The aim of this work was to enhance the water vapor permeability of bio-polyurethane thin film, whose essential application is as a non-microporous type of film in breathable fabrics, by hybridizing it with nano- and micro-sized titania ($TiO_2$). The bio-polyurethanes were synthesized from 4,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and a polyol mixture containing polyethylene glycol (PEG) and soybean oil-based polyol, that is, bio-glycols by the hydroxylation of soybean oils upto 25% by weight of bio-polyurethane. We studied the effect of hybridizing the bio-polyurethane films with hydrophilic nano- or micro-sized $TiO_2$ on their breathability by measuring the water contact angle and the water vapor permeability of the films; it was found to significantly enhance the permeability of the bio-polyurethane film. Further, nano-$TiO_2$ was more effective than micro-$TiO_2$ due to the higher surface area resulting from nano particles. On the other hand, it is expected that it would be possible to provide additive functionality to the bio-PU membranes due to photocatalytic effect of nano-$TiO_2$.

In order to assess the histopathology of the liver disease in potential candidates for renal transplantation, percutaneous liver biopsies were performed in 35 patients with endmtage renal failure before transplantation. Indications for liver biopsy were presence of HBsAg in 20(57%) cases, abnormal liver ehemistries in 8(23%), positive anti HCV antibody in 6(17 % ) cases, and abnormal ultrasonographic finding of the liver in one(3% ) case. Several histopathologic patterns were found in 35 liver samples.' chronic persistent hepatitis 11(31%), normal histology 9(26%), hemosiderosis 7(20), chronic active hepatitis 3(9 %), nonmpecific reactive hepatitis 2(6%), and others 3(9%). Histologic diagnosis of 20 patients with HBsAg were chronic persistent hepatitis in 8 cases, normal histology in 7 cases, nonspecific reactive hepatitis 2 cases, chronic active hepatitis in 2 cases, and others in 3 cases. Histologic diagnosis of six patients with anti HCV antibody were chronic persistent hepatitis in 3 cases, chronic active hepatitis in 2 cases and hemosiderosis in one case. Hepatic outcome according to histologic diagnosis in 20 patients who underwent renal transplantation was vsriable. Follow up ranges from 12 to 86 months, one patient developed cirrhosis and died of sepsis, one developed superinfection with HBV and HCV and one patient who had a chronic persistent hepatitis at the time of transplantation developed chronic active hepatitis 6 months after transplantation. We recommend performing liver biopsy in patients who have postive serology for HBV or HCV and abnormal liver function tests to accurately evaluate the degree of hepatic damage in potential candidates for renal transplantation.
