For more than 100 years, the mankind has been erecting tall buildings as symbols of modern cities and to serve as a universal form of urban dwelling. Now is the time to redefine the meaning and value of tall buildings in our modern society by highlighting the green, safety, and humanity aspects of tall buildings intended to better-serve the mankind. Only a decade has passed since we welcomed the 21st Century, but the mankind has already seen more than its fair share of political, economical,and social confrontations and clashes. Accordingly, the world of technology and construction of tall buildings is going to face greater problems and challenges. High-rises must contribute to the protection of endangered environment, and pursuing advancement of technology is the only way to silence the safety concerns that have plagued the industry from its inception. The design of high-rise building needs a spacial approach to form, space, vertical movement, construction and etc comparing with low-rise buildings. The target of the study is to understand a situation of tall residential building's facade design application according the past and now. It is very important work to know what design issues are applied for tall residential building's facade design by the times. For get the target of the study, this study starts with a research of a definition of general facade design and tall residential building facade design and then analyses of existing tall residential buildings by survey. It will give a chance to inform design methodology for high-rise residential building's facade design before starting initial facade design.

The high-use living style is one of the symbols of city-life pattern in our modern society Living style in Seoul has been changed rapidly from low-rise to high-rise during the last several decades of industrialization with national issues for economy and other social changes with globalization and rapid westernizaiton in life style The Seoul has experienced serious housing problems with excessive rural-to-urban migration It quantitatively resulted rapid housing demands in limited land resources and inevitably resulted multi-story residence development. This habitat called apartment has become typical living quarter of city life based on modern society with globalization and westernization This pattern seems to be a way to solve the quantitative problem, but it brought another problem such as uniform visual environment with similar building height and form Turning into the 21st century, such a mechanism becomes no longer effective and there are demands for the diversification of residential style and amenity of urban housing. The high-rise residence has been lead with residential complex and height competitions in Seoul This paper has focused on the comparative analysis of residential developments to obtain architectural design characteristics of high-rise residential patterns in relation to the user's evaluation for developing the adequacy of living quality It will be chance to understand developed design patterns of multi-story residential buildings with the changes of the times in Seoul
