The structural analysis of a reactor coolant pump(RCP) of a nuclear power plant is very important for the safety assessment of the plant. Accurate boundary conditions for the heat transfer coefficient are required for reliable thermal stress analysis of the pump casing, especially in transient operations of the pump since the coolant properties are largely dependent on operational conditions. In the present study, a 3D mixed flow type coolant pump was modeled from the RCP drawings and analyzed in the steady state and number of transient flow conditions by using a commercial code STAR-CD. From the result of the computation, it is seen that the average heat transfer coefficients for the cases considered are found to be the suggested values of the manufacturer, Westinghouse Energy System. The unevenness in local heat transfer coefficients, however, is found to be considerable so that the use of average heat transfer coefficients in all boundaries might not give reliable thermal stress predictions.

A coast down test mothod has been used to determine the resistance forces on running vehicle due to the aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance and driveline resistance. Most of the tests, however, are based on the Velocity-Time measurements, which require a sophisticated velocity measuring device and contain much error by nature. In the present study a coast down test method based on Distance-Time measurements is introduced, which contains the original idea of Russian scientist Prof. Petrushov along with the suggestions for improvement of the accuracy.

In the companion paper of the present paper, a coast down test method to determine the resistance forces on running vehicle based on the distance-time measurement was explained along with the suggestions to improve its accuracy and testing methodology. In the present paper some of the suggestions discussed previously are implemented and actually road tested to see the applicability of the improved method(short distance method) in the field. From the results. it is shown that the short distance method which requires only 600m long proving ground road gives at least comparable results on the accuracy compared to the original S-t method which requires 2000m. It is hoped that the present method be further refiend to give more accurate results.

Row fields in model engine cooling passages are studied numerically by using TURBO-3D program, a finite volume based 3-D turbulent flow program adopting a general body fitted coordinate system. The effects of exit position on mass flow rate at each gasket hole are examined for a model cooling passage in order to understand the flow distribution inside the water jacket. The results of the present study can be applied to the design of high performance, high reliability engine.

Flows inside a passenger compartment of a 1/5 scale model vehicle have been simulated by using a general purpose FVM code, TURBO-3D. Three HV AC modes of heating, air-conditioning, and defrosting are simulated by defining three different inlets. Comparisons are made with the published experimental and computational results, giving a good agreement A method of predicting the defrosting contours on the wind shield is also proposed in the present study, which enables design modifications in design stages.<br/>

A numerical procedure for the calculation of solidification and melting phase change using PISO algorithm is presented. In case of phase change problem, the coupling between elocity/pressure/temperature and liquid fraction is important. The converged temperature and liquid fraction solution which satisfies the energy balance is acquired by applying enthalpy method into inner iteration in matrix solver. And a modified PISO algorithm version is introduced to properly solve the coupling between velocity/pressure/temperature and liquid fraction. A comparison of the proposed procedure with a standard iterative method shows improvement both in terms of computing speed and robustness.
