Photocatalytic Effect for TiO2/ACF Composite Electrochemically Prepared with TNB Electrolyte

        Ming-Liang Chen,Chang-Sung Lim,Won-Chun Oh 한국탄소학회 2007 Carbon Letters Vol.8 No.3

[ TiO2 ]ACF composites were prepared by the electrochemical method with Titanium (IV) n-butoxide (TNB) electrolyte under different electrochemical operation time. The BET surface area for TiO2/ACF composites decrease with the increase of electrochemical operation time. There is a single crystal structure which is anatase in all of the samples from the data of XRD. The SEM micrphotographs of TiO2/ACF composites show that the TiO2 particles were well mixed with the ACF. There are O and P with strong C and Ti peaks in all samples from EDX results, and it also shows that a decrease of the C content with a increasing of Ti content with increasing of the electrochemical operation time in the over all composites. DSC cures show that the exothermic peak of all composites at 560℃ represents the transformation heat of amorphous parts to anatase phase and the discontinuous grain growth of the transformed anatase particles. Finally, the excellent photoactivity of TiO2/ACF composites (especially, ACFT10) could be attributed that the decrease of concentration of MB can be concluded to be much faster for the adsorption by ACF than for photocatalytic decomposition by TiO2.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue by CNT/TiO2 Composites Prepared from MWCNT and Titanium n-butoxide with Benzene

        Chen, Ming-Liang,Zhang, Feng-Jun,Oh, Won-Chun The Korean Ceramic Society 2008 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.45 No.11

In this study, CNT/$TiO_2$ composites were prepared using surface modified Multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and titanium n-butoxide (TNB) with benzene. The composites were characterized by nitrogen adsorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), FT-IR spectra, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The UV radiation induced photoactivity of the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites was tested using a fixed concentration of methylene blue (MB, $C_{16}H_{18}N_3S{\cdot}Cl{\cdot}3H_2O$) in an aqueous solution. Finally, it can be considered that the MB removal effect of the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites is not only due to the adsorption effect of MWCNT and photocatalytic degradation of $TiO_2$, but also to electron transfer between MWCNT and $TiO_2$.

Carbon/TiO2 Prepared from Anatase to Pitch and their Photocatalytic Performance

        Ming-Liang Chen,Young-Shin Ko,Won-Chun Oh 한국탄소학회 2007 Carbon Letters Vol.8 No.1

Carbon/TiO2 composites were prepared by CCl4 solvent mixing method with different mixing ratios. Since the carbon layers derived from pitch on the TiO2 particles were porous, the Carbon/TiO2 composite series showed a good adsorptivity and photo decomposition activity. The BET surface area for the carbon layer in the sample increases to increasing with pitch contents. The SEM results present to the characterization of porous texture on the Carbon/TiO2 composite and pitch distributions on the surfaces for all the materials used. From XRD data, a weak and broad carbon peak of graphene with pristine anatase peaks were observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns for the Carbon/TiO2. The EDX spectra show the presence of C, O and S with strong Ti peaks. Most of these samples are richer in carbon and major Ti metal than any other elements. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of Carbon/TiO2 with slope relationship between relative concentration (C/C0) of MB and t could be attributed to the homogeneous coated pitch on the external surface by CCl4 solvent method.

On eBay's Fee Structure from a Channel Coordination Perspective

        Chen, Jen-Ming,Cheng, Hung-Liang,Chien, Mei-Chen Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers 2010 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.9 No.2

Can eBay.com's fee structure coordinate the channel? It's a critical strategic problem in e-commerce operations and an interesting research hypothesis as well. eBay's fees include three parts: monthly subscription fee, insertion fee, and final value fee (i.e., a revenue sharing portion), which represent a generic form of revenue sharing fee structure between the retailer and the vendor in a supply chain. This research deals with such a channel consisting of a price-setting vendor who sells products through eBay's marketplace exclusively to the end customers. The up- and down-stream channel relationship is consignment-based revenue sharing. We use a game-theoretic approach with assumption of the retailer (i.e., eBay.com) being a Stackelberg-leader and the vendor being a follower. The Stackelberg-leader decides on the terms of revenue sharing contract (i.e., fee structure), and the follower (vendor) decides on how many units to sell and the items' selling price. This study formulates several profit-maximization models by considering the effects of the retail price on the demand function. Under such settings, we show that eBay's fee structure can improve the channel efficiency; yet it cannot coordinate the channel optimally.

