        북한의 2013 교육과정 개정 전·후 고등학교 영어교과서 비교분석

        This paper aims to investigate the recent changes in English education in North Korea and compare the differences in pre- and post-2013 Revised Curricula in high school English textbooks. To this end, three post-2013 Revised Curriculum high school textbooks are compared with three pre-2013 Revised Curriculum textbooks. By using contents analysis, particularly relying on Coh-Metrix, these textbooks are compared considering three categories: physical characteristics and chapter/content organizations, topics, and readability in each school year. First, along with listening materials, a renewed emphasis on English verbal communication was found in the revised textbooks. Second, revised textbooks included more practical topics such as science, technology, and everyday life, whereas pre-revision textbooks comprised of more communist ideology, idolizing the Kim family, and promoting patriotism. Third, in terms of readability of textbooks, the analysis of Coh-Metrix revealed that the burden of learners increased due to the exponentially increased volume of new vocabulary textbooks. However, in the case of pre-2013 textbooks, the difficulty level of reading sections in each year fluctuated, whereas that of the post-2013 textbooks presents a steady increase as students advance in their school grade.

        영어 학습자 동기 및 탈동기 요인분석: 학습동기 회고록 및 면담을 바탕으로

        This paper identifies how the factors that increase or decrease learners’ English learning motivation differ according to the upper and lower motivation groups. A total of six undergraduate students were selected among 41 students, with three highest motivators and the other three lowest. They reflected on their English learning processes over the past ten years from the third grade of elementary school to the third grade of high school with critical reflective essays, marking annual changes in their L2 learning motivation on the ‘motigraph.’ In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted, and all the data were comprehensively analyzed with Grounded Theory. The results present that learners with high learning motivation could maintain their motivation due to internal factors such as specific learning goals or learning experiences. In contrast, learners with low motivation were remotivated due to external factors such as learning situation and their acquaintances. Both groups commonly experienced a significant decrease in learning motivation during middle school due to excessive academic pressure or skepticism from test-oriented learning environments. However, it should be noted that both groups at the high school level assessed the ‘grade’-related factors differently as positive or negative, respectively. This paper emphasizes the crucial role of cognitive appraisal, goal-setting, and mindset.

        한국 초등 영어교육과정 25년사: 제6차에서 2022 개정 교육과정까지

        This study undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the elementary English curricula in Korea since the implementation of elementary English education in 1997. The research examines the transformations that have occurred in the curriculum’s 1) nature and objectives, 2) content system and achievement standards, and 3) teaching-learning methods and assessment aspects across six revisions. Employing a systematic literature review methodology, the study scrutinizes the six curricula to shed light on the changes that have transpired. Despite several revisions, the fundamental nature and objectives of elementary English education continue to emphasize the significance of early English education in cultivating students’ interest and confidence in learning English. Different configurations were found for the content system. The teaching-learning methods and assessment standards were simplified, and their objectives were changed from being organized by individual grades to being organized by grade groups. Consequently, achievement standards also tended to decrease quantitatively. This paper also discusses the implications of these curriculum changes for English education in Korea.

        A Validity Study on the Vocabulary Grade Levels Test for Korean Elementary Students

        The primary goal of the study was to provide some preliminary validity evidence for the Vocabulary Grade Levels Test (Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education, 2009), which is designed to measure the receptive vocabulary knowledge of learners in L2. For the purpose of the current study, 327 participants at the elementary school participated in the study and were asked to take two different vocabulary tests. Namely, a Vocabulary Size Test (Nation, 2001) and a Vocabulary Grade Levels Test. The data were analyzed using correlation in order to discover the relationship between these two types of tests. Following this, the Rasch analysis was conducted to examine the reliability and validity of the measurement in question. The data analysis showed that both grade separation reliability and item separation reliability were high, indicating that the Vocabulary Grade Levels Test well discriminates learners with a wide range of proficiency levels. The findings of the study are discussed, along with further improvements in order to ascertain the validity of this particular vocabulary test.

