      • COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN AND BENEFITS OF TOURISM DEVELOPMENT IN THE TURPAN VALLEY, XINJIANG AUTONOMOUS REGION OF CHINA

        While western scholars such as Jamal and Gertz (1995), Tosun (2005), Fallon and Kriwoken (2003), usually presume that community participation is critical to sustainable tourism development, Chinese scholar Wenjun Li (2006) boldly states that it is possible for a community to achieve benefits of tourism development despite weak involvement in the planning and management of a tourist destination. Our survey of government officials, tourist business operators and residents in seven locations in the World Heritage-listed Turpan Valley in the Xinjiang province found that top-down, government-led participation is necessary and desirable, and does not detract from stakeholders' perception that they are sharing in the benefits of tourism development in the region.

      • 예술고등학교 학생들의 특기적성을 고려한 프로젝트형 물리 탐구학습

        본 연구는 학습자 중심의 다양한 교수-학습 방법의 모색을 시도하는 교육 여건에 부응하여 물리학습에서 특기적성을 살린 프로젝트형 탐구학습 프로그램을 개발하여, 이를 예술계 고등하교 학생들에게 적용한 후, 학생들의 과학에 관련된 태도가 어떻게 변화했는지를 알아보고, 특기적성용 프로젝트 탐구학습에 대한 학생들의 반응을 살펴보았다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 학습자로 하여금 자신의 수준과 적성에 부합한 과제를 선택하도록 학습 동기를 유발하고 과제를 수행하는 과정을 단계적으로 수준을 높여가면서 학생들 스스로 문제를 해결해 나가는 자기 주도적인 학습이 가능하도록 하였다. 학생들의 프로젝트 수행결과에 대해서는 자기평가와 교사 면담을 통해 평가하도록 하였다. In order to contribute to contemporary educational environment searching for a variety of student-centered learning programs, this study attempts to make desirable project inquiry learning programs for physics educations which help to develop individual student's special ability and his or her aptitude. The programs were applied to the students of an Arts high school. After that this study tried to find out how students' attitudes toward science learning have changed, and how. they reacted to the "project inquiry-learning programs". In this study learners were allowed to choose an assignment for themselves equivalent to their academic ability and aptitude. This kind of activities motivates students for learning, makes them higher the standard of the process carrying out their assignments step by step, and finally enables them to have self-regulated learning, in which they settle the problems on their own. The result of the students' learning were evaluated by the self-evaluation and teachers' interviews with them.

        This study was performed to evaluation the skin and eye irritation of etofenprox 8% and spinosad 4% combination in male New Zealand White rabbits. In skin irritation test, the combination of etofenprox and spinosad did not showed any change of body weight but caused slight skin irritation with the P.I.I. (primary irritation index) value 0.25. The etofenprox and spinosad combination showed severe eye irritation 1 h, 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h after ocular treatment, having the A.O.I. (acute ocular irritation) value of 37.3. Therefore, these result indicated that the combination of etofenprox and spinosad might be irritant formulation on eye and skin.

        Chemical Composition and Antibacterial Activities of Illicium verum Against Antibiotic-Resistant Pathogens

        In recent years, human pathogenic microorganisms have developed multiple drug resistance and caused serious nosocomial infections. In this study, we identified four new antimicrobial compounds from the Chinese herbal medicine Illicium verum and assessed their antibacterial efficacies. The supercritical CO2 and ethanol extracts of Illicium verum showed substantial antibacterial activity against 67 clinical drug-resistant isolates, including 27 Acinetobacter baumannii, 20 Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and 20 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The diethyl ether (EE) fraction obtained from partition extraction and supercritical CO2 extracts revealed an antibacterial activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration value of 0.15–0.70mg/mL and 0.11mg/mL, respectively. The EE fraction of I. verum showed synergetic effects with some commercial antibiotics. The antimicrobial mechanism was investigated with killing curves and scanning electron microscopy observation. The chemical components of the extracts were analyzed by spectrophotometry; (E)-anethole, anisyl acetone, anisyl alcohol, and anisyl aldehyde exhibited antibacterial activity against different clinical isolates. These extracts from I. verum can be further developed into antibiotic medicines due to their proven antibacterial activity.

      • Fenofibrate Increases Radiosensitivity in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma via Inducing G2/M Arrest and Apoptosis

        Radiation therapy is an important treatment for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, how to promote radiation sensitivity in HNSCC remains a challenge. This study aimed to investigate the radiosensitizing effects of fenofibrate on HNSCC and explore the underlying mechanisms. HNSCC cell lines CNE-2 and KB were subjected to ionizing radiation (IR), in the presence or absence of fenofibrate treatment. Cell growth and survival, apoptosis and cell cycle were evaluated. In addition, CNE-2 cells were xenografted into nude mice and subjected to IR and/or fenofibrate treatment. The expression of cyclinB and CDK1 was detected by Western blotting. Our results showed that fenofibrate efficiently radiosensitized HNSCC cells and xenografts in mice, and induced apoptosis and G2/M arrest via reducing the activity of the CDK1/cyclinB1 kinase complex. These data suggest that fenofibrate could be a promising radiosensitizer for HNSCC radiotherapy.

