New Process for Ti Alloy Powder Production by Using Gas Atomization

The spherical and high quality Titanium fine powder "Tilop" has been produced with gas atomization furnace, Sumitomo Titanium Corporation originally designed. Recently, a new process which can produce Ti-alloy(Ti-6Al-4V) powders by utilizing our gas atomization process, of which raw material is sponge titanium pre-mixed with alloy chips or granules has been also developed. The particle size of gas atomized Ti-alloy powder and the mechanical properties of sintered Ti-alloy compacts prepared by metal injection molding were discussed in this study.
Collaboration Technique of RT-Middleware with the Existing Simulator

The developments of the robots usually depend on their own original specifications. Therefore, the reuse of the robot technologies and/or components is difficult and their development processes required much time and high cost. The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology developed RT-Middleware to solve the above problems by modularizing and defining a framework of RT-Component. The development efficiency is improved by using RT-Middleware. However, there is still a problem that there are only few simulators which correspond to RT-Middleware. For the reason, in this paper we focus to simulate the robot, which adopts the RT-Middleware by using an existing simulator. As the result, the system developers can simulate their own system easily.

Background: To identify a new strategy for postoperative pain management, we investigated the analgesic effects of allopregnanolone (Allo) in an incisional pain model, and also assessed its effects on the activities of the primary afferent fibers at the dorsal horn. Methods: In experiment 1, 45 rats were assigned to Control, Allo small-dose (0.16 mg/kg), and Allo large-dose (1.6 mg/kg) groups (n = 15 in each). The weight bearing and mechanical withdrawal thresholds of the hind limb were measured before and at 2, 24, 48, and 168 h after Brennan’s surgery. In experiment 2, 16 rats were assigned to Control and Allo (0.16 mg/kg) groups (n = 8 in each). The degree of spontaneous pain was measured using the grimace scale after the surgery. Activities of the primary afferent fibers in the spinal cord (L6) were evaluated using immunohistochemical staining. Results: In experiment 1, the withdrawal threshold of the Allo small-dose group was significantly higher than that of the Control group at 2 h after surgery. Intergroup differences in weight bearing were not significant. In experiment 2, intergroup differences in the grimace scale scores were not significant. Substance P release in the Allo (0.16 mg/kg) group was significantly lower than that in the Control group. Conclusions: Systemic administration of Allo inhibited mechanical allodynia and activities of the primary afferent fibers at the dorsal horn in a rat postoperative pain model. Allo was proposed as a candidate for postoperative pain management. (Korean J Pain 2018; 31: 10-5)
Firmicutes in Gut Microbiota Correlate with Blood Testosterone Levels in Elderly Men

Purpose: In males, testosterone levels have been implicated in various diseases. Recently, the influence of gut microbialderived compounds on host metabolism has become evident, and it has been suggested that some gut bacteria may be involved in testosterone metabolism. In the present study, we examined the relationship between testosterone levels and gut microbiota in elderly Japanese men. Materials and Methods: We collected samples from Japanese male subjects suspected of having prostate cancer and underwent prostate biopsies and excluded patients with positive biopsies to avoid the effect of prostate cancer on the gut microbiota. In total, 54 Japanese males with negative biopsy results were included in our study. The gut microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing of bacterial DNA extracted from rectal swabs. Gut microbiota compositions were compared between the two groups according to the level of serum testosterone (above or below 3.5 ng /mL). Results: The median age of the cohort was 71 years, and the quartile range was 67 to 73 years. We observed no significant difference in alpha or beta diversity, but some bacteria belonging to the phylum Firmicutes (Clostridiales, Turicibacter, and Gemella) were increased in the high testosterone group. Serum testosterone levels positively correlated with the relative amount of Firmicutes (rS=0.3323, p=0.0141), and the amount of Firmicutes affected serum testosterone levels independent of host factors (age, body mass index, triglyceride, and total cholesterol; β=0.770, p=0.0396). Conclusions: Some intestinal bacteria belonging to the phylum Firmicutes were associated with testosterone levels in elderly males. Therefore, the gut microbiota could affect testosterone metabolism in elderly males.

In clinical practice, medical professionals are likely to rely on various scoring systems and their suggested cutoffs to evaluate the severity of disease or the risk to patients and the key of scoring system and database is the reliable cutoff. We herein report a novel and concise method to calculate the significant cutoff by exploiting serial testing with the result of tricuspid valve surgery. In tricuspid surgery, tricuspid annuloplication with annuloplasty ring has been common procedure to fix tricuspid regurgitation, but the optimal ring size has not been determined. We defined the new index TARI (Tricuspid Annuloplasty Ring size Index), which normalizes the ring size by body surface area. We tested all cutoff candidates of TARI sequentially and confirmed which value was the most significant cutoff to achieve the best result. Our method would be simple and be widely applicable for any dataset that has negative or positive correlations.
Low-frequency VLSI architecture with a binary data buffer for H.264 CABAC

In the H.264 encoding process, CABAC is a significant issue in real-time implementation, because of the difficulty involved in its parallel processing. Moreover, the number of symbols of each macroblock varies greatly. Therefore, a high clock frequency is needed to satisfy the required peak performance. In the preset paper, we proposed efficient VLSI architecture of H.264 CABAC. In the proposed architecture, by storing binary data into frame memory, the required peak performance can be reduced to 1/20, and real-time execution of HD video sequences at low clock frequencies, such as 100 ㎒, can be achieved.

<P>A variety of host compounds have been used as molecular-scale reaction vessels, protecting guests from their environment or restricting the space available around them, thus favouring particular reactions. Such molecular 'flasks' can endow guest molecules with reactivities that differ from those in bulk solvents. Here, we extend this concept to crystalline molecular flasks, solid-state crystalline networks with pores within which pseudo-solution-state reactions can take place. As the guest molecules can spontaneously align along the walls and channels of the hosts, structural changes in the substrates can be directly observed by in situ X-ray crystallography during reaction. Recently, this has enabled observation of the molecular structures of transient intermediates and other labile species, in the form of sequential structural snapshots of the chemical transformation. Here, we describe the principles, development and applications of crystalline molecular flasks.</P>
Cutting characteristics of twist drill having cutting edges for drilling and reaming

In this study, the cutting characteristics of a drill reamer, which has conventional twist drill cutting edges appended for reaming, wereinvestigated. A drill reamer has three types of cutting edges, whose roles are drilling, semi-finishing, and finishing. The cutting characteristicsof a conventional twist drill were compared to those of the drill reamer. The cutting characteristics were evaluated using the thrustforce, cutting torque, surface roughness, wear behavior of the cutting edges, and cutting edge temperature. The study used a workpiecemade of carbon steel. The temperature of the cutting edge for reaming reached a maximum value of approximately 420°C, even thoughthe depth of the cut was very small. The inner surface roughness with the drill reamer was superior to that with the conventional drill,even under dry and low-speed cutting conditions. The abrasive wear observed on the margin face of the cutting edge used for reaming.
