 통해 각각 학습되었으며, Epoch과 Batch size 및 학습율은 각각 300, 16, 0.001로 설정되었다. 그 결과, 두 가지 학습방식에서 Total Loss의 최종 수렴 값은 각각 1.0616 및 1.0728로 확인되었다. 이처럼 두 방식 모두 Total Loss 값이 높은 이유는 데이터 수가 부족하기 때문으로 사료된다. 따라서 향후에는 더 많은 데이터를 확보하여 인식 모델의 정확도를 향상시키기 위한 연구를 진행할 계획이다.
