Due to its high hardness, chemical and thermal resistance, TiB2has become a great candidate to be used as a protective coating. However, high residual stresses after the deposition and brittleness have become the main obstacles for implementation atindustrial levels. In the present work, the incorporation of graphite was studied as an alternative to improve the performanceof the TiB2coatings and study the influence in the microstructure, Nano mechanical and tribological properties. Ti–B–Ccoatings were deposited with different carbon contents of 10, 20, 28 and 38 at%. XRD results showed that the carbon atomsenter within the crystal lattice of the TiB2forming a solid solution, and consequently, deforming crystal and modifying itslattice parameter of 3.2237–3.3414 Å. HRTEM images and selected area electron diffraction patterns analysis display thelow crystallite or degree of amorphosity due to the carbon concentration (C1.9 mol). Compressive residual stresses decreasein the coatings containing the higher amounts of carbon. The formation of a TiB2-C solid solution contributed to the incrementof nanohardness (H = 25 GPa) and improvement of the resistance to plastic deformation (H3/E2) of coatings. Regardingthe tribological behaviour of the coatings, higher friction coefficient than those obtained on the uncoated substrate wereobserved. However, a reduction of the wear rate was also evident. The presence of a high amount of debris and severe wearof the counterpart material indicates a highly aggressive tribological contact. Roll-like debris with a shape of needles wasfound within the tribological tracks perpendicular to the sliding direction.

This article analyzes the last nine years of Mexico's foreign policy including the government of Felipe Calderon Hinojosa and the first half of Enrique Peña Nieto. During that period they can be studied comparatively aspects of continuity and change, as well as internal factors (social violence, legitimacy and fight against organized crime) which have been included in the design of international strategies and margins of maneuver both governments in the international arena. El presente artículo analiza los últimos nueve años de la política exterior de México que incluye el gobierno de Felipe Calderón Hinojosa y la primera mitad de Enrique Peña Nieto. Durante ese periodo pueden ser estudiados de manera comparativa los aspectos de continuidad y cambio, así como los factores internos (violencia social, legitimidad y lucha contra el crimen organizado) que han influido en el diseño de las estrategias internacionales y en los márgenes de maniobra de ambos gobiernos en el ámbito internacional

This study was performed to investigate the effect of Agave tequilana Weber inulin on postprandial ghrelin levels in obese patients. A randomized, double-blind, cross-over design was performed. A total of 14 patients were allocated into two groups: one group received a drink that contained 500 mL lemon water, 24 g of A. tequilana Weber inulin, and 75 g glucose and the other group received a placebo drink with 500 mL lemon drink and 75 g of glucose. After a 7-day washout period, the groups were crossed. The primary outcome measure was postprandial ghrelin levels between minute 240 and minute 270. A. tequilana Weber inulin did not change postprandial ghrelin concentration in obese patients.

The effect of synthesis parameters on the production of titania nanostructured spherical aggregates

Anatase submicrometre nanostructured spherical aggregates have been obtained with a sol-gel synthesis assisted by Tween-20 as a surfactant. A low hydrolysis rate in room conditions and calcination at low temperatures were employed. Effective photocatalytic activities of up to 73% were obtained in the photodegradation of the methylene blue reaction. The effect of the synthesis parameters on the sizes of the spherical agglomerates obtained and on the crystallite size were evaluated; these parameters were the surfactant content, the molar concentration of the precursor titanium butoxide, and their relative ratios. The crystallite size had the main effect of obtaining good photocatalytic behavior, with a linear dependence on the photocatalytic activities. The morphology and anatase structure were determined by transmission electron microscopy. Use of the proposed synthesis made it possible to obtain only the anatase phase with small crystal sizes.

True aneurysmal disease in the carotid arteries is very uncommon, but individuals with this pathology face the grave risk of thromboembolism, which may consequently lead to cerebrovascular accidents. Clinical knowledge remains relatively limited owing to its rarity. We present the case of a 41-year-old obese female with a type II right extracranial internal carotid artery aneurysm incidentally found during imaging work-up. She underwent open surgical reconstruction with an autologous interposition graft from the common carotid artery to the internal carotid artery at the base level of the skull. Her postoperative period was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on postoperative day five with aspirin. At 12 months of follow-up, the patient remained symptom-free without complications.

