A Reciprocity-Based Formula for the Capacitance with Quadrupolar Electrodes

A new capacitance formula for the practical design and characterization of quadrupolar electrode arrays with capacitive structures was derived, based on the reciprocal theorem. The reciprocity-based capacitance formula agreed with the empirical equations established to estimate the capacitance of a single strip line or disk electrode compensating the fringing field effect, which occurs at the electrode edge. The reciprocity-based formula was applied to compute the capacitance measurable by the quadrupolar square electrode array with the symmetric dipole-dipole configuration, and compared with the analytical equation established based on the image method assuming that the electrodes are points. The results showed that the capacitance of the quadrupolar electrodes is determined by the relative size of the quadrupolar electrodes to the separation distance between the electrodes, and that the reciprocity-based capacitance formula is in agreement with the established analytical equation if the relative separated distance between the electrodes to the electrode size is large enough.

- One of the important roles of a DNA chip is the capability of detecting genetic diseases and mutations by analyzing DNA sequence. For a successful electrochemical genotyping, several aspects should be considered including the chemical treatment of electrode surface, DNA immobilization on electrode, hybridization, choice of an intercalator to be selectively bound to double standed DNA, and an equipment for detecting and analyzing the output signal. Au was used as the electrode material, 2-mercaptoethanol was used for linking DNA to Au electrode, and methylene blue was used as an indicator that can be bound to a double stranded DNA selectively. From the analysis of reductive current of this indicator that was bound to a double stranded DNA on an electrode, a normal double stranded DNA was able to be distinguished from a single stranded DNA in just a few seconds. Also, it was found that the peak reduction current of indicator is proportional to the concentration of target DNA to be hybridized with probe DNA. Therefore, it is possible to realize a simple and cheap DNA sensor using the electrochemical measurement for genotyping.

Minerals is required small amounts among various nutrients, but it has a significant impact on sow longevity and reproduction performance. This study was carried out to see the beneficial effects of marine-derived Ca-Mg complex on the reproductive performance of sows during four-parity periods. Seventy-two gilts ([Yorkshire × Landrace] × Duroc), with an average body weight of 181 kg, were randomly allocated to three groups; CON (basal diet), 0.3LC (CON - MgO - 0.3% limestone + 0.4% Ca-Mg complex), and 0.7LC (CON - MgO - 0.7% limestone + 0.4% Ca-Mg complex). During parity 3 and 4, the expression level of SCD gene was lower in the umbilical cord of piglets born to 0.3LC and 0.7LC sows compared with the CON sows. During parity 2, 3 and 4, SLC2A2 and FABP4 gene expressions were higher in the umbilical cord of piglets born to 0.7LC sows and the placenta of sows from 0.3LC groups, respectively. Ca-Mg complex increased (p < 0.05) Ca and Mg concentrations in sows and their piglets’ serum as well as in colostrum regardless of parities. The serum vitamin D concentration was higher (p < 0.05) in their first parity, whereas serum prolactin and estrogen concentrations were higher (p < 0.05) during the fourth and third parity, respectively. The growth hormone concentrations were higher (p < 0.05) in the piglets born to sows during the first and second parity. The fat and immunoglobulin A (IgA) concentrations in colostrum were higher (p < 0.05) during the third and fourth parity, respectively. A reduction (p < 0.05) in salivary cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine concentrations was observed in 0.3LC and 0.7LC sow groups compared with CON after farrowing regardless of parity, however before farrowing, a reduction in norepinephrine was observed. Before farrowing, the epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations were higher (p < 0.05) during the first and second parity. After farrowing, the concentration of these hormones was higher during the second parity. Taken together, sows’ parity and dietary Ca-Mg complex supplementation influenced serum metabolites, colostrum nutrients, stress hormones as well as the gene expressions related to lipid and glucose metabolism.
Electrical impedance analysis of cell growth using a parallel RC circuit model

For label-free and real-time monitoring of cells during growth, the electrical impedance of cell-covered electrodes was measured and analysed by an equivalent parallel-RC circuit model. The impedance of a cell-layer model was simulated in the frequency range of 100 Hz to 1 MHz at different cell sizes and cell-cell gaps by using finite element method to understand how morphological changes of cells affect the impedance of the cell-layer. The simulated impedance of the cell-layer could be represented by a parallel-connected capacitance and resistance at frequencies below 10 kHz but not at frequencies higher than 10 kHz. The capacitance and resistance of the celllayer were dependent on cell size and cell-cell gap. The impedance analysis of cells with the equivalent RC circuit model was proper to characterize the extracellular information and to estimate changes in cell size and cell-cell gap.

Ak(樂) has a function of wisdom as well as a function of music. As a music, it has played a role to make people be happy. Also, as a function of wisdom, it has been used as a tool of training man’s mind and as a political tool of ruling the people. In this paper, the conception of Ak, the function of Ak, and the composing principles of rhythm which makes Ak play its role were investigated with reference to ‘Akki(樂記)’, ‘Akhakguaebum(樂學軌範)’, ‘Yulreashinseo(律呂新書)’. After that, the relation between the principle of Yin(陰) and Yang(陽) and Ak was investigated. If Yin and Yang of Ak, as a function of music, harmonize with each other, it will be in a healthy state. On the other hand, if Yin and Yang of Ak separate from each other or become unbalanced, its harmony will be broken and it will be in confusion. These days our society has accomplished economic development and people enjoy materialistic comfort. However, the mental culture of people has been deteriorated and now our society demands balanced harmony. If we follow the harmonious principle of Yin and Yang of music in our daily life, and understand other people like ourselves, our country will be the best country in the world.
