In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.

<P>The stress produced by the coupling of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) has been explored extensively, but little is known regarding their roles in the early development of mammalian embryos. Here, we demonstrated that the early development of in vitro-produced (IVP) bovine embryos was governed by the cooperative action between ROS and ER stress. Compared with the tension produced by 5% O2, 20% O2 significantly decreased the blastocyst formation rate and cell survival, which was accompanied by increases in ROS and in levels of sXBP-1 transcript, which is an ER stress indicator. In addition, treatment with glutathione (GSH), a ROS scavenger, decreased ROS levels, which resulted in increased blastocyst formation and cell survival rates. Importantly, levels of sXBP-1 and ER stress-associated transcripts were reduced by GSH treatment in developing bovine embryos. Consistent with this observation, tauroursodeoxycholate (TUDCA), an ER stress inhibitor, improved blastocyst developmental rate, trophectoderm proportion, and cell survival. Moreover, ROS and sXBP-1 transcript levels were markedly decreased by supplementation with TUDCA, suggesting a possible mechanism governing the mutual regulation between ROS and ER stress. Interestingly, knockdown of XBP-1 transcripts resulted in both elevation of ROS and decrease of antioxidant transcripts, which ultimately reduced in vitro developmental competence of bovine embryos. Based on these results, in vitro developmental competence of IVP bovine embryos was highly dependent on the coupled response between oxidative and ER stresses. These results increase our understanding of the mechanism(s) governing early embryonic development and may improve strategies for the generation of IVP embryos with high developmental competence.</P>
Subacute Thyroiditis with Coexisting Papillary Carcinoma

Subacute thyroiditis with coexisting papillary carcinoma is very rare. Here, we report a case of 36-year-old Korean female with both thyroid diseases. She presented with acute onset of anterior neck pain and swelling for 2 weeks. Physical examination, laboratory and image findings suggested subacute thyroiditis. Ultrasonographic examination found a 0.8 cm-sized marked hypoechoic nodule surrounded by multiple irregular hypoechoic lesions and central lymph node metastasis was suspected. Subsequent fine needle aspiration cytology for this nodule showed papillary carcinoma. Two months of oral prednisolone therapy relieved clinical symptoms and normalized her thyroid function. Total thyroidectomy was performed along with central neck dissection and the nodule was confirmed to be papillary carcinoma with one metastatic lymph node among ten dissected nodes, otherwise unremarkable. The other portion of the thyroid showed the typical pathologic features of subacute thyroiditis. Thyroid ultrasonography as an ancillary diagnostic tool in subacute thyroiditis may have clinical implications of finding out hidden malignancy, although the association between two diseases is unclear.
Highly Efficient Organic THz Generator Pumped at Near‐Infrared: Quinolinium Single Crystals

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A novel highly efficient ionic electro‐optic quinolinium single crystals for THz wave applications is reported. Acentric quinolinium derivatives, HMQ‐T (2‐(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxystyryl)‐1‐methylquinolinium 4‐methylbenzenesulfonate) and HMQ‐MBS (2‐(4‐hydroxy‐3‐methoxystyryl)‐1‐methylquinolinium 4‐methoxybenzenesulfonate) exhibit high order parameters cos<SUP>3</SUP><I>θ</I><SUB>p</SUB> = 0.92 and cos<SUP>3</SUP><I>θ</I><SUB>p</SUB> = 1.0, respectively, as well as a large macroscopic optical nonlinearity, which is in the range of the benchmark stilbazolium DAST (<I>N,N</I>‐dimethylamino‐<I>N</I>’‐methylstilbazolium 4‐methylbenzenesulfonate) and phenolic polyene OH1 (2‐(3‐(4‐hydroxystyryl)‐5,5‐dimethylcyclohex‐2‐enylidene)malononitrile) crystals. As‐grown unpolished bulk HMQ‐T crystals with a side length of about 6 mm and thickness of 0.56 mm exhibit 3.1 times higher THz generation efficiency than 0.37 mm thick OH1 crystals and about 8.4 times higher than 1 mm thick inorganic standard ZnTe crystals at the near‐infrared fundamental wavelength of 836 nm. Therefore, HMQ crystals with high order parameter obviously have a very high potential for high power THz‐wave generation and its applications.</P>
국내도로환경을 고려한 LKAS 시험평가 방법에 관한 연구

