      • Association Between XPD Asp312Asn Polymorphism and Esophageal Cancer Susceptibility: A Meta-analysis

        Duan, Xiao-Li,Gong, Heng,Zeng, Xian-Tao,Ni, Xiao-Bing,Yan, Yan,Chen, Wen,Liu, Guo-Lei Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.7

Objective: To investigate the association between xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD) Asp312Asn polymorphism and esophageal cancer (EC) susceptibility by meta-analysis. Methods: We searched PubMed up to April 9th, 2012, to identify relevant papers, and 8 published case-control studies including 2165 EC patients and 3141 healthy controls were yielded. Odds ratios (ORs) with relevant 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were applied to assess the association between XPD Asp312Asn polymorphism and EC susceptibility with the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software, version 2.2. Results: Overall, the meta-analysis results suggested the XPD Asp312Asn polymorphism to be significantly associated with EC susceptibility [(Asn/Asn+Asp/Asn) vs. Asp/Asp: OR=1.20, 95%CI=1.05-1.36, p=0.01; and Asp/Asn vs. Asp/Asp: OR=1.15, 95%CI =1.01-1.31, p=0.04]. In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity and cancer type, significantly associations were found for Caucasian populations [(Asn/Asn+Asp/Asn) vs. Asp/Asp: OR=1.26, 95%CI =1.08-1.47, p<0.001; Asp/Asn vs. Asp/Asp: OR=1.19, 95%CI =1.02-1.40, p=0.03] and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma [(Asn/Asn+Asp/Asn) vs. Asp/Asp: OR=1.19, 95%CI=1.01-1.41, p=0.04]. There was no heterogeneity and no publication bias existed. Conclusions: This meta-analysis shows that the XPD Asp312Asn polymorphism may be a risk factor for developing EC, especially for Caucasian populations and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Cucumber Growth and Nitrogen Uptake as Affected by Solution Temperature and NO3-:NH4+ Ratios during the Seedling

        Yan, Qiu-Yan,Duan, Zeng-Qiang,Li, Jun-Hui,Li, Xun,Dong, Jin-Long Korean Society of Horticultural Science 2013 원예과학기술지 Vol.31 No.4

The effect of solution temperature and nitrogen form on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) growth, photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism was investigated in hydroponic culture. Cucumber plants were grown for 35 days in a greenhouse at three constant solution temperatures ($15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $25^{\circ}C$) within a natural aerial temperature ($15-30^{\circ}C$). Four nitrate:ammonium ($NO{_3}^-:NH{_4}^+$) ratios (10:0, 8:2, 5:5, and 2:8 $mmol{\cdot}L^{-1}$) at constant nitrogen (N) concentration of $10mmol{\cdot}L^{-1}$ were applied within each solution temperature treatment. Results showed an increasing solution temperature enhanced plant growth (height, dry weight, and leaf area) in most N treatments. Dry weight accumulation was greatest at the 10:0 $NO{_3}^-:NH{_4}^+$ ratio in the $15^{\circ}C$ solution, the 5:5 ratio in the $20^{\circ}C$ solution and the 8:2 ratio in the $25^{\circ}C$ solution. Photosynthetic rate (Pn) response to solution temperature and $NO{_3}^-:NH{_4}^+$ ratio was similar to that of plant growth. Probably, the photosynthate shortage played a role in the reduced biomass formation. Increasing solution temperature enhanced the nitrate reductase (NR) activity, and further reduced shoots nitrate content. Our results indicate that the optimal ratio of nitrate to ammonium that promotes growth in hydroponic cucumber varies with solution temperature.

Lysinibacillus tabacifolii sp. nov., a Novel Endophytic Bacterium Isolated from Nicotiana tabacum Leaves

        Yan-Qing Duan,Song-Tao He,Qing-Qing Li,Ming-Feng Wang,Wen-Yuan Wang,Wei Zhe,Yong-Hong Cao,Ming-He Mo,Yu-Long Zhai,Wen-Jun Li 한국미생물학회 2013 The journal of microbiology Vol.51 No.3

A Gram-positive, catalase- and oxidase-positive, strictly aerobic, endospore-forming rod bacterium, designated K3514T, was isolated from the leaves of Nicotiana tabacum. The strain was able to grow at temperatures of 8–40°C, pH 5.0–10.0 and NaCl concentrations of 0–7%. The predominant quinones (>30%) of this strain were MK-7(H2) and MK-7. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain K3514T was affiliated to the genus Lysinibacillus, with its closest relatives being Lysinibacillus mangiferihumi (98.3% sequence similarity), Lysinibacillus sphaericus (97.9% sequence similarity), Lysinibacillus fusiformis (97.4% sequence similarity), and Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus (97.3% sequence similarity). However, low levels of DNA-DNA relatedness values suggested that the isolate was distinct from the other closest Lysinibacillus species. Additionally, based on analysis of morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics, the isolate could be differentiated from the closest known relatives. Therefore, based on polyphasic taxonomic data, the novel isolate likely represents a novel species, for which the name Lysinibacillus tabacifolii sp. nov. and the type strain K3514T (=KCTC 33042T =CCTCC AB 2012050T) are proposed.

