        The Social Meanings of Urban Landscape Change - A Historical Observation of the Yeonnam-dong District -

        Understanding the identity of an urban space is one of the most important considerations for spatial planners and designers, who are charged with revealing and strengthening the space’s sense of place. However, in many cases, an urban space is regarded merely as a physical form, lacking an interpretation of various semantics, such as its history, political economy, social culture, and art. The purpose of this study is to investigate how an urban space evolves, and thus, how the social images of urban spaces can be recognized with Lefebvre’s theory. Therefore, we examine an urban district to reveal the interaction between societies and spaces through images reflected in news media and public articles, and eventually define the identity of the space. This study takes Yeonnam-dong district as its case, and carefully examines the social relations affecting spatial practices in the area by means of Lefebvre’s spatial triad: representation of space, representational space, and spatial practice. Using historical observation as a research method, we conducted a case review of Yeonnam-dong over 40 years (from 1975 to 2016). The results indicate that there have been complicated power dynamics and struggles to form the current image of Yeonnam-dong, which is still an ongoing process; this exemplifies Lefebvre's notion of the social construction of spaces. The results provide meaningful lessons for planners and designers that they should play important roles as coordinators in radical spatial changes. One of the major limitations of this study is that it does not fully examine the detailed roles of each social entity in the landscape changes, which should be investigated in further studies.

        Productive Landscape as a Tool for Urban Regeneration - The Case of Groot-IJsselmonde, the Netherlands -

        This is a research-based urban design project that explores how a landscape approach could contribute to regenerating a decrepit residential district. The focus is on a post-war housing area in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, called Groot-IJsselmonde. This site is a typical example of a post-war district in the Netherlands, with a layout clearly defined by plenty of green; good infrastructure; and a clear division among living, working, and recreation spaces. This research defines how this restructuring effort has been applied to the post-war neighborhoods in this district and what landscape architecture can contribute to this community’s sustainability. In order to better understand how the design of open spaces can improve community sustainability, this research ponders the following questions: What are the meaning and characteristics of restructuring post-war neighborhoods in the present day? What are the strategies for restructuring these neighborhoods? And what is the new role of landscapes in contemporary cities, especially in post-war neighborhoods? Also, as it is understood that a spatial program is the engine of a project and that urban agriculture has potential as a restructuring tool, in this study “productive landscapes” are employed as a major concept in the design and operationalized in a physical setting. In the end, this research proposes adding a productive function to any unused green areas and meaningless landscapes to help enhance both the economic and social elements of the community. As it is situated in a similar social context to this Dutch case (such as having entered a post-industrial society and regarding apartments as the major housing system), this study is expected to provide useful and practical lessons for current urban regeneration in Korea.

        생태경관에 대한 감상을 향상시키기 위한 조경설계언어

        산업화 시대 이후 공간설계에 있어서 생태적 접근은 지속적으로 주목 받아왔다. 옥외환경디자인의 영역, 특히 조경설 계에 있어서 생태적 설계는 크게 두 가지의 흐름으로 나뉜다고 볼 수 있다. 첫째는 기술적인 측면의 생태설계로서 설계 행위를 통하여 환경의 생태적 건강성을 향상시키는데 집중하는 것을 강조하는 분야이며 둘째는 생태적인 공간을 사회문 화적으로 이해하고 어떻게 대중에게 그 공간의 생태적 가치를 설계라는 매개를 통해 전달할 것인가를 고민하는 분야이 다. 본 연구에서는 후자의 관점에서 조경설계가 공간의 어떤 주제를 어떠한 방법으로 다룰 때 생태적 의미가 더 효과적 으로 전달될 것인가에 대한 고찰을 하였다. 따라서 생태적 조경설계의 여섯 가지 대상을 요약 및 분석하고 그에 따른 설계언어 여섯 가지를 제안하여 논증하였다. 설계주제로는 생태적 기능, 경관의 일시성, 역사성, 시각적 흥미, 안전성, 접근성을 요약하였고 설계언어는 구체적으로 설명, 상징, 대비, 틀, 다양화, 그리고 거리두기를 제안하고 논의하였다. 본 연구의 의미는 산재되어 있는 설계언어를 종합하여 구체적이고 실질적으로 어떻게 생태설계에 응용될 수 있는가에 대하여 제안하고 각 설계언어에 대한 실증적 연구에 기초를 마련하는 데 기여하는 것이다. The ecological approach to environmental design has drawn attention since almost the very beginning of the industrial era. Especially in the field of landscape architecture, this approach can be categorized into two sub - approaches, each reflecting meaning of the terms “environmental” and “ecological”: The first one focuses on technically achieving ecological health in the environment, and is more often recognized as a representative ecological approach; the second one asserts that the designed environment should be more culturally as well as socially appealing, and even informative to the public in the use and representation of its own aesthetic languages. However, there has been little academic endeavor aimed at putting together and operationalizing design languages, about how to compose and arrange design elements, for actual landscape design practice. Therefore, this research aims to reexamine the overall topography of discussions on design languages by means of an extensive literature review and to map out some design subjects and appropriate languages for responding to them, for the benefit of the practice of landscape architecture. To achieve the latter goal, this research defines six landscape design subjects to be dealt with and suggests six design languages to be considered when actually designing landscapes in relation to each of these subjects. The design subjects are ecological functions, temporality, history of place, visual interest, sense of security, and accessibility; and the design languages are articulating, symbolizing, contrasting, framing, diversifying, and distancing. The significance of this research is that it revamps and encapsulates the topic of design subjects, which have become much too spread out to understand, and suggests more practical and more applicable design languages to practitioners.

