        One-year Oxford knee scores should be used in preference to 6-month scores when assessing the outcome of total knee arthroplasty

        Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to assess whether there was a clinically significant difference in the mean Oxford knee score (OKS) between 6 and 12 months after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The secondary aim was to identify variables associated with a clinically significant change in the OKS between 6 and 12 months. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was undertaken using an established arthroplasty database of 1574 primary TKA procedures. Patient demographics, body mass index (BMI), comorbidities, OKS and EuroQoL 5- domain (EQ-5D) score were collected preoperatively and at 6 and 12 months postoperatively. A clinically significant change in the OKS was defined as 5 points or more. Results: There was a 1.1-point increase in the OKS between 6 and 12 months postoperatively, which was statistically significant (95% confidence (CI) 0.8–1.3, p < 0.0001). There were 381 (24.2%) patients who had a clinically significant improvement in their OKS from 6 to 12 months. After adjusting for confounding, patients with a lower BMI (p = 0.028), without diabetes mellitus (p < 0.001), a better preoperative OKS (p < 0.001) or a worse 6-month OKS (p < 0.001) were more likely to have a clinically significant improvement. A 6-month OKS < 36 points was a reliable predictor of a clinically significant improvement in the 6-month to 12-month OKS (area under the curve 0.73, 95% CI 0.70–0.75, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Overall, there was no clinically significant change in the OKS from 6 to 12 months; however, a clinically significant improvement was observed in approximately a quarter of patients and was more likely in those scoring less than 36 points at 6 months.         Antiplasmodial and Antidiabetic Activities of Ethanolic Leaf Extract of Heinsia crinata

        The ethanolic leaf extract of Heinsia crinata, grown particularly for the leaf in Niger Delta region of Nigeria, was evaluated for antiplasmodial activity in Plasmodium berghei-infected mice as well as for hypoglycemic and antidiabetic activities in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. H. crinata (450–1,350 mg/kg/day) exhibited significant (P < .05) blood schizonticidal activity in both the 4-day early infection test and established infection with a considerable mean survival time, though not comparable to that of the standard drug, chloroquine (5 mg/kg/day). Treatment of alloxan-induced diabetic rats with the leaf extract caused a significant (P < .01) reduction in fasting blood glucose levels of normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rats both in an acute study and with prolonged treatment (2 weeks). The activity of the extract was comparable to that of the reference drug, glibenclamide, during the acute study but was not comparable to that of the standard drug during prolonged treatment. The results suggest that the leaf extract of H. crinata possesses significant (P < .05) antiplasmodial as well as hypoglycemic and antidiabetic effects that can be employed in health care.

        AzTEC half square degree survey of the SHADES fields – I. Maps, catalogues and source counts

        <P>ABSTRACT</P><P>We present the first results from the largest deep extragalactic mm-wavelength survey undertaken to date. These results are derived from maps covering over 0.7 deg<SUP>2</SUP>, made at λ= 1.1 mm, using the AzTEC continuum camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The maps were made in the two fields originally targeted at λ= 850 μm with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) in the SCUBA Half-Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) project, namely the Lockman Hole East (mapped to a depth of 0.9–1.3 mJy rms) and the Subaru/<I>XMM–Newton</I> Deep Field (mapped to a depth of 1.0–1.7 mJy rms). The wealth of existing and forthcoming deep multifrequency data in these two fields will allow the bright mm source population revealed by these new wide-area 1.1 mm images to be explored in detail in subsequent papers. Here, we present the maps themselves, a catalogue of 114 high-significance submillimetre galaxy detections, and a thorough statistical analysis leading to the most robust determination to date of the 1.1 mm source number counts. These new maps, covering an area nearly three times greater than the SCUBA SHADES maps, currently provide the largest sample of cosmological volumes of the high-redshift Universe in the mm or sub-mm. Through careful comparison, we find that both the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) and the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) North fields, also imaged with AzTEC, contain an excess of mm sources over the new 1.1 mm source-count baseline established here. In particular, our new AzTEC/SHADES results indicate that very luminous high-redshift dust enshrouded starbursts (<I>S</I><SUB>1.1mm</SUB> > 3 mJy) are 25–50 per cent less common than would have been inferred from these smaller surveys, thus highlighting the potential roles of cosmic variance and clustering in such measurements. We compare number count predictions from recent models of the evolving mm/sub-mm source population to these sub-mm bright galaxy surveys, which provide important constraints for the ongoing refinement of semi-analytic and hydrodynamical models of galaxy formation, and find that all available models overpredict the number of bright submillimetre galaxies found in this survey.</P>

