Objective Centipede stings are a common problem in tropical countries. Current treatment guidelines do not include recommendations for antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent the associated bacterial infection since no previous study has assessed the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment in patients bitten by centipedes. Thus, this study aimed to compare the effectiveness of antibiotic prophylaxis over placebo for the skin infections that occur after a centipede sting. Methods In this randomized, double-blind, multi-center clinical trial conducted in the emergency departments in four hospitals, patients with any history of a centipede sting were prospectively enrolled and divided randomly into two groups. One group received dicloxacillin and the other a placebo. The primary outcome was the incidence of wound infection 3 to 5 days after the centipede sting. Results From December 2014 to October 2015, a total of 83 patients were enrolled in the study and were randomized into antibiotic (n=43) and placebo (n=40) groups. Two patients in the antibiotic group developed wound infections, while none showed wound infection in the placebo group (5% vs. 0%). The wound infection rate did not differ significantly between the two groups (P=0.496). Conclusion Antibiotic prophylaxis may be unnecessary in cases of centipede stings. Proper wound care is an adequate and appropriate treatment for patients with centipede stings. However, the patient should be re-evaluated for detection of secondary bacterial infection.

In this paper, a circuit technique to realize Max/Min finder for fuzzy applications is presented. The maximum or minimum operation can be provided by setting the external control current without changing the topology, while the input signals are in the voltage forms. The proposed Max/Min finder configuration is simple and suitable for fabrication in standard CMOS technology. The circuit performance is studied using PSPICE analog simulation program. Simulation results verifying the performance of the proposed scheme are agreed with the expected values.

Fusarium root rot caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium solani is one of the most important fungal diseases of cassava in Thailand, resulting in high yield losses of more than 80%. This study aimed to investigate if the exogenous application of salicylic acid formulations (Zacha) can induce resistance in cassava against Fusarium root rot and observe the biochemical changes in induced cassava leaf tissues through synchrotron radiation based on Fourier-transform infrared (SR-FTIR) microspectroscopy. We demonstrated that the application of Zacha11 prototype formulations could induce resistance against Fusarium root rot in cassava. The in vitro experimental results showed that Zacha11 prototype formulations inhibited the growth of F. solani at approximately 34.83%. Furthermore, a significant reduction in the disease severity of Fusarium root rot disease at 60 days after challenge inoculation was observed in cassava plants treated with Zacha11 at a concentration of 500 ppm (9.0%). Population densities of F. solani were determined at 7 days after inoculation. Treatment of the Zacha11 at a concentration of 500 ppm resulted in reduced populations compared with the distilled water control and differences among treatment means at each assay date. Moreover, the SRFTIR spectral changes of Zacha11-treated epidermal tissues of leaves had higher integral areas of lipids, lignins, and pectins (1,770-1,700/cm), amide I (1,700-1,600/ cm), amide II (1,600-1,500/cm), hemicellulose, lignin (1,300-1,200/cm), and cellulose (1,155/cm). Therefore, alteration in defensive carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins contributed to generate barriers against Fusarium invasion in cassava roots, leading to lower the root rot disease severity.
An MMSE Infinite Impulse Response Equalizer for Perpendicular Recording Channels with Jitter Noise
Piya Kovintavewat,Chanon Warisarn,Pornchai Supnithi 대한전자공학회 2008 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2008 No.7
A finite impulse response (FIR) equalizer is practically employed in conjunction with the Viterbi detector for data detection process in magnetic recording channels. However, the FIR equalizer with a large number of taps is required at high density storage channels. It is well-known that an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter with a small number of taps can closely approximate such an FIR filter. In this paper, we propose the IIR filter for perpendicular recording channels, based on a minimum mean-squared error approach, and compare its performance with the FIR equalizer in the presence and in the absence of media jitter noise. Results indicate that the IIR equalizer performs better than the FIR equalizer for all jitter noise levels, especially when the number of equalizer taps is small (e.g., 3 taps) and the normalized recording density is high.

A straightforward method for functionalizing natural rubber (NR) with poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL), a temperature-responsive polymer having lower critical solution temperature (LCST) near human body temperature, has been successfully developed using free radical crosslinking reaction. Effects of polymer and initiator concentrations, reaction temperature, and reaction time on immobilization percentage of the synthesized polymer were investigated. Results showed 100% immobilization percentage when using 100 phr of PNVCL, 10 phr of benzoyl peroxide at 75 °C within 36 h. For the temperature responsiveness, the water swelling, water contact angle, and dye release of the crosslinked NR were measured. Its LCST ca. 32-34 ˚C was close to that of the pristine PNVCL. The dye adsorption studies revealed the Langmuir isotherm indicating monolayer coverage. Dye release could be triggered by increasing the temperature above the LCST, suggesting its potential uses in drug release technology. In addition, this temperature-responsive NR would potentially be used as a novel responsive rubber-based material in various applications, such as sensors and biomedical materials.
A Spin Stand Study of Head-to-Media Spacing Sensitivity for Shingled Magnetic Recording
Pichet Nhunork,Chanon Warisarn,Damrongsak Tongsomporn 대한전자공학회 2017 대한전자공학회 학술대회 Vol.2017 No.1
Shingled magnetic recording (SMR) is a new hard drive technology that allows the tracks on a platter to be layered on top of each other, just like roof shingles on a house, to increase the platter density or tracks per inch (TPI), which leads to achieve the higher areal density (AD). At high AD; however, head-to-media spacing (HMS) must be investigated due to it directly affects to write and read performance in the writing and reading processes. Therefore, this paper presents the HMS sensitivity for both of conventional magnetic recording (CMR) and SMR on the spin stand tester. The experimental results indicate that the HMS characteristics of SMR have almost the same trend as for CMR, which reveals that shingled writing technique can be adopted to extend the AD of the currently magnetic recording technology.

Postprocessor for generic numerical control (NC) machines is introduced in this article. The proposed postprocessor can convert the cutter location data from general CAD/CAM system or the path data from halftone bitmap picture to NC machine control command in the form of standard G-code. The purpose of this work is proposed a high efficiency postprocessor that can be generated linear and helical interpolation in G-code machine command without requiring CAD/CAM system facility. The input data of the postprocessor can also be directly acquired from x-y coordinates of workpiece. The proposed postprocessor is developed using visual C# programming language under window XP environment. G-code generated from the proposed postprocessor using the cutter location data of sample bitmap picture is used for experimental demonstration with generic NC machine. As the result, the proposed postprocessor exhibits a benefit for simple NC machine tool.
