Clamped-double submodule has dc short current protecting function, which can improve safety and stability of HVDC system. However, it needs additional IGBT, diode, and capacitor compared to the conventional half-bridge and full-bridge submodules. Generally, the failure-rate increases in proportion to the number of circuit components. Complex operation of the submodule may increase the failure-rate, so accurate reliability analysis is required to apply CDSM in practical HVDC system. Fault-tree-based reliability analysis is performed to take into account the operational characteristics of CDSM. FTA is possible to analyze the failure-rate more accurately than the prior PCA that considers only the type of parts, the number of parts, and the connection status. By comparing the failure-rate of a CDSM with typical HBSM and FBSM, and analyzing the failure-rate according to the voltage margin of the parts, it provides guidelines for submodule selection under various conditions
A Highly Efficient AC-PDP Driver Featuring an Energy Recovery Function in Sustaining Mode Operation

A simple sustain driver employing an energy recovery function is proposed as a highly efficient driver of a plasma display panel. The proposed driver uses dual resonance in the sustaining mode operation: a main resonance between an inductor and an external capacitor to produce alternative pulses and a sub-resonance between an inductor and a panel to recover the energy consumption by the capacitive displacement current of the PDP. The operational principle and design procedure of the proposed circuit are presented with theoretical analysis. The operation of the proposed sustain driver is verified through simulation and experiments based on a 7.5-inch-diagonal panel with a 200 KHz operating frequency.
A Cascaded Multilevel Inverter Using Bidirectional H-bridge Modules

This paper presents a multilevel inverter configuration which is designed by insertion of a bidirectional switch between capacitive voltage sources and a conventional H-bridge module. The modified inverter can produce a better sinusoidal waveform by increasing the number of output voltage levels. By serial connection of two modified H-bridge modules, it is possible to produce 9 output voltage levels including zero. There are 24 basic switching patterns with the 9 output voltage levels. Among the patterns, we select the 2 most efficient switching patterns to get a lower switching loss and minimum dv/dt stress. We then analyze characteristics of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the output voltage with variation of input voltage by computer-aided simulations and experiments.
Sensorless Control of PMSM using the Principle of Superposition

This paper presents a new sensorless control scheme for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) based on the principle of superposition. The state equation of a PMSM is separated into two conditional equations. One is the state equation to exciting voltage and phase current under constraint, and the other is the state equation to back-emf and phase current under a short circuit state. Based on this conditional separation, it simply connotes short current due to the presence of back-emf of the motor in operation, and therein it obtains the rotor position information. To verify the validity of theoretical analysis of the proposed sensorless control scheme, we implemented experiments using a prototype PMSM for the use of a washing machine.
Gas Turbine Data Acquisition and Monitoring System for Combined Cycle Power Plant

This paper presents a data acquisition and monitoring system for a gas turbine. The proposed system entitled C-Tune DAS plays an important role to make an analysis of the real-time operation of the gas turbine under maintenance. The designed LabVIEW based software is divided into three parts according to their original functions, i.e., data acquisition, data analysis with display, and data storage. The data acquisition part receives data from a PMS (Plant Management System) server and two cFPs (Compact-Field Point). To verify the validity of the developed system, it is applied to gas turbines in the combined cycle power plant in Korea.
Single-phase Uninterruptible Power Supply employing Superconducting Magnet Energy Storage Unit

A single-phase uninterruptible power supply system equipped with a superconducting magnet energy storage unit is proposed to achieve a simple circuit configuration and higher system reliability. It reduces a number of switching devices by applying a common-arm scheme. Removing some switches or substituting passive elements for active switches can increase the sophistication and reduces degree of freedom in control strategy. However, high-performance DSP controller can execute the complicated control task with no additional cost. Operational principles to normal, stored-energy, and bypass mode are discussed in detail. The validity of the proposed system is verified by experimental results.