Preparation of AC/TiO2 Composites from Activated Carbon Modified by HNO3 and Their Photocatalytic Activity

        Ming-Liang Chen,Won-Chun Oh 한국탄소학회 2007 Carbon Letters Vol.8 No.2

In this work, activated carbon (AC) after HNO3 modification was used as the support during the production of supported TiO2 to increase the high deposition efficiency and the photocatalytic activity. The results of N2 adsorption showed that the BET surface area of samples decreased with an increasing of the concentration of HNO3 due to the penetration of TiO2. From XRD data, a single crystal structure of anatase peak was observed in diffraction patterns for the AC coated with titanium complexes. From the SEM results, almost all particles were aggregated with each other at the carbon surface and AC was covered with TiO2 particles in all of the samples. The EDX spectra show the presence of C, O, Ti and other elements. It was also observed a decreasing of amount of C content with increasing Ti and O content from the EDX. The results of FT-IR revealed that the modified AC contained more surface oxygen bearing groups than that of the original AC. The effect of surface acidity and basity calculated from Boehm titration method was also evaluated from correlations as a function of NaOH, NaHCO3, and Na2CO3 uptake. The surface modification of AC by HNO3 leads to an increase in the catalytic efficiency of AC/TiO2 catalysts, and the catalytic efficiency increases with increasing of HNO3 concentration.

Characterization of AC/TiO2 Composite Prepared with Pitch Binder and Their Photocatalytic Activity

Chen, Ming-Liang,Bae, Jang-Soon,Oh, Won-Chun Korean Chemical Society 2006 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.27 No.9

In this study, we have prepared pitch binded AC (activated carbon)/$AC/TiO_2$ composites photocatalysts through carbon tetrachloride solvent method. The developed samples were characterized with surface properties, structural crystallinity between AC and $AC/TiO_2$, elemental identification and photocatalytic activity. The results of the textural surface properties demonstrate that there are slight increases in the BET surface area and adsorbed volume from adsorption isotherm of composite samples with increasing of the amount of AC. The SEM results present to the characterization of porous texture on the pitch/AC/$AC/TiO_2$ composites and homogenous compositions in the particle for all the materials used. From XRD data, a weak and broad carbon peak of graphene remained rutile peaks kept with anatase structure were observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns for the pitch/AC/$AC/TiO_2$ composites. The EDX spectra show the presence of C, O and S with strong Ti peaks. Most of these samples are richer in carbon and major Ti metal than any other elements. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of the pitch/AC/$AC/TiO_2$ composites between relative concentration ($c/c_o$) of MB and UV irradiation time could be attributed to the both effects between photocatalysis of the supported $AC/TiO_2$ and adsorptivity of the two kinds of carbons.

Characterization of composite prepared with different mixing ratios of TiO2 to activated carbon and their photocatalytic activity

        Chen, Ming-Liang,Bae, Jang-Soon,Ko, Young-Shin,Oh, Won-Chun The Korean Society of Analytical Sciences 2006 분석과학 Vol.19 No.5

In this work, pitch/activated carbon/$TiO_2$ composite were prepared by $CCl_4$ solvent method with different mixing ratios. The BET surface area of pitch/activated carbon/$TiO_2$ composite has a significantly increase with increasing activated carbon content in pitch/activated carbon/$TiO_2$ composite. The surface structure and elemental compositions of the composite were studied by SEM and EDX, respectively. The SEM results were presented to the characterization of porous texture on the pitch/activated carbon/$TiO_2$ composite. And EDX data was shown the presence of C, O, S, Ti and other elements. The structural properties of the composite were studied in XRD measurements. The $TiO_2$ crystal phases of the pitch/activated carbon/$TiO_2$ composite had lots of rutile-type structure which transforms from anatase-type with a little of anatase-type structure. The photocatalytic activities of the composite were evaluated using a photo-decomposition method under UV lamp. The pitch/activated carbon/$TiO_2$ composites were observed better photocatalytic activity than that of pristine $TiO_2$.

Synthesis and Characterization of Metal (Pt, Pd and Fe)-graphene Composites

        Ming-Liang Chen,박종영,최종근,오원춘 한국세라믹학회 2011 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.48 No.2

In this study, we prepared graphene by using the modified Hummers-Offeman method and then introduced the metals (Pt, Pd and Fe) for dispersion on the surface of the graphene for synthesis of metal-graphene composites. The characterization of the prepared graphene and metal-graphene composites was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). According to the results, it can be observed that the prepared graphene consists of thin stacked flakes of shapes having a well-defined multilayered structure at the edge. And the metal particles are dispersed uniformly on the surface of the graphene with an average particle size of 20 nm.