현대사회의 자동차 산업은 교통사고를 예방하고 운전자의 운전 부담을 줄이기 위해 첨단 운전 보조 장치(ADAS)를 개발 해왔다. ADAS중 차선유지지원장치(LKAS)는 안전과 운전 향상을 위해 차량 시스템을 자동화시키기 위해 개발되었다. LKAS의 주요 역할은 현재 차선 내에서 차량을 유지하는데 있어 운전자를 도와주는 것이다. LKAS는 레이더센서와 카메라센서를 사용하여 차선 내에서 차량의 위치에 대한 정보를 수집하고 필요한 경우 엑츄에이터에 명령을 전송하여 차량의 측면이동에 영향을 미친다. 최근 LKAS가 장착된 차량 일부가 일부 선진국에서 상용화되며 안정성이 증가되었다. 국제적으로 LKAS 평가를 위한 시험절차는 ISO(International Organization for Standardization)와 UNECE(United Nations Economic Commission for Europe)와 같은 국제위원회에서 논의하며 개발중이다. 한국에서는 차량 안전을 위한 LKAS의 평가가 KNCAP(Korean New Car Assessment Program)에 의해 도입될 예정이다. 따라서 국제표준에 부합하는 국내 도로환경에 적합한 LKAS의 시험 절차가 개발되어야한다. 본 논문에서는 국내도로환경에 맞춘 LKAS 시험시나리오 개발 및 목표 상대거리를 구하는 수식을 제안한다. 그리고 제안한 시나리오와 수식을 평가하기 위해 LKAS가 장착된 상용차량을 사용하여 시험평가를 진행하였다. The automobile industry has developed Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADASs) to prevent traffic accidents and reduce the burden for drivers. One example is the Lane Keeping Assistance System (LKAS), which was developed for automotive vehicle systems for safety and better driving. The main system of the LKAS supports the driver while maintaining the vehicle within a lane. LKAS uses a radar sensor and camera sensor to collect information about the vehicle"s position in the lane and send commands to the actuator to influence the lateral movement of the vehicle if necessary. Recently, vehicles equipped with LKAS have become commercially available. Test procedures for international LKAS evaluation are being discussed and developed by international committees, such as the International Organization for Standardization and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. In Korea, an evaluation of LKASs for car safety is being planned by the Korean New Car Assessment Program. Therefore, test procedures should be developed for LKASs that are suitable for the domestic road environment while accommodating international standards. We developed a test scenario for LKASs and propose a formula for obtaining the target relative distance. To validate the methods, a series of experiments were conducted using commercially available vehicles equipped with LKAS.

Objective : Our purpose was to investigate lipid peroxide levels, total peroxyl radical-trapping antioxidative parameter (TRAP) values, and antioxidant vitamin levels in placental tissues of women with preeclampsia and to evaluate their roles in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. Study Design : Samples of placental tissue homogenates were obtained from 23 normal and 18 preeclamptic women between 33 and 40 weeks gestation. TNF-α was assayed by an enzyme-linked immunoassay. Lipid peroxide levels measured by thiobarbituric acid reaction. The TRAP values were measured by modified Wayners method. Ascorbic acid, uric acid, retinol, α-tocopherol, and γ-tocopherol were measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) CoulArray detector. Results : TNF-α levels in placental tissue homogenates of women with preeclampsia were significantly higher than that of women with preeclampsia (21.4±3.39 vs. 10.3±1.06 pg/㎖, p<0.05). Lipid peroxide levels in placental tissue homogenates of women with preeclampsia were significantly higher than that of women with preeclampsia (6.65±0.57 vs. 4.98±0.37 nmol/㎎ protein, p<0.05). TRAP values in placental tissue homogenates of women with preeclampsia were significantly lower than that of women with normal pregnancy (0.24±0.02 vs. 0.31±0.03 mM, p<0.05). Ascorbic acid levels in placental tissue homogenates of women with preeclampsia were significantly lower than that of women with normal pregnancy (217.0±21.0 vs. 333.3±32.8 nmol/㎖, p<0.05). Conclusion : The above results suggest that increased oxidative stress in placenta is involved in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia and ascorbic acid may act as an important preventive factor in the development of preeclampsia.
터보차저 컨트롤 플레이트의 절삭량 최소화를 위한 정형공정

Turbocharger is a device for increasing the power of a vehicle engine. The control plate is the main component for fixing the vane of the turbocharger. Now, the control plate is made of austenite steel cutting after the casting process. It has excellent corrosion, heat resistance and mechanical characteristics of material. However, present the process is made by cutting after casting. when cutting is processed after casting, so materials, processing time, and processing energy are lost. Therefore, this study proposes a process to powder compact use of stainless steel Deklak2 and to minimize amount of cutting through net shape process. The mechanical properties of Deklak2 were verified by tensile test, hardness test and relative density measurement, and the governed equation was defined. Also, the curvature radius 1, 2 and the density, affects the shape, were selected as the design parameters, and the best process conditions was proposed through the Taguchi method and the evaluation of SN ratio. And then prototype molds were fabricated and compared with the results of the finite element analysis for the verification, and it was found that the tendency of relative density and dimension was coincided. Therefore, it was found that the amount of cutting can be minimized by only the net shape process after the sintering process and it can be applied to mass production.
