The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among mothers’ play beliefs, creative home environments, and young children’s overdependence on smart devices. Additionally, an observation was made on whether the creative home environment mediated the relationship between mothers’ play beliefs and their children’s smart device overdependence. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on 224 mothers with children aged 3~5, residing in Gyeonggi Province. Pearson’s correlation analysis and Hayes’ mediation analysis were performed on the collected data using SPSS 29.0 and PROCESS macro 4.2 statistical programs. Bootstrapping was also performed to verify the statistical significance of indirect effects. The results indicated that firstly, mothers’ play beliefs were negatively correlated with children’s overdependence on smart devices, while mothers’ play beliefs and creative home environment showed a positive correlation. Creative home environments were negatively correlated with children’s overdependence on smart devices. Secondly, the creative home environment partially mediated the effect of mothers’ play beliefs on their children’s smart device overdependence. This study highlights the importance of mothers’ play beliefs and the creation of a creative home environment, providing the foundational data that can help in the prevention and reduction of young children’s overdependence on smart devices.
