필자는 장용학 전기소설에 비해 연구가 미미한 실정인 후기소설에 대한 주제의식과 후기소설 연구와 같은 상황인 에세이를 천착함으로써, 장용학이 교육자이면서 한때 언론인으로서 비평적 태도를 보여준 지성적인 작가임을 다시 한 번 인식할 수 있었다. 후기소설 주제의식에 연계된 장용학 에세이 가운데 본고에서 구체적으로 살펴본 것만 간추려보면 다음과 같다. 근대화로 인한 소외양상을 보여준 에세이에서는 善, 自由, 그리고 現代人에 대한 장용학의 소견과 자본주의 사회와 근대화의 병폐를 논하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 앞의 주제의식에 연계된 또다른 에세이로는 도시계획을 강행하는 서울시장을 비판하고 있다. 독재정권의 고발을 보여준 장용학의 에세이로는 박정희의 장기집권을 위한 대통령선거 여부에 대한국민투표 자체를 비판하고 있다. 왜곡된 일본사를 비판한 장용학의 에세이로는 일본인의 통념을 비판하고 있는 글이 있다. 이상으로 장용학 후기소설에 나타난 주제의식에 연계된 에세이 고찰은 장용학 전기소설을 중심으로 한 기존의 연구에서 벗어나 장용학 연구에 있어 총체적으로 다가갈 수 있는 기틀을 마련할 수 있으리라고 생각한다. Until recently, studying the later works of Yong-hak Jang was considered immaterial when compared to studying his earlier ones. A study of the author’s essay was also considered immaterial . This thesis is a review of a study on subject consciousness in the later works of Yong-hak Jang and its affiliated essay. This study, however, helped us re-identify Yong-hak Jang for his intelligence and critical temper in his capacity as author, educator, and journalist. We closely examined a part of the affiliated essay on subject consciousness seen in the later works of Yong-hak Jang. These essays reveal his critical bent of mind toward modernization, especially his views regarding the alienation of people from one another caused by modernization. His essay looks at not only the positive aspect of freedom and of modernization, but also at his opinion of the twofold capitalist society that emerged as a result of the so-called modernization. His essay is a reflection of his opinion about the city planning enforcement of a Seoul mayor. The essay criticizes the dictatorship of the government. In the essay, he emphasizes the role of the plebiscite in long-term seizure of power from the Revitalizing Reforms system under the dictatorship of the government of Jeong-hee, Park. In the same critical fashion, his essay mentions the distortion of history introduced by Japan and his opinions about Japanese conventions . To conclude, the study on subject consciousness in the later works of Yong-hak Jang and its affiliated essay will provide a foundation for a general study of the literature world created by Yong-hak Jang.

본 연구자는 장용학의 특성과 한계를 동시에 살펴볼 수 있는 장용학 에세이에 관한 연구가 총체적인 장용학 연구에 있어 하나의 작업으로 중요한 의미를 지닌다고 생각한다. 비판적 성향과 함께 때로는 인간적 체취를 느낄 수 있는 장용학 에세이를 모색하는 것은 시대와 현실을 직시한 장용학의 세계관을 파악하는 중요한 단서가 될 것이다. 이에 본 연구자는 사회적 지성과 역사적 양심의 소재들을 담고 있는 장용학 에세이를 보다 면밀하게 살펴봄으로써 장용학 세계관의 새로운 해석의 토대를 마련하고자 한다. 장용학 에세이는 인생 전반에 걸친 교양 · 체험 등에 의한 소규모의 自己顯示이면서, 비평적 지식인으로서의 그가 택한 윤리적 선택의 방향을 우리에게 알려준다. 그의 에세이를 통해 구현된 메시지가 민중의 애환과 사회구조적 모순의 실상을 보여준다는 점에서, 장용학 에세이는 정치적일 수밖에 없다. 또한 장용학 에세이는 현실의 특수한 성격을 드러내고 있으며, 이에 따른 비판의식은 독자를 자각한다. 본 연구에서는 장용학 소설의 주제와 관련시킨 에세이와 장용학 소설이 추구하는 주제밖에 산재하고 있는 인생과 세속의 현상들을 대상으로 한 에세이로 구분한다. 이러한 에세이에 관한 연구를 통해 본 장용학은 주체 의식과 역사적 양심을 지니고 있으며, 사회적 지성과 현실 비판을 갖춘 사람이라 말할 수 있을 것이다. 반면에 독선적인 자기해석의 한계를 보여준 장용학의 어느 에세이를 통해서도 알 수 있듯이, 그의 기질이 때로는 我執에 가까움을 알 수 있다. 그럼에도 그의 본질은 인간의 惡이 아닌 善에 근거하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 다시 말해서 장용학 에세이에 전반적으로 나타나듯이, 그의 자존심이자 筆力의 지향점은 ‘正義’를 축으로 한 道德性(人間性)에 있다고 본다. This study examines the characteristics and limitations of Yonghak Jang on the basis of his essay. This study is important as it is one of the few comprehensive studies of Yong-hak Jang. Yong-hak Jang’s essay can sometimes sense human body odor with a critical inclination. This essay serves as an important clue to understanding the world view Yong-hak Jang adopts to face the prevailing times and its realities. Therefore, this study closely examines Yonghak Jang’s essay, which contains themes of social intelligence and historical conscience. Yong-hak Jang’s essay depicts a small, self-present moment by way of its culture and experience throughout life. It reveals people’s joys and sorrows as well as the structural contradictions of society. Thus, this essay is political. Yong-hak Jang’s essay reveals the special character of reality, and his critical mind recognizes the reader. In this study, we divide the essay in terms of it either being related to the subject of Yong-hak Jang’s novel, or not being relevant to the subject of the novel. Yong-hak Jang is the owner of a sense of identity and historical conscience. He is a person of social intelligence and practical criticism. On the other hand, his singular personality shows the limits of his self-righteous self-interpretation. Nevertheless, the essence of his being is steeped in good rather than evil; in other words, Yong-hak Jang’s essay is based on the issue of morality (humanity) in pursuit of justice.