        미등록 이주민의 건강 관리와 보건의료서비스 이용 경험:심층 인터뷰와 근거이론방법을 중심으로

        The objectives of this study were to examine the health management process of undocumented migrants and identify potential barriers preventing them from using health and medical care. To achieve these objectives, this study conducted in-depth interviews with 14 undocumented migrants and analyzed the data using the grounded theory. The analysis results showed that undocumented migrants are prone to ill health because of their poor working environment but experience many restrictions in using health and medical care. There were cases where the employers prevent them from going to a clinic. Undocumented migrants lacked channels to obtain medical information and had difficulty covering their medical expenses with their low wages. Moreover, they showed a strong tendency to tolerate pain and avoid going to a medical institution for fear of being exposed of their undocumented status. As a result, undocumented migrants often used health and medical care services only after their health conditions have seriously deteriorated. Even when they do visit a medical institute, they had difficulties in communicating with medical staff and, in some cases, received unkind or discriminating treatment from the medical staff. To sum up, when using health and medical care services, undocumented migrants were affected by economic, labor environment, information accessibility, and visa status (no visa) factors, and experienced barriers such communication difficulties and problems associated with interactions with medical staffs. Based on these findings, four types of undocumented migrants were deduced; 'optimistic', 'despairing, 'resigning', and 'abandoning' types. The barriers that heavily affected these types undocumented migrants were economic factors and communication difficulties. Also, visa status and labor conditions were factors hard to ignore since the problems were common in all types of undocumented migrants. 본 연구는 미등록 이주민의 건강 관리 과정을 살펴보고, 이들의 보건의료서비스 이용에 어떤 장애 요인이 존재하는지 파악한 것이다. 이를 위해 미등록 이주민 14명을 심층 인터뷰하고 근거이론방법으로 분석하였다. 그 결과, 미등록 이주민은 열악한 노동환경에서 일하기 때문에 건강이 나빠지기 쉬운 반면 보건의료서비스를 이용하는데 많은 제약이 존재했다. 사업주가 병원에 가지 못하게 하거나, 의료정보를 얻을 수 있는 곳이 드물었고, 낮은 임금으로 의료비를 지불하기 힘들었다. 더욱이, 비자가 없다는 두려움으로 의료기관에 가는 것을 꺼려 아픈 것을 참는 경향이 컸다. 결국 미등록 이주민들은 건강이 악화한 후에야 보건의료서비스를 이용하는 경우가 많은데, 이 경우에도 의료진과의 언어소통에 어려움을 겪었고, 경우에 따라선 의료진으로부터 불친절하거나 차별적인 대우를 받기까지 했다. 정리하면, 미등록 이주민은 보건의료서비스 이용 시, 경제적 요인, 노동환경 요인, 정보 접근성 요인, 무비자(비자 없음), 언어소통의 어려움, 의료진과의 상호작용 문제라는 장벽을 경험했다. 이것을 토대로 4가지 유형을 도출할 수 있었는데, ‘낙관형’, ‘절망형’, ‘체념형’, ‘포기형’이 있었다. 여기에 많은 영향을 준 범주는 ‘경제적 요인’과 ‘언어소통 가능 여부’였다. 그러나 모든 유형에 공통적으로 나타나는 ‘무비자여서 겪는 어려움’과 ‘노동환경 요인’ 역시 고려해야 한다.

        말안장내 신경초종(Intrasellar Schwannoma): 증례 보고

        Schwannomas usually arise from sensory nerves, and most often from the vestibular component of the acoustic nerve. Intrasellar and parasellar schwannomas are exceedingly rare. It is difficult to distinguish them from typical pituitary macroadenomas because of their clinical and radiological resemblance. In this report, we present an unusual case of an intrasellar schwannoma with a suprasellar extension that radiographically simulated a pituitary macroadenoma. 신경초종은 청신경에서 주로 발생하며 매우 드물게 말안장 내나 말안장 주위에서 발생할 수 있는데 이때 뇌하수체 거대선종과 유사한 소견을 보여 영상 소견으로는 감별이 어렵다. 저자들은 말안장 내에 위치하면서 말안장 위로 연장한 소견을 보이는 말안장 내 신경초종 1예를 경험하였기에 이를 보고한다.

        Comparing Perceptions of Evaluative Criteria in EFL Writing Between Learner and Instructor Group

        The quantitative study investigated perceptions of evaluative criteria in L2 writing between two groups – learners (N=212) and instructors (N=52) in Korea. Specifically, the purpose of the study is (1) to examine learners’ and instructors’ perceptions on evaluative criteria in L2 writing and to provide empirical evidence concerning how they respond to a list of them and (2) to ultimately devise appropriate rating criteria applicable to an EFL context like Korea. Analyses of evaluative criteria were conducted using factor analysis and yielded the following results: learner and instructor groups perceived the evaluative criteria differently and weighted them in a different way. For the learner group, the combined elements of grammar and language in use were identified as Factor 1 and mechanics as Factor 2. The results may infer that learners’ response patterns are primarily linked to their instructors’ writing practice in class, which may largely focus on grammatical knowledge based on lexical use and mechanical accuracy. Similarly, the instructor group acknowledged grammatical knowledge as Factor 1 and lexical use as Factor 2. The first two factors found in both learner and instructor groups indicate that in an EFL context like Korea, the form-then-content way of teaching and learning is still being considered more effective in L2 writing than any other method. Taking into consideration these perceptive similarities and differences between learners and instructors, the categories of evaluative criteria in writing include content and organization, grammar, mechanics, language in use, and flow of the essay, respectively.

        Sjogren 증후군에서 신주위와 신동의 양성 림프세포증식질환: 증례 보고

        Sjo ¨gren 증후군에서 신동과 신주위에서 발생하여 악성림프종으로 오인된 양성 림프세포증식질환을 보고한다. CT에서 병변은 양측 신동에서 균일하게 조영증강되는 연부조직종괴와 신주위로 얇은 연부조직 띠로 보였다. 초음파에서도 신동의 저에코의 종괴와 신주위의 저에코의 띠로 보였다. 스테로이드 치료 후 병변은 소실되었다. 드물지만 Sjo ¨gren 증후군에서 림프종과 유사한 양성 림프세포증식질환이 발생할 수 있으므로 적극적인 조직학적 검사가 필요하다.
