Desmoplastic ameloblastoma is a rare histologic variant of ameloblastoma. It shows important differences in anatomic distribution, histologic appearance, and radiographic findings compared with the general type of ameloblastoma. It is histologically characterized by an abundance of densely collagenous stroma and radiographically a mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesion. We present three cases of desmoplastic ameloblastoma. All the patients complained on buccal swelling with or without pain and the sites of occurrence were the anterior and the premolar region. Plain radiographs showed mixed radiopaque-radiolucent lesion with ill-defined or diffuse sclerotic margin and no external root resorption. Additionally, CT scans revealed buccal expansion and relatively well-defined margin of the lesions. The clinical and radiographic features of the presented cases were compared with those of the desmoplastic ameloblastoma in the previous literatures. (Korean J Oral Maxillofac Radiol 2006; 36 : 63-8)

There are many reports of the surgical management for the craniofacial abnormalities arising from the irradiation of the head and face for treatment of childhood cancers. Since the mordern combined-modality theraphy for childhood cancers began in the late 1960s and the early 1970s, recent reports have described the occular, dental and maxillo-facial abnormalities after irradiation in long-term survivors of cancers of the head and face. The resultant deformities may be known to be difficult to reconstruct with surgical techniques. This paper describes the late reconstructive surgery for the unilateral orbital and malar hypoplasia after eyeball enucleation and irradiation during childhood to correct the facial asymmetry and expand the contracted orbital socket into the functional dimension for the retaining eyeball prosthesis with spherical implant. We reports the satisfactory preliminary results from the midfacial osteotomy through the supero-lateral orbital rim and malar bone and the antero-lateral repositioning with the autogenous bone grafting in 26 year-old female patient who will be planned to make the new eyeball prosthesis by the department of ophthalmology.

One of the serious problems of functional languages is the slow speed in execution of functional programs. By choosing and desiging the appropriate reduction model and machine architecture and by using clever compiling techniques this problem can be overcome. The serial-combinator-based compiling technique is known as a very efficient one for the functional languages, especially in parallel processing. The writers developed a serial-combinator-based translator and an interpretative graph reducer for Sub Miranda, a test language, on the XENIX V system. The translator is composed of three phases. The first phase translates the SubMiranda source program into λ-calculus graph, the second phase transforms the λ-calculus graph into supercombinator graph, and the final phase transforms the supercombinator graph into serial combinator graph. The correctness of the translator was examined by the intermediate codes from translating a large number of the SubMiranda programs and by the results of reducing the translated serial combinator graphs.

<P>In an effort to synthesize homogenized single phase d-CoSb3, this study considers the mechanical alloying (MA) of elemental Co and Sb powders using a nominal stoichiometric composition followed by hot pressing. Single phase, undoped CoSb3 skutterudites were successfully produced by vacuum hot pressing using MA powders without subsequent annealing. Phase transformations during mechanical alloying, powder annealing, and hot pressing were systematically investigated using XRD and SEM. Thermoelectric properties were measured and compared with the results of similar studies. Temperature dependences were also evaluated, and their correlations to phase transformation were examined.</P>
Effect of silica fume and gypsum on properties of Mgbased hydraulic lime

In the present study, to improve the properties of Mg-based hydraulic lime prepared by using Korean low-grade dolomite,inorganic admixtures such as silica fume and gypsum were mixed with the dolomite, and the properties of the resultinghydraulic lime were evaluated depending on the amount of admixtures and the curing time. The silica fume mixing ratio was10%, 20%, and 30%, and the gypsum mixing ratio was 0% and 3%. The samples, prepared as a paste and a mortar, werecured at a temperature of 20 oC and a humidity of 95% for 3, 7, 28, 56, and 91 days. The hydration characteristics and thephysical properties of the samples at each curing time were evaluated. The experimental results showed an increase of C-SHproduction was increased with increasing silica fume mixing ratio and curing time. The quantity of C-S-H produced wasgreater in the samples prepared without mixing gypsum. The measurement of the compressive strength showed that thestrength was decreased at a silica fume mixing ratio higher than a certain level regardless of the mixing of gypsum. Thestrength was less decreased in the samples prepared by mixing gypsum. The best properties were found in the sample preparedby mixing 20% silica fume and 3% gypsum.

Resistance to hypomethylating agents (HMAs) in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a concerning problem. Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) is a key cell cycle modulator and is known to be associated with an activation of the PI3K pathway, which is related to the stabilization of DNA methyltransferase 1 (DNMT1), a target of HMAs. We investigated the effects of volasertib on HMA-resistant cell lines (MOLM/AZA-1 and MOLM/DEC-5) derived from MOLM-13, and bone marrow (BM) samples obtained from patients with MDS (BM blasts >5%) or AML evolved from MDS (MDS/AML). Volasertib effectively inhibited the proliferation of HMA-resistant cells with suppression of DNMTs and PI3K/AKT/mTOR and ERK pathways. Volasertib also showed significant inhibitory effects against primary BM cells from patients with MDS or MDS/AML, and the effects of volasertib inversely correlated with DNMT3B expression. The DNMT3B-overexpressed AML cells showed primary resistance to volasertib treatment. Our data suggest that volasertib has a potential role in overcoming HMA resistance in patients with MDS and MDS/ AML by suppressing the expression of DNMT3 enzymes and PI3K/AKT/mTOR and ERK pathways. We also found that DNMT3B overexpression might be associated with resistance to volasertib.

<P>The purpose of this work is to influence of CaO concentrations of 5.0 wt.% and 10.0 wt.%, slurry feeding rate of 200~400 /min, rotating rate of drum of 5,000 and 10,000 rpm, inlet and outlet temperature on the synthesis of Ca(OH)2 powder, and the synthesis of precipitated calcium carbonate by carbonation process using Ca(OH)2 prepared by spray drying method. As the feeding rate of slurry was increased, the particle size of Ca(OH)2 was decreased. Regardless of rotating rate of drum, when the concentration of CaO was 5.0 wt.% and 10.0 wt.%, the morphology of Ca(OH)2 showed spherical shape of 10~30 μm and 20~60 μm, respectively. The specific surface area of synthesized Ca(OH)2 was 27~30 m2/g. When the initial reaction temperature was 11 °C and 30 °C, the shape and particle size of precipitated calcium carbonate synthesized in the carbonation process showed the rectangular shape of 0.1~0.4 μm and the spindle shape of 0.5~1.0 μm, respectively.</P>
Thermoelectric Properties of Manganese Monosilicide Synthesized by Mechanical Alloying Process

<P>Manganese silicide is one of the potential thermoelectric materials for high temperature application. As a fundamental investigation on these materials group, manganese monosilicides were synthesized by the mechanical alloying of stoichiometric elemental powder compositions, and the as-milled powders were consolidate by vacuum hot pressing. Phase transformation and microstructure evolution during mechanical alloying and hot consolidation were investigated using XRD and SEM. Near single phase of monosilicides were successfully produced in this process. Thermoelectric properties as a function of temperature were evaluated in terms of Seebeek coefficient, electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity and the figure of merit for the hot pressed specimens. Mechanically alloyed manganese monosilicide, MnSi, appeared to have a potential as a thermoelectric material in this study.</P>
