Lymphangioma is a rare benign congenital tumor involving both the head and the neck and causing obstructing symptoms in the upper airways as well as aesthetic anomalies. About 90% of the cases occur within 2 years of age, except for a few cases, which occur in adulthood. The lesions can grow rapidly with infection, truma or bleeding, resulting in disfigurement as well as severe impairment of respiraton, swallowing and speech. The middle ear lymphangioma is very extreme. There have been no previously reported cases of middle ear lymphangioma in Korea. The treatment of choice for lymphangioma located in the middle ear is surgical excision. We present and discuss this rare case with a review of the literature. Background: During pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) implantation, inaccurate measurements of hemodynamic parameters due to infection or thrombosis of PAC can result in severe complications. Method: In order to develop a new PAC material, we evaluated the antibacterial and antithrombotic activities of the two types of PAC (Swan Ganz catheter and prototype catheter) in 14 pigs. Results: In the 3-day group, bacterial infection rate was not different between the two types of PAC. In the 7-day group, bacterial infection rate of the prototype catheter was twice as elevated as that of the Swan-Ganz catheter. In the 3-day group, thrombus formation rate of the prototype catheter was twice as elevated as that of the Swan-Ganz catheter. In the 7-day group, thrombus formation rate was the same for the two types of PAC. Conclusion: Here, we report an experimental pig model that confirms differences in antibacterial and antithrombotic activities.

The congenital absence of major salivary glands is an extremely rare disorder. The cause of congenital absence of the salivary glands has not been determined, but it may be associated with ectodermal defects of the first and second branchial arches. The etiopathogenesis of isolated absence of a major salivary gland without other developmental anomalies is still unclear. Unilateral aplasia of the submanibular gland with sialolithiasis of contralateral wharton’s duct has not been reported previously. The authors report with relative literature one case of Unilateral aplasia of the submanibular gland with sialolithiasis of contralateral Wharton’s duct. (J Clinical Otolaryngol 2010;21:279-282)

Nasal septal abscess is defined as a collection of pus between the cartilage or bony septum and overlying mucoperichondrium or mucoperiostium. In general, most septal abscess is associated with nasal truma, or occur as a post-operative complication. Atraumatic nasal septal abscess secondary to fungal sinusitis is an extremely rare occurance and those are commonly associated with poor immunity. Also abscess of the posterior nasal septum is extremely rare. Untreated posterior septal abscess, although unlikely to result in nasal deformity (the cartilaginous septum remaining unaffected), can result in intracranial complication. We present a case of a bilateral posterior nasal septal abscess with coexisting fungal sinusitis, in a healthy adult.

Blow out fractures occur in many patients who suffer from blunt trauma in the face. The typical signs and symptoms are diplopia, limited eye movement and enophthalmos. Upper eyelid ptosis is a relatively rare symptom caused by blowout fracture, where traumatic ptosis accounts for only 1-9%. The etiology is usually the result of a direct levator muscle injury due to eyelid trauma. Sometimes traumatic blepharoptosis occurs due to ischemic damage to the superior branch of the oculomotor nerve. Generally, blepharoptosis caused by blow out fracture is treated with conservative treatment unless there is some evidence of bone impingement. The authors report one case of blepharoptosis caused by blow out fracture, which was treated successfully.

Osseous choristoma is an extremely rare lesion of the oral cavity. It occurs usually in the tongue and exclusively in the flat bones of the skull. It is asymptomatic and only present when there is a disruption in the function of the organ due to its large size as it grows. A 61-year-old female was referred From neurologic department to ENT clinic because of tongue mass found accidentally. We tried surgical excision and the histopathologic report was osseous choristoma. So We report a case of osseous choriostoma with review of the literature.

Post-obstructive pulmonary edema (POPE) is an uncommon complication which develops immediately after the onset of acute airway obstruction or after the relief of chronic upper airway obstruction. Otolaryngologist frequently handles the upper airway, so the full knowledge about the mechanism and treatment of POPE for them is very important. We encountered a 33-years-old man with POPE after operation for obstructive sleep apnea and report this case with a review of the related literatures.
