For many years there have been publications of regarding the possible relationship of benign breast lesions to the subsequent occurrence of cancer. Recently there have been presented the atypical lesions as precancerous lesion of the breast. For this interesting reasons, the histopathological study of ductal and lobular cell proliferations, which are thought to have relationship with atypical lesions, was performed to compare with the frequency of ductal and lobular cell proliferations in the benign breast lesions and in the remaining breast tissues of cancer for 5 years from 1976 to 1981 in Ewha Womans University Hospital. The peak age of prtients of breast carcinoma was 40∼49 years, and that of benign was 20∼29 years. In a total 111 cases of benign breast lesions, ductal cell proliferations with moderate to severe degree was present in 64% of adenosis, 50% of fibroadenoma and 0% of fibrosis. Meanwhile, in a total 25 cases of remaining breast tissues of carcinoma, ductal cell proliferations of same degree subgroups in breast carcinoma in this study. Severe degree of ductal cell proliferations were found in 15% of the benign breast lesions and in 32% of the remaining breast tissues of cancer. It ductal cell proliferations comparing with benign breast lesions. Although the lobular cell proliferations was more frequently found than benign breast lesions, it was not so significant in both benign and remaining breast tissues of cancer. It is not certain that ductal cell proliferations of the breast is definitely precancerous findings with this limited study, but it can be assumed that this is probably related to atypical lesions, that is thought to be precancerous and that a special attention for both pathologists and surgeons should be necessary.