Bifidobacterial proteins have been widely studiedto elucidate the metabolic mechanisms of diet adaptationand survival of Bifidobacteria, among others. The use ofheterologous expression systems to obtain proteins in sufficientquantities to be characterized has been essential inthese studies. L. lactis and the same Bifidobacterium asexpression systems highlight ways to corroborate some ofthe functions attributed to these proteins. The most studiedproteins are enzymes related to carbohydrate metabolism,particularly glycosidases, due to their potential applicationin the synthesis of neoglycoconjugates, prebioticneooligosaccharides, and active metabolites as well as theirhigh specificity and efficiency in processing glycoconjugates. In this review, we classified the recombinant bifidobacterialproteins reported to date whose characterizationhas demonstrated their usefulness or their ability to producea product of commercial interest for the food industry,biomedicine, process innovation and glycobiology. Futuredirections for their study are also discussed.

Estuaries are highly diverse ecosystems that occur at the interface between land and sea and thus possess a high degree of environmental variation over short spatial and temporal scales. The Gulf of Urabá (1800 km 2; mean depth ~ 40 m) is a semiclosed estuarine area located in the southwestern part of the Caribbean Sea (South America). This large coastal–estuarine ecosystem operates as a biogeochemical reactor due to it featuring examples of high nutrient concentrations on the surface (NO 3- = 1619 μM; NO 2- = 0.505 μM; NH 4+ = 2.938 μM; PO 4 3- = 7.603 μM), high Chl α (max = 30.17; min = 0.02; mean = 9 mg m−3), as well as blooms of toxic algae, mostly Pseudo-nitzschia pseudodelicatissima. An outbreak of Tripos fusus causes bioluminescence and about 20 events of hypoxia (< 2–4 mg O 2 L−1) within a time series of 10 years. Despite this, information regarding the biological and biogeochemical oceanography (chlorophyll α, biomass, planktonic composition, nutrient cycling, mass balance of elements, and interannual variability) remains non-existent. Therefore, elucidating an ecosystem’s thresholds for various features is necessary for managing marine ecosystems, and especially for climate change projections. We here present a review of the functioning of this estuary, evaluating and reviewing each aspect of oceanographic variability.

<B>Abstract</B><P>The response of <I>Grapholita molesta</I> (Busck) males to three-component sex pheromone blends containing a 100% ratio of the major sex pheromone component, (<I>Z</I>)-8-dodecenyl acetate and a 10% ratio of (<I>Z</I>)-8-dodecenol, but with varying ratios of (<I>E</I>)-8-dodecenyl acetate (0.4, 5.4, 10.4, 30.4, and 100.1% <I>E</I>-blends) was tested with populations in eight stone and pome fruit orchards in Europe, Asia, and North and South America. Traps baited with the 5.4% <I>E</I>-blend caught significantly more males than traps with any other blend with all populations. Significantly more males were caught in traps baited with the 10.4% <I>E</I>-blend than in traps with the remaining blends, except with the 0.4% <I>E-</I>blend in Turkey. Significant differences in male moth catches occurred between the other blends with the 0.4>30.4% <I>E-</I>blend, and the 30.4>100.1% <I>E-</I>blend. Male moth catches with the 100.1% <I>E</I>-blend only differed from the hexane control in Chile. No apparent differences were noted to these blends in populations collected from pome or stone fruits. Flight tunnel assays to synthetic blends with a subset of populations were similar to the field results, but the breadth of the most attractive <I>E-</I>blends was wider. Flight tunnel assays also demonstrated a high level of male-female cross-attraction among field-collected populations. Female gland extracts from field-collected populations did not show any significant variation in their three-component blends. The only exceptions in these assays were that long-term laboratory populations were less responsive and attractive, and produced different blend ratios of the two minor components than recently collected field populations.</P>
