Vol.29 No.1

This paper aims to examine how William Wordsworth, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Charles Dickens present cities in their works. It argues that the writers criticized their city-based contemporary civilization and searched for community values to sustain human unity in an industrial society. The three writers, this paper suggests, evaluated the city-based civilization with their shaping vision and thereby guide us into a direction that the restoration of human unity depends on how an ideal community is planted in a city. William Wordsworth sees London as a capitalistic city which commodifies human dwellers. What Wordsworth discovers in London is the world of a phantasm which alienates its dwellers. It not only signals the emergence of a new civilization. It also indicates the impoverishment of rural communities and the loss of self-identity. Wordsworth pays much attention to the country life for an alternative community, but his preference for that community results from his desire for internalizing socio-political conflicts in the city. In The Blithedale Romance, Hawthorne makes an experiment on a new mode of life, which supposedly substitutes for the industrialism-oriented city life. The experiment fails, however, for the characters' ego-centric desires conflict with one another and the realistic or outer conditions of life interfere with the actual life of the community. The failure of the experimental life is interconnected with Hawthorne's essential skepticism permeating his world view, rather than he could not foresee industrial depredation. Anyway, Hawthorne does not intend to continue his experiment in his contemporary city life although his experimental spirit is influential enough to form the view of nature of later thinkers and writers. Dickens created the Victorian London that we know today. Through his imaginative work, we clearly understand how deeply the newly-emerging industrial society affected people and changed human life in general. The city-dwellers of all social classes were living their lives as if, both literally and figuratively, “living in death.” Dickens seeks for a fundamental solution to the problems within the city and suggests that we should restore the warmth of home and familial relationships to society as well as to individuals. < Chungnam·Chodang·Chungnam National University >

Vol.28 No.2

As the globalisation of corporate’s managemental environment, all parts of logistics such as procurement, production and sales are globalized. The ways of transportation in Korea and Japan, where are difficult to use land-transportation, are sea-transportation and air-transportation. Sea & air is a way of the international transportation which is combined by Sea and Air to reduce the transportation fee and shorten the delivery time. The main body of multimodal transportation service is the corporate, actual carrier who undertakes the actual transport. It is essential to establish service quality to maintain their going concern. In other words, the actual carrier has to emphasize the importance of service quality to forwarder tan any other business conditions. In this study, we examine the determinants of service quality for actual carrier in multimodal transportation. Through the multi-regression analysis based on SERVPERF by Cronin and Taylor (1992), we analyze the service quality dimensions of actual carrier. Also we examine the relations between the determinants and customer’s satisfaction. Using statistical hypothesis testing, the determinants of service quality are reliability, responsiveness, assurance, tangibles, and we could look into the factors which the actual carrier should control with priority.

Vol.38 No.2

This paper explores that Romantic concerns with nature appeared with broad interests in contemporary natural history and wants to show that Romantic poets could not be free from such circumstances. It also attempts to prove that Romantic ecocriticism originated from Romantic natural history. Romantic natural history showed a paradigm shift from the Classical age. It included various life and earth sciences and opened up "a new field visibility." The natural environment and its entities became the main subject for diverse discursive practices. Romantic natural history emerged as the dominant science of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by colonial expansion. It made the colonial world and its natures the objects for its insightful exploration. What Romantics found through natural history practices is the biological interaction of all living things toward an organic whole. William Blake`s "The Tyger" and "A Poison Tree" imply that the poet knew what natural history found. He stressed in the poems the interconnectedness of natural objects and their balance with humankind. Percy Shelley`s "The Sensitive Plant" and "Ode to the West Wind" showed that he was familiar with the contemporary natural history. The poems emphasized an organic model of animal species and plants, suggesting the correspondence between humans and the natural world.

Vol.25 No.4

The EU, which recently became Korea’s second biggest trading partner, maintains the world’s highest standards for environmental protection. The EU demands that imported products also satisfy these standards - including REACH, a regulation on chemicals and EURO-2-6, a regulation on automobile emissions. These standards have had a great influence on a major export industry in Korea, the automobile industry. This study suggests effective countermeasures for Korean industries by examining Korea’s environmental regulations for a major export item, automobiles. Examples of such countermeasures include the development of environment friendly auto engines, expansion of environment-friendly projects, development of green energy automobiles, environment related regulations and trade policies, establishment of an environment information system, and the expansion of the environment related market. The most important issue is the establishment of strategies through cooperation between the government and private companies.

Vol.14 No.2

This paper explores how Seamus Heaney can be read from an ecocritical perspective, and it also points out that such an ecocritical reading would be problematic. Terry Gifford and Greg Garrard have already posited Heaney as an ecological poet from their own respective critical view. Gifford stresses that Heaney constructs the unity with the natural world, while Garrard maintains that the poet’s representation depends on the poetics of dwelling. Seamus Heaney presents his belief in the unity with the natural world. Some of his poems focus on the places familiar to his earlier days. The poet finds the interconnection between his use of language and the natural landscape by paying attention to the naming of the places. Heaney also describes the poetics of how to dwell. He equates his bog land with Ireland, and thereby the poet discovers that the history of nature cannot be separated from that of culture, reminding the reader of the bloody history of the Nothern Ireland retrieved from his archaeological imagination. Heaney could be evaluated as an ecological poet, but his seemingly ecological poetics has an problematic in that it tends to mystify the natural landscape and displaces it with a “lyric job” in which the inhuman is repeatedly effaced.

Vol.15 No.2

This paper explores how Linda Hogan’s The Book of Medicines presents what Gregory Bateson called “an Ecology of Mind,” which identifies the unit of evolutionary survival with the unit of mind. Hogan sees human beings and animals in an collaborative evolution and describes the history of native American people along with the passage of evolutionary time. She uses the metaphor of hunger to represent their hard times in history and yearns for the time of origins by tracking down the history of their biological evolution. For the poet, transformation is the oldest ceremonial theme that connects humans with the natural world. It reveals that human language functions as a restraining violence to the biosphere and thereby separates humans from the natural world. As a caretaker to protect and to nurse the threatened natural world, Hogan leads readers to the place of mythical time where they can capture a yearning to experience bodily ties to nature. Linda Hogan’s ecology of mind achieves an ecological wisdom that is regarded as a communal spirit to guard the natural world as well as to heal the human world threatened by discrimination and violence.
