        북한의 2013 교육과정 개정 전·후 고등학교 영어교과서 비교분석

        This paper aims to investigate the recent changes in English education in North Korea and compare the differences in pre- and post-2013 Revised Curricula in high school English textbooks. To this end, three post-2013 Revised Curriculum high school textbooks are compared with three pre-2013 Revised Curriculum textbooks. By using contents analysis, particularly relying on Coh-Metrix, these textbooks are compared considering three categories: physical characteristics and chapter/content organizations, topics, and readability in each school year. First, along with listening materials, a renewed emphasis on English verbal communication was found in the revised textbooks. Second, revised textbooks included more practical topics such as science, technology, and everyday life, whereas pre-revision textbooks comprised of more communist ideology, idolizing the Kim family, and promoting patriotism. Third, in terms of readability of textbooks, the analysis of Coh-Metrix revealed that the burden of learners increased due to the exponentially increased volume of new vocabulary textbooks. However, in the case of pre-2013 textbooks, the difficulty level of reading sections in each year fluctuated, whereas that of the post-2013 textbooks presents a steady increase as students advance in their school grade.

        영어 학습자 동기 및 탈동기 요인분석: 학습동기 회고록 및 면담을 바탕으로

        This paper identifies how the factors that increase or decrease learners’ English learning motivation differ according to the upper and lower motivation groups. A total of six undergraduate students were selected among 41 students, with three highest motivators and the other three lowest. They reflected on their English learning processes over the past ten years from the third grade of elementary school to the third grade of high school with critical reflective essays, marking annual changes in their L2 learning motivation on the ‘motigraph.’ In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted, and all the data were comprehensively analyzed with Grounded Theory. The results present that learners with high learning motivation could maintain their motivation due to internal factors such as specific learning goals or learning experiences. In contrast, learners with low motivation were remotivated due to external factors such as learning situation and their acquaintances. Both groups commonly experienced a significant decrease in learning motivation during middle school due to excessive academic pressure or skepticism from test-oriented learning environments. However, it should be noted that both groups at the high school level assessed the ‘grade’-related factors differently as positive or negative, respectively. This paper emphasizes the crucial role of cognitive appraisal, goal-setting, and mindset.

        한국 초등 영어교육과정 25년사: 제6차에서 2022 개정 교육과정까지

        This study undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the elementary English curricula in Korea since the implementation of elementary English education in 1997. The research examines the transformations that have occurred in the curriculum’s 1) nature and objectives, 2) content system and achievement standards, and 3) teaching-learning methods and assessment aspects across six revisions. Employing a systematic literature review methodology, the study scrutinizes the six curricula to shed light on the changes that have transpired. Despite several revisions, the fundamental nature and objectives of elementary English education continue to emphasize the significance of early English education in cultivating students’ interest and confidence in learning English. Different configurations were found for the content system. The teaching-learning methods and assessment standards were simplified, and their objectives were changed from being organized by individual grades to being organized by grade groups. Consequently, achievement standards also tended to decrease quantitatively. This paper also discusses the implications of these curriculum changes for English education in Korea.

        Assessing the Relative Roles of Vocabulary and Syntactic Knowledge in Reading Comprehension

        The purpose of the study was to explore the relative contribution of both vocabulary knowledge and grammatical knowledge as predictors of reading comprehension performance. To accomplish this, a total of 337 college students voluntarily participated in the study, all of whom were then taking an English reading course at two different universities. The measurement instruments used for the study were based on three sections: vocabulary, grammar, and reading comprehension. Each section consisted of two different tasks. For all the tasks except the recall task, the scoring procedure proved easy and expedient, with 1 point being assigned for correct items, and 0 point for incorrect ones. To obtain valid measures for the recall task, the learners were scored using Johnson’s (1970) unweighted pausal unit analysis. For the data analysis, structural equation modeling (SEM) was conducted to evaluate the role of syntactic knowledge and vocabulary knowledge where it predicts the L2 reading ability of the learners. The SEM analysis indicated that vocabulary knowledge and grammatical knowledge variables made contributions to the prediction of reading comprehension performance, with vocabulary knowledge outperforming grammar in its predictive power. Implications and limitations of the study are also discussed in this study.