        Novel application of Influenza A virus-inoculated chorioallantoic membrane to characterize a NP-specific monoclonal antibody for immunohistochemistry assaying

        Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) are widely applied in disease diagnoses. Herein, we report a MAb, WF-4, against Influenza A virus nucleoprotein (NP), its broad response with Influenza A virus, and its application in an immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay. WF-4 was screened by immunofluorescence assay (IFA). The results showed that its reactivity with baculovirus-expressed full-length recombinant NP (rNP) in Western blot (WB), indicating its IHC applicability. Fifteen Influenza A virus (reference subtypes H1 to H15) infected chicken embryonated chorioallantoic membranes (CAM), fixed by formalin, were all detectable in the WF-4-based IHC assay. Also, the reactivity of the IHC test with NP from experimentally inoculated H6N1 and from all recent outbreaks of H5 subtype avian Influenza A virus (AIV) field cases in Taiwan showed positive results. Our data indicate that CAM, a by-product of Influenza A virus preparation, is helpful for Influenza A virus-specific MAb characterization, and that the WF-4 MAb recognizes conserved and linear epitopes of Influenza A virus NP. Therefore, WF-4 is capable of detecting NP antigens via IHC and may be suitable for developing various tests for diagnosis of Influenza A virus and, especially, AIV infection.

        An Agent Gaming and Genetic Algorithm Hybrid Method for Factory Location Setting and Factory/Supplier Selection Problems

        This paper first presents two supply chain design problems: 1) a factory location setting and factory selection problem, and 2) a factory location setting and factory/supplier selection problem. The first involves a number of location known retailers choosing one factory to supply their demands from a number of factories whose locations are to be determined. The goal is to minimize the transportation and manufacturing cost to satisfy the demands. The problem is then augmented into the second problem, where the procurement cost of the raw materials from a chosen material supplier (from a number of suppliers) is considered for each factory. Economic beneficial is taken into account in the cost evaluation. Therefore, the partner selections will influence the cost of the supply chain significantly. To solve these problems, an agent gaming and genetic algorithm hybrid method (AGGAHM) is proposed. The AGGAHM consecutively and alternatively enable and disable the advancement of agent gaming and the evolution of genetic computation. Computation results on solving a number of examples by the AGGAHM were compared with those from methods of a general genetic algorithm and a mutual frozen genetic algorithm. Results showed that the AGGAHM outperforms the methods solely using genetic algorithms. In addition, various parameter settings are tested and discussed to facilitate the supply chain designs.

        Glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase 1 regulates adipocyte differentiation by altering nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate content

        Objective: This study was performed to examine whether the porcine glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase 1 (GOT1) gene has important functions in regulating adipocyte differentiation. Methods: Porcine GOT1 knockout and overexpression vectors were constructed and transfected into the mouse adipogenic 3T3-L1 cells. Lipid droplets levels were measured after 8 days of differentiation. The mechanisms through which GOT1 participated in lipid deposition were examined by measuring the expression of malate dehydrogenase 1 (MDH1) and malic enzyme (ME1) and the cellular nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) content. Results: GOT1 knockout significantly decreased lipid deposition in the 3T3-L1 cells (p< 0.01), whereas GOT1 overexpression significantly increased lipid accumulation (p<0.01). At the same time, GOT1 knockout significantly decreased the NADPH content and the expression of MDH1 and ME1 in the 3T3-L1 cells. Overexpression of GOT1 significantly increased the NADPH content and the expression of MDH1 and ME1, suggesting that GOT1 regulated adipocyte differentiation by altering the NADPH content. Conclusion: The results preliminarily revealed the effector mechanisms of GOT1 in regulating adipose differentiation. Thus, a theoretical basis is provided for improving the quality of pork and studies on diseases associated with lipid metabolism.         Efficacy of Ethanol Ablation for Benign Thyroid Cysts and Predominantly Cystic Nodules: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

        Background: Ultrasound-guided minimally invasive procedures are widely used to treat thyroid diseases. The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of ethanol ablation (EA) in comparison with other non-surgical options in the treatment of benign thyroid cystic nodules. Methods: We conducted a systematic search of studies on EA for thyroid cystic nodules, mainly in the Ovid-MEDLINE and Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases. The standardized mean difference (SMD) of the volume reduction ratio (VRR) after EA versus other non-surgical treatments comprised the primary outcome, whereas the odds ratio (OR) of therapeutic success rates between the two groups comprised the secondary outcome. Results: The meta-analysis included 19 studies (four randomized controlled trials and 15 non-randomized studies) with 1,514 participants. The cumulative VRR of EA was 83.908% (95% confidence interval [CI], 79.358% to 88.457%). EA had a significantly higher pooled VRR (SMD, 0.381; 95% CI, 0.028 to 0.734; P=0.030), but not a significantly higher pooled therapeutic success rate (OR, 0.867; 95% CI, 0.132 to 5.689; P=0.880), than other forms of non-surgical management including radiofrequency ablation (RFA), polidocanol sclerotherapy, and simple aspiration with or without saline flush. However, the VRR and therapeutic success rate were not significantly different between EA and RFA. Major complications were recorded only in six patients (0.53%) with self-limiting dysphonia. Conclusion: The role of EA as the first-line treatment for benign thyroid cysts and predominantly cystic nodules is supported by its high effectiveness and good safety profile compared to other currently available non-surgical options.

        Improved Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm for Adaptive Frequency-Tracking Control in Wireless Power Transfer Systems

        Recently, wireless power transfer (WPT) via coupled magnetic resonances has attracted a lot of attention owing to its long operation distance and high efficiency. However, the WPT systems is over-coupling and a frequency splitting phenomenon occurs when resonators are placed closely, which leads to a decrease in the transfer power. To solve this problem, an adaptive frequency tracking control (AFTC) was used based on a closed-loop control scheme. An improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm was proposed with the AFTC to track the maximum power point in real time. In addition, simulations were carried out. Finally, a WPT system with the AFTC was demonstrated to experimentally validate the improved PSO algorithm and its tracking performance in terms of optimal frequency.
