The epidemiologic study on atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases of Korean is still scanty. Recently only one autopsy study on atherosclerosis of aorta in Korean was reported by Dr. Kim and there are a few reports of clinical incidence of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris or cerebrovascular disease among hospital patients. Author studied on the incidence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerotic findings proved by electrocardiogram or chest X-ray among 12,375 patients of Woo Sok University Hospital and Seoul Sanitarium Hospital for the last 5 years from Jan. 1961 to Aug. 1965. for an epidemiologic study of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in Korea. The following diseases were included to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in this study, namely myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, heart failure due to atherosclerotic heart disease, atherosclerosis obliterans, cerebral thrombosis and cerebral hemorrhage which was not due to aneurysm or congenital vascular malformations. The calcification of the aortic knob and descending aorta were considered to be an evidence of atherosclerosis of the aorta. The following results were obtained: 1. There were 258 cases of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (2.1%) among the total 12, 375 patients of Medical Department in Woo Sok University Hospital. The incidence in male was 2.6% and 1.6% in female. 2. Among the 258 cases of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, there were 50 cases of myocardial infarction (0.4%), 13 cases of angina pectoris (0. 123 cases of heart failure due to atherosclerotic heart disease (0.18%), 123 cases of cerebral hemorrhage (0.99%), 47 cases of cerebral thrombosis (0.42%), and only 2 cases of atherosclerosis obliterans. 3. Among 3,952 cases of electrocardiograms examined in Woo Sok University Hospital and Seoul Sanitarium Hospital, there were 75 cases of myocardial infarction (1.80%) and 50 cases were male and 25 cases were female. There were 3 cases of male and 1 case of female who were under 40 year of age among these patients. 4. Among the random chest X-ray films of total 7, 110 cases which were examined in Radiology Department, there were 126 cases of calcification of aortic knob or descending aorta (1.8%). 5. The atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease occured after age of 30 year and gradually increased the incidence. Particularly age after 60 year, the incidence raised markedly. 6. The total serum cholesterol were measured in 191 cases of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and there were 99 cases (51.8%) of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease whose serum total cholesterol levels were more than 200㎎%.