TiO2 thin films prepared from aqueous solution and their sterilizing capability

        Sun Shu-qing,Hu Yan-tao,Xi Zheng-ying,Duan Chun-yan,Meng Yan 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2006 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.7 No.1

A liquid phase deposition method (LPD) has been devised for the deposition of TiO2 thin films on glass at a low temperature. The substrates were immersed in a diluted homogeneous aqueous solution which was prepared by mixing equal volumes of ammonium hexauorotitanate and boric acid solution. The TiO2 thin films obtained were well-adhered, homogenous and colored by interference of reflected light. XRD indicated TiO2 thin films showed a high degree of crystallinity and the crystal phase observed was anatase. SEM experiments showed that the films are formed by small crystallites having linear dimensions under 50 nm. Their thickness was in the range of 100~300 nm. The sterilizing experiment of S. aureus and E. coli showed that TiO2 thin films have excellent sterilizing activity. The optimum conditions of the films were with heat treatment at 400oC where their sterilizing percentage reached over 99% after 24h.

      • Efficacy and Safety of Endostar® Combined with Chemotherapy in Patients with Advanced Soft Tissue Sarcomas

        Zhang, Lu-Ping,Liao, Xing-Yun,Xu, Yan-Mei,Yan, Lv-Jun,Yan, Gui-Fang,Wang, Xin-Xin,Duan, Yu-Zhong,Sun, Jian-Guo Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.7

Background: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a heterogeneous group of tumors, and approximately 40-50% of patients with STS develop metastatic disease. The median overall survival of those patients was 12 months and their 5-year survival rate was 8%. Therefore, study on more effective treatment, especially the targeting therapies, is urgently needed. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Endostar$^{(R)}$ combined with chemotherapy in patients with advanced STS. Methods: A retrospective case-series study was conducted in Cancer Institute of PLA, Xinqiao Hospital. A total of 71 patients suffering from advanced STS (IIB - IV) were included, of whom 49 cases treated with chemotherapy alone were defined as the control group and the rest 22 cases treated with the traditional chemotherapy combined with Endostar$^{(R)}$ were defined as the test group. The short-term therapeutic effects including objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR) and safety were evaluated in the two groups. In the follow-up, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were also observed. Results: In the test and control groups, the ORR was 18.2% and 12.2%, respectively (P=0.767), and the DCR was 86.4% and 61.2%, respectively (P=0.034). The median time to progression in the test and control groups was 120 days and 70 days with significant difference (P = 0.017), while the median overall survival was 452 days and 286 days without significant difference (P=0.503). The one-year survival rate in the test group and control group was 56.2% and 35.4%, respectively, while the two-year survival rate was 30.2% and 26.5%, respectively. No significant difference in the side effects was found between the two groups. Conclusions: Endostar$^{(R)}$ combined with chemotherapy resulted in a higher DCR and longer PFS in the patients with advanced STS, and the toxicity was tolerable.

Damage detection for beam structures using an angle-between-string-and-horizon flexibility matrix

        Yan, Guirong,Duan, Zhongdong,Ou, Jinping Techno-Press 2010 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.36 No.5

The classical flexibility difference method detects damage by observing the difference of conventional deflection flexibility matrices between pre- and post-damaged states of a structure. This method is not able to identify multiple damage scenarios, and its criteria to identify damage depend upon the boundary conditions of structures. The key point behind the inability and dependence is revealed in this study. A more feasible flexibility for damage detection, the Angle-between-String-and-Horizon (ASH) flexibility, is proposed. The physical meaning of the new flexibility is given, and synthesis of the new flexibility matrix by modal frequencies and translational mode shapes is formulated. The damage indicators are extracted from the difference of ASH flexibility matrices between the pre- and post-damaged structures. One feature of the ASH flexibility is that the components in the ASH flexibility matrix are associated with elements instead of Nodes or DOFs. Therefore, the damage indicators based on the ASH flexibility are mapped to structural elements directly, and thus they can pinpoint the damaged elements, which is appealing to damage detection for complex structures. In addition, the change in the ASH flexibility caused by damage is not affected by boundary conditions, which simplifies the criteria to identify damage. Moreover, the proposed method can determine relatively the damage severity. Because the proposed damage indicator of an element mainly reflects the deflection change within the element itself, which significantly reduces the influence of the damage in one element on the damage indicators of other damaged elements, the proposed method can identify multiple damage locations. The viability of the proposed approach has been demonstrated by numerical examples and experimental tests on a cantilever beam and a simply supported beam.