        Crystal structure and magnetic properties of Ti-doped Bi<sub>0.84</sub>La<sub>0.16</sub>FeO<sub>3</sub> at morphotropic phase boundary

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We have studied the crystal structure and magnetic properties of Bi<SUB>0.84</SUB>La<SUB>0.16</SUB>Fe<SUB>1-x</SUB>Ti<SUB>x</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> (<I>x</I> = 0.02–0.1) at the morphotropic phase boundary of <I>R</I>3<I>c</I>, <I>Imma</I>, and <I>Pbam</I> phases. The results of Rietveld-refined X-ray diffraction patterns reveal the existence of multi-phase structures, including <I>R</I>3<I>c</I> + <I>Imma</I> for <I>x</I> = 0.02–0.06 and <I>Imma + Pbam</I> for <I>x</I> = 0.08–0.1. The studies of Raman scattering spectra indicate a structural transformation through the disappearance of typical <I>R</I>3<I>c</I> modes. This strongly influences the magnetic properties that are dependent on the crystalline phase ratio. In particular, the magnetic coercivity of <I>x</I> = 0.04–0.06 drastically changes when the <I>Imma</I> phase is dominant.         Synthesis of highly carboxylated latex particles using a power feed process

        Two series of highly carboxylated latex particles were synthesized via a power feed process. The concentration carboxylic groups were varied inside the particles and a gradient in the concentration from the interior to the surface was created. The power feed process, proposed by Bassett et al., was used for the synthesis of the functionalized materials and a mathematical model was proposed for this process and theoretical predictions for the concentration of carboxylic groups inside the particles were corroborated with experimental results. A methodology based on thermodynamic formalism is proposed to study the response of these materials to ion exchange.

        Cell Division in the Absence of Mitosis: The Unusual Case of the Fucoid Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis (Phaeophyceae)

        Fluorescence and electron microscopy were used to examine epidermal shedding in the fucoid alga, Ascophyllum nodosum. Mature meristoderm cells are ca. 50-100 x 30-40 ${\mu}m$ and highly polarized, with a single nucleus and chloroplasts near the base of the cell. Nuclei in these cells undergo mitosis when they are dividing to form a new cortical cell towards the middle of the frond, or anticlinal divisions as part of frond elongation. However, cytokinesis also occurs regularly in these cells when a new periclinal wall is deposited at about 30% of the cell length from the apical end. The newly formed distal cells are anucleate and without chloroplasts. Following cytokinesis the tangential walls then break at the thinnest point. The whole process is synchronous in adjoining epidermal cells across large areas of the frond surface, and this layer dehisces from the thallus. This is the only known plant or algal system in which cytokinesis regularly occurs in the absence of mitosis. We consider this process a novel form of programmed cell death.

      • Neoplastic Transformation Induced by the gep Oncogenes Involves the Scaffold Protein JNK-Interacting Leucine Zipper Protein

        <P>The activated mutants of the 관-subunits of G proteins G(12) and G(13) have been designated as the gep oncogenes owing to their ability to stimulate diverse oncogenic signaling pathways that lead to neoplastic transformation of fibroblast cell lines and tumorigenesis in nude mice models. Studies from our laboratory as well as others have shown that the growth-promoting activities of G관(12) and G관(13) involve potent activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs). Our previous studies have indicated that the JNK-interacting leucine zipper protein (JLP), a scaffold protein involved in the structural and functional organization of the JNK/p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase module, tethers G관(12) and G관(13) to the JNK signaling module. In the present study, in addition to demonstrating the physical association between JLP and G관(12), we show that this interaction is enhanced by the receptor- or mutation-mediated activation of G관(12). We also establish that JLP interacts with G관(12) through the C-terminal domain that has been previously identified to be involved in binding to G관(13). Furthermore, using this C-terminal domain as a competitively inhibitor of JLP that can disrupt G관(12)-JLP interaction, we demonstrate that JLP is required for the stimulation of JNK by G관(12). Our results also indicate that such JLP interaction is required for G관(12) as well as G관(13)-mediated neoplastic transformation of JLP. These studies demonstrate for the first time a functional role for JLP in the gep oncogene-regulated neoplastic signaling pathway.</P>
