NASH Therapy: omega 3 supplementation, vitamin E, insulin sensitizers and statin drugs

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the more aggressive form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NASH can progress to hepatic fibrosis, cirrhosis, portal hypertension and primary liver cancer. Therapy is evolving with a substantial number of trials of promising new agents now in progress. In this article however, we will examine data for several older forms of therapy which have been fairly extensively studied over the years: Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid (PUFA) supplements, vitamin E, insulin sensitizing agents with a focus on pioglitazone and statin agents. Early interest in PUFA derived from their potential benefit in cardio-metabolic disease and the close association of NAFLD/NASH with Metabolic Syndrome. Results have been variable although most studies show reduction of liver fat without other major effects and their effects are influenced by concomitant weight loss and underlying genetic factors. Vitamin E has had some efficacy in pediatric NASH but questionable efficacy in even mild NASH among adults. Pioglitazone has shown significant histological benefit in a number of trials but concern over side-effects (especially weight gain) have dampened enthusiasm. A newer insulin sensitizer, liraglutide, has also shown promise in a small randomized, controlled trial. Very limited data exists regarding the histological effects of the statins in NASH and these agents appear to be fairly neutral with neither clear cut benefit nor detriment. Deepening how cultural capital structures consumption of the performing arts

This paper deepens existing research that suggests cultural capital (CC), a status-laden resource linked to social class, associates with differences in consumption values, consumption portfolios (range of products consumed), and emic (consumers’ own) interpretations of performing arts. Our research context comprises attendance at the live and recorded performing arts in a large metropolitan city located in a Western country in which the dominant language is English. The research methods comprise long interviews with, and observations of, a sample of 36 performing arts patrons who had attended a classical music concert at least once: specifically, 18 low CC and 18 high CC. Analysis suggests several advances on previous research. Specific subsets of consumption values linked to CC in the prior literature, associate with LCC or HCC. These consumption values can be viewed as macro-values, which associate with numerous micro-values. Additional consumption values worthy of additional exploration emerged from data analysis. Consumption portfolios identified in prior research, are confirmed as associating with CC.

The aim of this project has been to plot the locations of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) drop-off sites in the Milwaukee Metro Area. Based on the eleven farm’s drop-off sites, a public Google Map has been created showing these drop-off points and the appropriately linked farms. In the focus of socioeconomic interests, these sites have been correlated with 2000 Census tract information dealing with percentages of White and Black neighborhoods,rates of bachelor’s degrees and areas where median income is below $10,000 dollars. Results show that drop-off sites are clustered in those areas where there is a higher concentration of White residents, in contrast to few or no drop-off sites in predominantly Black tracts sites. As well, the majority of locations lie in areas where there are high rates of Bachelor degrees, showing a potential connection with educational obtainment and dietary trends. Lastly,neighborhoods that have significant proportions of the population living below the poverty line have little or no dropoff sites in operation. Store front and traditional churches have been identified that may act as community sites for the establishment of new CSA locations in these disaffected areas.

본 논문은 철학하기와 춤 만들기가 어떻게 함께 엮이면서, 서로 다른 사람들과 공간들 그리고 시간의 변화 속에서 구체화되는 능동적인 몸 속에서 사고의 움직임으로 드러나는지 탐색한다. 연구자는 서양인인 자신의 통찰력과 기억을 동원하여 자신이 경험해 온 미국 현대와 포스트모던 무용 공동체 속 아이디어와 실천들이 어떻게 철학적 개념들과 다양한 관계를 맺는지 논의한다. 연구자는 20세기에는 무용과 학생으로서 그리고 21세기에는 교사로서 경험한 춤과 철학의 연결고리들을 탐색한다. 또한 앤디 클락의 체현된 의식 개념, 알바 노에의 인지 속 행동, 질 들뢰즈와 펠릭스 가타리의 깨달음의 순간으로서의 연구라는 철학적 아이디어들을 삶 속으로 불러들이는 춤 만들기의 역할에 대해서 논의한다. 진화하는 연구 문제는 다음과 같다: 어떻게 춤이 이 철학들에 생기를 불어넣을 수 있을까? 생각하기와 움직이기에 대한 여러 가지 문화적 방식들 속에서 어떻게 새로운 연결고리들이 생명을 얻는 살아 숨 쉬는 철학을 어떻게 만들 것인가?

Korean Adolescent Leisure, Health and Happines

This paper addresses how sport and leisure can contribute to Korean adolescent health and happiness. We first review adolescent development, and then discuss the health risk behaviors of Korean adolescents. Next we look at leisure, health and wellbeing from an adolescent development perspective. We discuss issues of adolescent autonomy, competence, relationship-building, and motivation. It is clear that across various types of surveys, Korean adolescents report lower levels of happiness and life satisfaction than counterparts in other parts of the world. They also report high levels of risk behavior, including substance misuse, internet addiction, lack of physical activity, and mental health issues. There is less information regarding Korean adolescent leisure. We conclude that from an education perspective, it appears that Korean youth would benefit from a focus on leisure education and prevention. Leisure education seems particularly important to Korean youth given the high rates of passive leisure and low rates of active leisure.
