The purpose of this study is to establish the judging standards for the specific vacant houses in rural areas by using Analytic Hierarchy Process. This study using 5 judging standards; safety of building structure, fire and security safety, housing hygiene, housing and street scenery, and village (community) life environment. The main findings are as follows. First, when setting up vacant houses in rural areas, fire and security safety, village (community) life, and safety of building structure are relatively important. Second, when judging certain vacant houses in rural areas, concern of fire caused by electrical facilities and fire vulnerable substances (fire factors), contamination of drinking water sources and damage to surrounding facilities, building damage status, crime concerns, and various garbage neglects are considered as important factors. On the other hand, the damage and management status of the buildings of the vacant house were relatively low in importance. In Summary, whether fire, crime, and garbage neglect have a negative impact on village (community) life should be set as an important criteria rather than simple structure state of vacant houses.

A lot of models have been developed for prevention of human errors. Nevertheless most of them failed to attract attention of industry which has been looking for an integrative model that can show practical countermeasures as well as causal factors of human errors. This research aimed to develop a comprehensive model that can mainly be applied to industrial fields. Therefore, in the model, it was tried to explain sequences of an operator's information process that might cause human errors on one hand, and life cycle stages of facilities involved when human errors occur on the other hand. This model was validated by using a typical accident case. With the comprehensive model presented in this research, one could follow up the sequence of human errors caused by operators, and errors made at the design stage which might cause accidents could be tracked. As a consequence, it is expected that much attention would be paid to preventing human errors in industrial fields since safety personnel can easily find out cause of human errors throughout life cycle stages of man-machine facilities if utilizing the suggested model.

In acute injury, liver recovers completely without any scarring change or complication. However, large portion of liver is changed into fibrotic state by excessive production of extracellular matrix (ECM) under chronic injury. Excessive production of ECM results in hepatic fibrosis and repeated process of hepatic fibrosis progress into liver cirrhosis. Liver cirrhosis is an irreversible and terminal state of chronic liver disease and one of the major causes of death in Korea. To block the progression to liver cirrhosis, various studies in the field of virology and immunology have been proceeded. Recently, studies on the hepatic fibrogenesis have progressed with the development of molecular biology. Hepatic stellate cells (HSC) play a key role in the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis by producing ECM. The degree of hepatic fibrosis depends on the proliferation and activation of HSC and increased net production of collagen. Therefore, inhibition of HSC activation is one of the main ways to block the progression of hepatic fibrosis. Many kinds of factors such as oxidative stress, acetaldehyde, ascorbic acid, transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) have been reported to activate HSC and stimulate collagen gene expression. Although there are no definite and effective antifibrogenic agents, possible candidates are antioxidants, interferon, retinoids such as β-carotene, flavonoids, renin-angiotensin system inhibitors and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-gamma) agonists. We tried to evaluate the characteristics of HSC in order to develop agents that inhibit hepatic fibrogenesis. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2006;48:297-305)

Due to the high occurrence rate of musculoskeletal disorders(MSDs), many Korean companies adopted various assessment tools to evaluate workers' musculoskeletal stress. Using the results of this evaluation, tasks were selected for improvements. However, there are still many workers who complained of musculoskeletal stress of their tasks. Their tasks usually consist of repetitive activities and a short rest cycle. This prompts a concern of reliability of the evaluation tools and especially RULA. Thus in this study, OCRA(The Occupational Repetitive Action tool) was used to check whether RULA(Rapid Upper Limb Assessment) evaluates workers' musculoskeletal stress reasonably well since OCRA has been known to be a good evaluation tool for repetitive tasks and tasks with short recovery periods. The evaluation was conducted on 142 tasks. It was found that 65 tasks showed higher action levels by OCRA than by RULA. However, 13 tasks showed the reversed result and 64 tasks showed the same level regardless of the evaluation tool. It was concluded that either RULA or OCRA alone cannot evaluate all types of tasks very well. It is suggested that OCRA needs to be used with RULA together for the evaluations of musculoskeletal stress at workplaces where repetitive activities and short recovery periods exist.
