Matrix Metalloproteinases/Tissue Inhibitors of Metalloproteinases Ratio: A Biomarker of Bone Resorption in Geriatric Osteoporosis?

        Bahar Bektan Kanat,Gulru Ulugerger Avci,Osman Faruk Bayramlar,Damla Unal,Ozge Sonmez,Ibrahim Murat Bolayirli,Alper Doventas,Deniz Suna Erdincler,Hakan Yavuzer 대한노인병학회 2023 Annals of geriatric medicine and research Vol.27 No.2

Background: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play an important role in bone resorption and are regulated by tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). We investigated the use of MMP2/TIMP2 and MMP9/TIMP1 ratios as biomarkers of bone resorption in geriatric osteoporosis and evaluated the relationship between osteoporosis and geriatric syndromes. Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study involved 87 patients (41 with osteoporosis) treated at the geriatric outpatient clinic of a university hospital. The demographic characteristics, comprehensive geriatric assessment scores, laboratory findings, and bone mineral density of the patients were recorded. Serum MMP9, TIMP1, MMP2, and TIMP2 levels were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: We enrolled 41 and 46 patients with and without osteoporosis, respectively. The groups showed no significant differences in MMP2/TIMP2 and MMP9/TIMP1 ratios (p=0.569 and p=0125, respectively). While the basic activities of daily life (BADL) scores in the osteoporosis group were higher than those in the group without osteoporosis, the instrumental activities of daily life (IADL) scores were significantly lower (p=0.001 and p=0.007, respectively). No significant differences were observed in Mini-Nutritional Assessment, Mini-Mental State Examination, and Geriatric Depression Scale scores (p=0.598, p=0.898, and p=0.287, respectively). Conclusion: This is the first study to examine the relationship between osteoporosis and several geriatric syndromes, as well as the relationship between osteoporosis and serum MMP, TIMP values, and MMP/TIMP ratios in geriatric patients. Our results showed that osteoporosis causes dependency in both BADLs and IADLs, and that the MMP2/TIMP2 and MMP9/TIMP1 ratios provided no additional benefit in demonstrating bone resorption in geriatric osteoporosis.

Bahar Gürda,Fatma Öztürk 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2022 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.22 No.2

Traditional knowledge of plants is inter-generationally transferred. It is important to keep proper records in order to avoid the loss of the ethnobotanical heritage. This study is an ethnobotanical survey conducted in Sürmene district in the Black Sea Region of Trabzon-Turkey. The study was conducted between 2018 and 2019. Plants were collected from different altitudes in the district. The required information was collected through ethnobotanical interviews with local people. Use value of species was determined and informant consensus factor was calculated for medicinal plants included in the study. In this study, eighty-two taxa belonging to 42 families were identified. Sixty-six of them are natural, while 16 of them are cultivated plants. One of the species is endemic, Anthemis melanoloma subsp. trapezuntica Grierson. Of the collected plants, 54 taxa are used for medical purposes, 31 is used for food, 17 is used for animal fodder, 16 is used as fuel, 3 is used as honey plant, 2 is used as organic fertilizers, and 16 is used for different purposes. Most of the plants used in the district belong to the families Asteraceae (11 species), Rosaceae (9 species), Lamiaceae (6 species), Poaceae (4 species), and Ericaceae (4 species). Of all the medicinal plants, Citrus sinensis, Actinidia deliciosa, Mentha × piperita, and Thymus nummularius seem are well-known to the locals, as indicated by their high UV. In conclusion, this study collected information regarding the traditional uses of plants in Sürmene district and also helped to preserve the valuable information. Ethnobotanical studies are increasing the possibilities of identifying new molecules; thus, this study may serve as a basis for future pharmacological and phytochemical studies which could lead to the discovery and development of new pharmaceuticals.

A Fuzzy Multi-Objective Linear Programming Model

        Bahar Ozyoruk,Nilay Donmez 대한산업공학회 2014 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.13 No.3

Supply chain management is a subject that has an increasing importance due to the developments in the global markets and technology. In this paper, a fuzzy multi-objective linear programming model is developed for the supply chain of a company dealing with procurement, storage, filling, and distribution of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in Turkey. The model intends to determine the quantities of LPG to be procured, stored, filled to cylinders, and transported between the plants and demand centers for six planning periods. In this model, which aims to minimize both total costs (sum of procurement, storage, filling, and transportation costs) and total transportation distances, demand quantities of the main demand centers and decision maker’s aspiration levels about objective functions are fuzzy. After comparing the results obtained from the model with those obtained by using different methods, it is concluded that the proposed method can be applied to real world problems practically and it may be used in this type of problems in order to generate an efficient solution.

