Purpose: Wheezing following viral lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) in children <2 years of age is an important risk factor for the development of asthma later in life; however, not all children with viral LRTIs develop wheezing. This study investigated risk factors for the development of wheezing during viral LRTIs requiring hospitalization. Methods: The study included 142 children <2 years of age hospitalized for LRTIs with at least one virus identified as the cause and classified them into children diagnosed with LRTIs with wheezing (n=70) and those diagnosed with LRTIs without wheezing (n=72). Results: There were no significant differences in the viruses detected between the two groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that, after adjusting for potentially confounding variables including sex and age, the development of wheezing was strongly associated with parental history of allergic diseases (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 20.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.22–126.48), past history of allergic diseases (aOR, 13.95; 95% CI, 1.34–145.06), past history of hospitalization for respiratory illnesses (aOR, 21.36; 95% CI, 3.77–120.88), exposure to secondhand smoke at home (aOR, 14.45; 95% CI, 4.74–44.07), and total eosinophil count (aOR, 1.01; 95% CI, 1.01–1.02). Conclusion: Past and parental history of allergic diseases, past history of hospitalization for respiratory illnesses, exposure to secondhand smoke at home, and total eosinophil count were closely associated with the development of wheezing in children <2 years of age who required hospitalization for viral LRTIs. Clinicians should take these factors into consideration when treating, counseling, and monitoring young children admitted for viral LRTIs.
Initial Stemness Maintenance of Pig Epiblast Stem Cells (pEpiSCs)

Since embryonic stem cells (ESCs) were first established from explant cultures of in vivo day 3.5 mouse embryos, the establishment of ESCs from species such as primates and rat has been developed. However, this success relies on the development of culture medium suitable for human and rat cells, which has different requirements from the murine ESC. In general, the establishment of ESC from pig and cow is of great interest both the agricultural perspective and for biomedical application. Large animal models, particularly pig, are likely to provide models of human genetic diseases and transplantation research where rodent models are inappropriate. However, establishment of ESCs establishment from pigs has remained an elusive goal. In the present study, we focused on signaling transduction regulation in pig epiblast stem cells (pEpiSCs). Pig epiblasts were isolated from early tubular stage embryos collected in vivo day 10.5~12 after insemination. Epiblasts were separated from trophoblast and underlying primitive endoderm using 21G needles and fine forceps. Epiblasts were cultured on mitomycin C (10 μl/ml) treated mouse embryonic feeder cells in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium (DMEM) containing 1% minimal essential medium (MEM) nonessential amino acids, 1% penicillin/ streptomycin, 1% glutamine, 0.007% β-mercaptoethanol, 5 ng/ml bFGF and 1 ng/ml LIF. After plating rapid differentiation of isolated epiblasts to extraembryonic cell types was visualized in most cultures but stem cells were enclosed by these differentiated cells. We have established seven pig epiblast stem cells lines (pEpiSC1-7) from Days 10.5-12 pig embryos. pEpiSC expressed the pluripotent markers including OCT4, NANOG, SOX2 and NODAL at 3-5 passage. In addition, the modification of culture condition by the inclusion of particular protein kinase inhibitor such as Akt inhibitor, PD0325091(PD), delyed rapid differentiation of pEpiSCs. One Sister and Brother with Mirror Image Myopic Anisometropia

We report a case of one sister and brother with mirror image myopic anisometropia. One sister and brother complained visual disturbance. The sister was 10 years 11 months old, and brother was 8 years 4 months old. Full ophthalmic examinations were performed, including slit lamp examination, intraocular pressure, keratometry, anterior chamber depth, axial length, fundus examination and the cycloplegic refraction. The cycloplegic refractive power was -15.50 dpt cyl.+4.50 dpt Ax 85° (right eye), -1.00 dpt cyl.+0.50 dpt Ax 90° (left eye) in the sister; -1.75 dpt cyl.+2.25 dpt Ax 90° (right eye), -9.50 dpt cyl.+4.00 dpt Ax 80° (left eye) in the brother. The co-occurrence of severe myopic anisometropia in a sister and brother is extremely rare. The present case suggests that severe myopic anisometropia may be related by genetic inheritance.
(TlPbBi)-(SrBa)-Ca-Cu-O superconducting film prepared by electrodeposition process

Superconducting films of (TlPbBi)-(SrBa)-Ca-Cu-O were formed using an electrochemical method. The precursor of the superconducting samples was co-deposited on a silver substrate during a pulsed-potential cycle consisting of 1 s at $-$4 V followed by 1 s at $-$1 V. We employed two-zone furnace technology suitable for the heat-treatment of Tl-based superconductors. The specimens were Tl$_{0.7}$Pb$_{0.3}$Bi$_{0.1}$Sr$_{2.4}$Ba$_{0.2}$Ca$_{1.2}$Cu$_{2.5}$O$_x$ and had a transition temperature of 87 K in low magnetic fields. The critical current density, $J_c$, calculated from the magnetic hysteresis curves by using the Bean model was $\rm{5.3 \times 10^5 A/cm^2}$ at 77 K in zero field. At temperatures above 30 K, the trend of exponential decrease of $J_c(H)$ broke down with increasing field, indicating that the coupling between grains breaks easily at such temperatures as the field was increased.
