The Effects of Labor Composition on Hours Volatility: Evidence from the U.S.

For the past few decades, labor composition has changed drastically in the U.S. This paper examines how these changes help to explain the recent decline in aggregate hours fluctuations. I disaggregate workers by gender, education, marital status, and spousal characteristics among marriedworkers, and quantify the impact of their changing shares on cyclical volatility of hours at both the extensive and intensive margins. The main result is that these labor composition changes explain little of the reduction in hours volatility along the extensive margin, yet they explain a significant fraction of the fluctuations at the intensive margin. Educational attainment is the single most important factor in aggregate hours fluctuations: it accounts for 1% and 14% of cyclical volatility of employment rate and average weekly hours, respectively. I also find that spousal education among married workers with a working spouse played an important role in the phenomenon.
Reconstruction of Full Thickness Ala Defect with Nasolabial Fold and Septal Mucosal Hinge Flap

Reconstruction of a full-thickness alar defect requires independent blood supplies tothe inner and outer surfaces. Because of this, secondary operations are commonlyneeded for the division of skin flap from its origin. Here, we report a single-stage reconstructionof full-thickness alar defect, which was made possible by the use of a nasolabialisland flap and septal mucosal hinge flap. A 49-year-old female had presented witha squamous cell carcinoma of the right ala which was invading through the mucosa. The lesion was excised with a 5-mm free margin through the full-thickness of ala. Thelining and cartilage was restored using a septal mucosa hinge flap and a conchal cartilagefrom the ipsilateral ear. The superficial surface was covered with a nasolabialisland flap based on a perforator from the angular artery. The three separate tissuelayers were reconstructed as a single subunit, and no secondary operations were necessary. Single-stage reconstruction of the alar subunit was made possible by the useof a nasolabial island flap and septal mucosal hinge flap. Further studies are needed tocompare long-term outcomes following single-stage and multi-stage reconstructions
국내 주요 항공노선별 여객수송량 변화추이와 결정요인에 관한 연구

This paper analyzes yearly variation of the air passenger travel volume for domestic routes connecting major airports in Korea. Using aggregated statistical data, yearly variation of the air passenger travel volume is analyzed. The paper includes some descriptive statistical analyses on time-series data for domestic routes connecting major airports. The analysis is conducted on the period between the year 2002 and 2011. Furthermore, some direct air travel demand models are developed by panel regression analysis for finding factors affecting air passenger travel volume of each domestic route connecting major airports. Finally, some analytical results are summarized, and policy implications are discussed. The analytical results are summarized as follows. First, it is found that the air passenger travel volume for domestic routes connecting major airports, excluding Jeju and Incheon International Airport, is decreased between the year 2002 and 2011. Secondly, it is found that populations of origin and destination are the most important factors affecting air passenger travel volume. 본 논문에서는 2002년에서 2011년 사이(10년간) 국내 주요 대도시권의 공항과 제주국제공항의 출발 여객수송량의 변화추이와 결정요인 분석을 실시하였다. 주요 공항의 항공노선별 여객수송량의 결정요인 분석은 선행연구를 검토하여 설명변수를 선정하였으며, 다양한 설명변수를 포함하여 패널회귀분석을 실시하였다. 패널회귀분석을 위해 주요 공항의 연도별˙노선별 항공여객수송량 자료(패널자료)를 종속변수로 사용하였다. 마지막으로 분석 결과를 요약한 후 정책적 시사점 및 한계를 제시하였다. 본 연구의 분석 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 국내 주요 항공노선별 여객수송량의 변화는 분석기간 동안 제주와 인천국제공항을 출발지와 목적지로 하는 노선을 제외하고 대부분의 도시 간 여객수송량이 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 국내 주요 내륙공항의 출발 여객수송량의 결정요인을 분석한 결과 출발지(도시)와 목적지(도시) 인구의 합이 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 다음으로 출발지와 목적지 간의 항공통행시간에 대한 철도통행시간의 비율이 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 제주국제공항의 출발 여객수송량 결정요인 분석을 위한 패널회귀모형 추정결과 출발지와 목적지의 인구가 큰 영향을 미치는 변수임을 확인할 수 있었다.

Background An anatomical analysis of the transverse carpal ligament (TCL) and the surrounding structures might help in identifying effective measures to minimize complications. Here, we present a surgical technique based on an anatomical study that was successfully applied in clinical settings. Methods Using 13 hands from 8 formalin-fixed cadavers, we measured the TCL length and thickness, correlation between the distal wrist crease and the proximal end of the TCL, and distance between the distal end of the TCL and the palmar arch; the TCL cross sections and the thickest parts were also examined. Clinically, fasciotomy was performed on the relevant parts of 15 hands from 13 patients by making a minimally invasive incision on the distal wrist crease. Postoperatively, a two-point discrimination check was conducted in which the sensations of the first, second, and third fingertips and the palmar cutaneous branch injuries were monitored (average duration, 7 months). Results In the 13 cadaveric hands, the distal wrist crease and the proximal end of the TCL were placed in the same location. The average length of the TCL and the distance from the distal TCL to the superficial palmar arch were 35.30±2.59 mm and 9.50±2.13 mm, respectively. The thickest part of the TCL was a region 25 mm distal to the distal wrist crease (average thickness, 4.00±0.57 mm). The 13 surgeries performed in the clinical settings yielded satisfactory results. Conclusions This peri-TCL anatomical study confirmed the safety of fasciotomy with a minimally invasive incision of the distal wrist crease. The clinical application of the technique indicated that the minimally invasive incision of the distal wrist crease was efficacious in the treatment of the carpal tunnel syndrome.
A New Record for the Genus Duplachionaspis Armored Scale (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) from Korea

Duplachionaspis속(屬)의 D. divergens (Green, 1899) 1종을 국내분포로 처음 보고하고, 동 속과 종의 특징, 동아시아산 Duplachionaspis속(屬)의 종 동정에 필요한 검색표, 사진자료, 분포 및 기주 정보를 함께 기재하였다. One species of the Duplachionaspis, D. divergens (Green, 1899) is newly recorded in the Korean fauna of armored scales (Diaspididae). The characters of this genus and species are here redescribed from Korean specimens. A key to species of Duplachionaspis from the East Palaearctic Region, photographs and information on the distribution and hosts of this species, are also provided.
