We investigated the improvement in intestinal function and the constipation preventive and remedial effects of the fermented milk product R&B Rhythm(R) in mice and rats. The results showed that the effects varied significantly among different doses. The digestive tract transfer rate increased dramatically in a dose-dependent manner in both animals. Compared with treating constipation with loperamide alone, treatment with loperamide and the fermented milk R&B Rhythm improved the number of fecal pellets from the animals, suggesting that it is effective for preventing and relieving constipation. Both the quantity of feces and water content of the feces increased significantly at high levels of yogurt feeding. These results suggest that repetitively ingesting fermented milk products could be effective for preventing and treating constipation symptoms.

Purpose: We have studied the necessary qualities of seedlings of some leafy vegetables for a riding-type two-row automatic transplanter. When seedlings are planted using a transplanter, long roots may be rounded in the bottom of the tray, and this can interfere with the separation of the seedlings. Uprightness related to leaf spread angle is an important quality for seedlings in mechanical planting. Methods: To select cultivars suitable for the transplanter, we compared varieties of Kimchi cabbage (Chukwang, Daetong, Whipalam and Namdo), head lettuce (Abi and Sensation), cabbage (YR Onnuri, YR Hogel, Harutama, and Ogane), and broccoli (Nicegreen and Earlyyou). To compare the effect of bed soil on root formation and growth, we used five types of soil: Chologi, Burger, Wonjomix, Bio, and Baroker with 2.6-3 L per tray. Growth increment and the degree of root formation were measured according to the RDA guidelines 25 days after sowing for Kimchi cabbage and head lettuce and 44 days after sowing for cabbage and broccoli. Conclusions: According to the plug tray, the optimum seedling age in both 128- and 200-hole trays was 28 days for Kimchi cabbage and 44 days for cabbage and broccoli. Head lettuce took 35 days in 128-hole trays and 31 days in 200-hole trays. Burger soil was most effective for root formation and growth of the four kinds of leafy vegetables; it appeared that smaller soil volume led to faster root formation.
금주중인 알코올 의존 환자의 인지기능 회복에 관한 연구

Objectives:This study was performed to evaluate the cognitive deficit in alcoholic patients and the cognitive improvement during the course of abstinence. Subjects and Method: Subjects participated in the study were 32 alcoholic patients and 35 normal control group. Their alcoholic history and demographic data were taken and they were tested on cognitive assessment consists of Digit span, Paired association learning test, Digit symbol substitution test, Trail making B test, ReyOsterrith complex figure test. Patients were tested in 3 weeks and 6 months later. Results:In summary, the results of this study were as follows:1) In the comparison between alcohol group (3 weeks after abstinence) and normal control group, normal control group was superior to patient group in almost all the test except for first Paired association learning test. 2) In the comparison between serial cognitive follow-up test in alcohol group, there was significant cognitive improvement in almost all the test except for second Paired association learning test. 3) In the comparison between alcohol group (6 months after abstinence) and normal control group, there was no significant difference except for Trail making B test. 4) There was no significant correlation between cognitive function change and alcohol related factor. Conclusion:The results suggest that the cognitive deficit in alcoholic patients and cognitive improvement during the course of abstinence. Significant recovery of cognitive function can occur but may be contingent on the factors such as age and continued abstinence. On the other hand, when we consider the limitation of this study, more precise and standard test method and more longer follow up duration may be required.
요구르트가 신선계육의 저장기간 동안 미생물학적 품질 특성에 미치는 영향

This paper reports the results of the research on the effects of probiotic yogurt on the microbiological quality, pH, and sensorial characteristics of fresh chicken meat when packed with probiotic yogurt. The chicken meat pieces were packed with yogurt and were stored at $10^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Samples were taken after 0, 2, 4, and 7 days of storage, and were analyzed for total bacterial count, E. coli, and coliform, and for the chemical parameters, including the pH. In the control group (packed without yogurt), the Pseudomonas species predominated when the spoilage was obvious after 4-day storage at $10^{\circ}C$. The yogurt-mixed chicken meat package was found to have a significantly lower total viable count and significantly fewer coliform bacteria during storage. Furthermore, the yogurt package showed a growth-inhibiting effect on the Salmonella typhimurium, which were inoculated into the chicken meat pieces for the study. The study findings indicate that probiotic yogurt can be used in packing fresh chicken meat to decrease the population of spoilage bacteria therein and to extend its shelf life.

As a trial for the development of a new starter culture for yogurt products, more than two hundred lactic acid bacteria strains were isolated from raw milk and healthy human feces. The strains that showed excellent growth and acid production ability in the 10% skim milk media were selected and identified as Lactobacillus casei through the API carbohydrate fermentation pattern and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. L. casei CU2604 was further investigated for its physiological characteristics as a starter culture compared with a commercial strain. The CU2604 strain showed good acid production and growth characteristics in milk, which were comparable to those of the L. casei Shirota strain. Despite the fact that both these strains displayed the same sugar fermenting pattern and PFGE band pattern, and had similar growth characteristic in milk, L. casei CU2604 exhibited different fatty acid composition in the cell wall, showed more tolerance to bile and to pH, and presented better growth inhibition activity against pathogenic bacteria. Based on these results, the L. casei CU2604 strain holds great promise for use as a novel and efficient starter culture in the production of yogurt. Additional studies on the probiotic characteristics of this strain are currently being conducted.
Investigation into the Effects of Mosapride on Motility of Guinea Pig Stomach, Ileum, and Colon

Mosapride citrate (Mosapride) is a new prokinetic agent that enhances the gastrointestinal (GI) motility by stimulation of 5-HT4 receptors. This agent stimulates acetylcholine release from enteric cholinergic neurons in the GI wall. It was reported in several studies that mosapride selectively enhanced the upper, but not lower, GI motor activity. However, in these studies other 5-HT4 receptor agonists exerted stimulating effects on the motility of the colon. Moreover, it is well known that the receptors of 5-HT4 are also located in the colon. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of mosapride on the motility of the stomach, ileum and colon in the guinea pig and to investigate whether or not mosapride influenced the colonic motility. Mosapride significantly increased the amplitude of the contraction waves in the guinea pig stomach by electrical stimulation. In addition, it significantly increased the number of peaks, the area under the curve and the propagation velocity of the peristaltic contraction of the guinea pig ileum in a concentration dependent fashion. Mosapride also significantly shortened the transit time of the guinea pig colon. Accordingly, we concluded that mosapride exerted prokinetic effect on the entire GI tract of the guinea pig. Based on the possibility of similar results in humans, we suggest the potential use of mosapride for lower GI motor disorders such as constipation and upper GI motor disorders such as gastroesophageal reflex disease or gastroparesis.