        최근 다양한 보안 사고들이 발생함에 따라 보안의 중요성이 대두되고 분야를 가리지 않고 일어나는 보안 이슈에 대응하기 위한 개발이 다양화되고 있다. 이 중 블록체인 기반 암호화폐의 일종인 이더리움(Ethereum)의 탈중앙화 어플리케이션(DApp) 시스템이 이슈화되었다. DApp을 이용하여 개발된 취약점 분산 관리 솔루션은 DApp의 기능과 장점을 포함한다. 취약점 분산관리 솔루션은 현 시대의 데이터 관리 구조의 문제점을 해결하기 위한 대책으로 제시되며 필요성을 드러낸다. 또한, 기존의 중앙 집중형 시스템에서 벗어나 솔루션의 이점을 활용하여 사용 영역을 확장할 수 있다.

        Design of a Cooperative Rooftop Garden in a College Campus

        The aim of this project was to present a landscape design proposal for the rooftop terrace of the College of Art and Design building in Kyunghee University. The design is based on the contemporary concept of “coworking” in order to encourage multidisciplinary development of projects among students of different fields within the college. This design suggested an inclusive programming strategy for an inspiring outdoor environment. With the assumption that the successful development of a landscape project relies on the collaboration between nature and humans from different specialties, this design attempted to improve the link described above and to stimulate, through the designed setting, a living environment. The main concept was inspired by the relationship between the common honeybees (Apis mellifera), which represent social insects, and their relation with flowers. The honeycomb- shaped (hexagonal) modular unit enables various forms of the process of collaboration among the students, which provides a sense of place and an aesthetic value to the site as a whole. In addition, the site is composed of three floor levels, which are meant for different functions according to the level of intensity of activity. The first level is divided into two areas, one meant for low intensity activity (secret garden) and the second one meant for medium intensity activity (a space for meeting and conversation). The second level is designated for more diverse activities, and therefore, the intensity of activity would be higher. The third level was planned as a planting experiment zone with a medium level of activity. Considering the intention of the place to improve the physical and mental well-being of students and teachers through physical interaction with nature, this design proposal is expected to inspire other professionals who deal with similar contexts, such as, and in particular, a college environment with diverse disciplines or any type of rooftop garden in an urban context.

        대학촌 옥외환경에 대한 색채 분석 - 경희대학교 국제캠퍼스 일대를 사례로 -

        장소의 정체성은 지역 사회의 활력을 측정하는 가장 영향력 있는 요소 중 하나로 알려져 있다. 하지만 한국의대학촌의 정체성에 대한 비판이 많이 제기되어왔다. 한경관의 색채는 장소의 정체성을 강화하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다고 여겨지는데, 이 연구는 대학촌의 경관색채구조를 조사하고 정체성 발현장치의 일부로서 현재 경관색채의 의미를 분석하는 것을 목표로 하여, 경희대학교국제캠퍼스 일대의 경관색채를 조사하였다. 데이터 수집을 위해 거주자 및 학생과의 인터뷰를 기반으로 주요 보행 경로와 교차로 구성된 사이트에서 대표성을 지니는80장 이상의 사진을 수집하고 분석하였다. 한국 표준 색상 분석 응용 프로그램이 색채를 분석하기 위해 사용되었으며, 사진의 색상 수를 32로 줄인 다음 사진의 표면비율로 상위 10가지 색상을 추출한 다음 IRI 이미지 스케일에 따라 형용사의 의미를 분석하였다. Identity of a place is known to be one of the most influential factors to measure the liveliness of a community. There have been a number of criticisms about lacking identity in campus towns in Korea. Believing that landscape color takes an important role in strengthening the identity of a place, this research aims to investigate the landscape color structure of a campus town and analyze the meanings of current landscape color settings as a part of an identity generator. For data collection, over 80 photographs were taken in the site composed of the main pedestrian paths and nodes based on the interview with residents and students who frequently use the spaces. The Korea Standard Color Analysis application was used in order to analyze the color of the photographs. Having reduced the number of colors in a photograph to 32, top 10 colors in the order of surface proportion in the photograph were extracted, and then the meanings of adjectives were analyzed according to the IRI image scale.

        Semiconducting Polymers with Nanocrystallites Interconnected via Boron-Doped Carbon Nanotubes

        <P>Organic semiconductors are key building blocks for future electronic devices that require unprecedented properties of low-weight, flexibility, and portability. However, the low charge-carrier mobility and undesirable processing conditions limit their compatibility with low-cost, flexible, and printable electronics. Here, we present significantly enhanced field-effect mobility (μ<SUB>FET</SUB>) in semiconducting polymers mixed with boron-doped carbon nanotubes (B-CNTs). In contrast to undoped CNTs, which tend to form undesired aggregates, the B-CNTs exhibit an excellent dispersion in conjugated polymer matrices and improve the charge transport between polymer chains. Consequently, the B-CNT-mixed semiconducting polymers enable the fabrication of high-performance FETs on plastic substrates via a solution process; the μ<SUB>FET</SUB> of the resulting FETs reaches 7.2 cm<SUP>2</SUP> V<SUP>–1</SUP> s<SUP>–1</SUP>, which is the highest value reported for a flexible FET based on a semiconducting polymer.