      • 터널 3D 진단시스템 개발 및 적용사례

        한국도로공사는 내공단면을 갖는 터널 및 암거 구조물에 대해 3D 진단시스템을 개발하여 운영 중이다. 기존 검사방식의 부정확성을 줄이고 정밀도 향상을 위해 3D cloud point를 이용하는 방식을 채택하였다. 본 진단시스템으로 내공단면 구조물의 변형도 평가, 안정성검토, 상태평가 등을 수행하고 있으며, 터널 시공 단계별 적용이 가능하여 관리자의 합리적인 판단이 가능하도록 지원하고 있다. 과학적 진단 시스템의 도입으로 안정성 향상과 시공관리 효율 향상에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

        A study on the framing of North Korean Defector in the media: Focusing on the case of Y. S. Kim

        The media exerts a considerable influence on the formation of images and discourses pertaining to North Korean defectors. This study endeavours to conduct a case analysis of the manner in which the media creates images of North Korean defectors and defines their identities. To this end, this focuses on Y. S. Kim, a North Korean defector who came to South Korea in 2003. Y. S. Kim was selected due to her possession of a number of distinctive characteristics that set her apart from ordinary North Korean defectors. Her diachronic experience of being born during the Japanese occupation, her spatial experience of having lived in both North and South Korea, her status as a woman from the upper echelons of Pyongyang, North Korea, her background as a cultural artist who majored in dance, and her history as a political prisoner have all provided avenues for extensive media exposure. In this study, the full narrative of Y. S. Kim’s life was identified through literature research and oral interviews, and analyzed the broadcast videos that interviewed Y.S. Kim about how they covered her. Based on this, I analyzed which parts of Y.S. Kim’s life were highlighted, compared the life narrative and content, and identified the characteristics of the media and the public’s reaction to her. The results showed that the South Korean media tends to emphasize certain frames by repeating and expanding certain parts, rather than covering the defector’s story in full and that various parts of the defector’s life narrative are not covered.

        Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC) is notorious for its poor outcome and increasing incidence. But, the studies of cytogenetic analysis in HNSCC are relatively rare, because of difficulties in culturing solid tumor cells and complexity in chromosomal DNA abberations associated with the lesions. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the location of chromosomal aberrations in Korean HNSCC cell lines (SNU-1041, 1066, and 1076) with comparative genomic hybridization(CGH) and array based CGH(array-CGH). Chromosomal gains of 3q23-q27, 5p13-p15.3, 7p21-pter, 8q11.2-q12, 8q21.1-qter, 9q22-q34, 16q22-q24, and 20q11.2-qter, as well as chromosomal losses on 3p10-p14 were found in all 3 SNU cell lines. Losses on 3p15-p23, 4q22-q27, 4q31.3-qter, 6q14-q15, 7q31-q34, 8p12-pter, 18q21-q23, and 21q11.2-q12 were observed in 2 of 3 cell lines. In array-CGH, many genes were altered including gains of PIK3CA, MYC, EVI1, MAD1L1 genes and losses of SERPIN genes. These aberrations of gene and chromosome coincide with other results of study, generally. These data about the patterns of chromosomal aberrations could be a basic step for understanding more de-tailed genetic events in the carcinogenesis and also provide information for diagosis and treatment in HNSCC.

        L2 Writing and Vocabulary Development: A Comparison of Lexical Quality Across Written Compositions with Different Planning Activities

        The purpose of the study is mainly to examine whether learners are able to improve their level of vocabulary through different types of planning activities. In addition, the study also aims at exploring the extent to which their vocabulary is improved and what difference is made with regard to the planning activities, which they utilized during their writing tasks. To see if planning activities was useful in improving the lexical quality of writing, three sets of timed compositions produced by 71 university students were analyzed using the Lexical Frequency Profile (LFP). The results indicated that there were significant differences among written compositions in terms of the three variables—word token, lexical variation, and lexical density. Overall, word token at most of the vocabulary levels tended to increase regardless of any type of planning activities while learners showed vocabulary improvement in terms of lexical variation including 1000 and ‘not in the list’ level. However, the result of lexical density showed that the planning activities did not affect the lexical density of the composition since learners got the highest scores in the first writing task with no planning activity. The implications of these findings are discussed with the usefulness of planning activities which help learners to effectively retrieve vocabulary and select correct forms.
