본 논문의 목적은 코메니우스의 교육사상 속에 나타난 세계시민교육에 대해 고찰하는 것이다. 코메니우스가 활동한 17세기의 유럽 사회는 30년 전쟁, 종교박해, 빈부격차 등으로 피폐해져 갔다. 그는 보헤미안 형제교단으로부터 천년왕국에 대한 믿음을 전수받았다. 그리고 그는 천년왕국의 도래가 곧 임박 했다는 것을 당시 유럽의 상황을 통해 직감하였다. 그는 천년왕국의 도래라는 측면에서 당시 사회와 세계의 개선에 관심을 가지고 교육 활동을 전개하였다. 그의 교육활동과 사상은 기본적으로 세계시민교육의 성격을 담지하고 있다. 그의 세계시민교육의 목표는 ‘세계의 형성’과 ‘활동’이다. 그에 따르면 인간에게 주어진 그리고 인간이 개선하고, 만들어 가야 하는 세계는 ‘학문,’ ‘정치,’ ‘종교’의 영역으로 인간은 누구나 이 영역들에서 활동을 하며, 세계를 만들어 간다. 세계의 형성을 위해 코메니우스는 세계에 대한 ‘이해’와 ‘판단’을 강조하였다. 왜냐하면 세계의 형성은 세계 사물에 대한 바른 사용에서 시작되는데, 사물의 바른 사용은 사물에 대한 바른 이해와 판단 속에서 가능하기 때문이다. 그리고 그는 바른 이해와 판단을 위한 관계적 사유의 방식을 제안했다. 관계적 사유는 ‘분석,’ ‘종합,’ ‘비교와 연결’의 사유로, 한 사물을 종합적으로 검토하는 것이다. 관계적 사유를 통해 우리는 각 사물의 고유한 의미를 발견할 수 있고 그 사물을 세계 내에서 바르게 사용·활용 할 수 있다. 코메니우스는 당시 유럽 사회에 내재된 문제들을 기독교 신앙으로 극복하고자 노력하였다. 그는 세계시민교육의 선구자로 그의 조언들은 세계화로 더 한층 중요해진 현시대의 세계시민교육에 다양한 시사점을 제공한다. The purpose of this paper is to survey the global citizenship education in the educational thought of J. A. Comenius. In the 17th century, when he was active, Europe was being devastated by Thirty Years’ War, religious persecution, and the gap between the rich and the poor. He had been taught of Christian millenarianism by Bohemian-Moravian United Brethren Church. The chaotic situation in Europe at the time made him realize the advent of the millennium kingdom is imminent, and he unfolded educational activities to improve the world. We could find the fundamental characteristics of a global citizenship education in Comenius’ educational activities and thoughts. His goals of a global citizenship education is the world formation and world-in-activities by human. He explains that the worlds given to us is that of science, politics, religion and we should make the worlds more better. And he emphasized understanding and judgment for the formation of the world. Because the formation of the world begins with the right use of things in the world, and it is possible in the right understanding and judgment of things. As tried to overcome the problems of European society at that time in Christian faith, he is a pioneer in global citizenship education. His advices would offer to us a variety of implications for global citizenship education.