Performance of Structural Lightweight Concrete containing Metakaolin after Elevated Temperature

Bahar Demirel,Ezgi Gultekin,Kursat Esat Alyamac 대한토목학회 2019 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.23 No.7

The aim of the current research is to determine the multiple influences of the amount of metakaolin and high temperature on the compressive strength of structural lightweight concrete (SLWC) applying response surface method (RSM). For this purpose, the lightweight concrete specimens were produced by pumice sand, and metakaolin replacing with cement at different ratios. The unit weight of hardened concrete, 28-day compressive strength, elevated temperature, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and sorptivity tests were performed. Moreover, then, two variables defined as the elevated temperature of 20, 400, 600, and 800 °C, and the metakaolin-tocement ratio of 0%, 5%, 11%, 18%, and 25%, to obtain the compressive strength of structural lightweight concrete. The effects of each variable on the response which is the compressive strength were determined following the ANOVA (analysis of variation) analysis, and the equation of the model was developed. Eventually, the developed equation could be utilized to estimate the compressive strength of the structural lightweight concrete for requested values of each variable.

Disaster Health Literacy of Middle-aged Women

        Bahar Seifi,Ghader Ghanizadeh,Hesam Seyedin 대한폐경학회 2018 대한폐경학회지 Vol.24 No.3

As disasters have been increasing in recent years, disaster health literacy is gaining more important for a population such as middle-age women. This is because they face developmental crises (menopause) and situational crisis (disaster). Due to the growing elderly population, it is imperative to seriously consider the issue of aging women’s healthcare, and their educational needs relative to emergencies and disasters. The purpose of study was to clarify the importance of disaster health literacy for middle-age women. This study is a review of the literature using PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, Google Scholar, SCOPUS, OVID, ProQuest, Springer, and Wiley. Data was collected with keywords related to the research topic (“Women’s health” OR “Geriatric health”) AND (“Health literacy” OR “Disaster health literacy” OR “Disaster prevention literacy” OR “Risk knowledge” OR “Knowledge management”) AND (“Disasters” OR “Risk” OR “Crises”) in combination with the Boolean-operators OR and AND. We reviewed full text English-language articles published November 2011 November 2017. Additional references were identified from reference lists in targeted publications, review articles and books. This review demonstrated that disaster health literacy is critical for elderly women, because they may suffer from physical and psychological problems triggered by developmental crises such as menopause and situational crises such as disasters. Disaster literacy could enable them to improve resiliency and reduce disaster risk. Education has vital role in health promotion of middle-age women. Policymakers and health managers should be aware of the challenges of elderly women as a vulnerable group in disasters and develop plans to incorporate disaster health literacy for preparedness and prevention in educating this group.

Prostaglandins Inhibit Cytochrome P450 4A Activity and Contribute to Endotoxin-Induced Hypotension in Rats via Nitric Oxide Production

        Bahar Tunctan,Fariborz A. Yaghini,Anne Estes,Kafait U. Malik 대한약학회 2008 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.31 No.7

Increased production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandins contribute to development of hypotension during endotoxemia. We have previously demonstrated that endotoxemiainduced increase in NO production suppresses renal cytochrome P450 (CYP) 4A expression and activity, and that selective inhibition of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) with 1,3-PBIT restores renal CYP 4A protein and activity and mean arterial pressure (MAP). By using cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor indomethacin, we investigated herein whether prostaglandins, via NO production, inhibit renal CYP 4A1 protein expression and CYP 4A activity and contribute to the endotoxin-induced hypotension. In conscious male Sprague-Dawley rats, endotoxin (10 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (i.p.)) reduced MAP, increased serum nitrite and bicyclo PGE2 levels, renal nitrite production and iNOS protein expression, and decreased renal CYP 4A1 protein expression and CYP 4A activity after 4 h injection. All of the endotoxin-induced changes, except for increase in renal nitrite production, were prevented by indomethacin (5 mg/kg, i.p. 1 h after endotoxin). The effects of indomethacin on the endotoxin-induced decrease in MAP, CYP 4A1 protein expression and CYP 4A activity were minimized by the CYP 4A inhibitor, aminobenzotriazole (50 mg/kg, i.p. 1 h after endotoxin). These data suggest that prostaglandins produced during endotoxemia increase iNOS protein expression and NO synthesis, and decrease CYP 4A protein expression and CYP 4A activity and that inhibition of iNOS or COX restores renal CYP 4A protein level and CYP 4A activity and MAP presumably due to increased production of arachidonic acid metabolites derived from CYP 4A.
