        An Exploratory Study of Acoustic Cues in Stop Production in Gangneung Korean

        This study investigated voice onset time (VOT) in Korean stop consonants and the fundamental frequency (f0) of post-stop vowels in Gangneung Korean (a tonal variety). These aspects were compared with those of Seoul Korean (non-tonal), considering phonation types, place of articulation, and vowel context. Twenty speakers provided a total of 1,620 speech samples, and 3,240 measurements were taken. Linear mixed effect modeling was conducted using R. The results showed that Gangneung and Seoul speakers produced similar VOTs for aspirated and lenis stops but revealed f0 differences among phonation types despite the gradual loss of pitch accent in young Gangneung Korean speakers. Place of articulation and vowel context effect did not vary significantly between dialects. This paper discusses the implications for the ongoing changes in VOT and f0 in stop productions in tonal languages.

        Styrene Oxide에서 2-Phenylethanol(PEA)를 생성하는 Pseudomonas putida Strain 2150-2의 분리 동정

        울산 유공 옥시케미칼 (주) PO/SM 공장 주변의 토양 샘플로부터 스티렌을 분해하여 성장하는 균주를 분리하였는데, 이 균주에 대한 생리·생화학적, 형태학적 특성을 조사한 결과와 DNA G+C 함량에서 Pseudomonas putida로 동정되었다. 이 균주의 스티렌 옥사이드에서 2-phenylethanol로의 대사경로가 연구되었고, 이 균주에 의해 스티렌 옥사이드가 페닐아세트알데하이드로, 다음에 2-phenylethanol(PEA)로, 그리고 페닐초산으로 대사되어 기존의 스티렌 자화 균주와는 다른 페닐초산으로 대사되어 기존의 스티렌 자화 균주와는 다른 대사경로를 가짐을 확인할 수 있었다. The strain which produces 2-phenylethanol (PEA) from syrene oxide was isolated from soil samples near Ulsan PO/SM plant. The isolated strain was identified as Pseudomonas putida through its morphological, physiological characteristics, and DNA G+C contents. Its metabolic pathway from styrene oxide to 2-phenylethanol was studied and it was found that styrene oxide was transformed to phenylacetaldehyde, to 2-phenylethanol (PEA), and then to phenylacetic acid by this strain.

        엔진 고공 시험에서 연료 유량 측정용 터빈 유량계의 측정 불확도 분석

        Measurement uncertainty analysis of fuel flow using turbine flowmeter was performed for the case of altitude engine test. SAE ARP4990 was used as the fuel flow calculation procedure, as well as the mathematical model for the measurement uncertainty assessment. The assessment was performed using Sensitivity Coefficient Method. 11 parameters involved in the calculation of the flow rate were considered. For the given equipment setup, the measurement uncertainty of fuel flow was assessed in the range of 1.19~1.86 % for high flow rate case, and 1.47~3.31 % for low flow rate case. Fluctuation in frequency signal from the flowmeter had the largest influence on the fuel flow measurement uncertainty for most cases. Fuel temperature measurement had the largest for the case of low temperature and low flow rate. Calibration of K-factor and the interpolation of the calibration data also had large influence, especially for the case of very low temperature. Reference temperature, at which the reference viscosity of the sample fuel was measured, had relatively small contribution, but it became larger when the operating fuel temperature was far from reference temperature. Measurement of reference density had small contribution on the flow rate uncertainty. Fuel pressure and atmospheric pressure measurement had virtually no contribution on the flow rate uncertainty.

        In this paper, a new method is suggested to analyze impulsive stresses at loading poing of concentrated impact load under certain impact conditions determined by impact velocity, stiffness of plate and mass of impact body, etc. The impulsive stresses are analyzed by using the three dimensional dynamic theory of elasticity so as to analytically clarify the generation phenomenon of cone crack at the impact fracture of fragile materials (to be discussed if the second paper). The Lagrange's plate theory and Hertz's law of contact theory are used for the analysis of impact load, and the approximate equation of impact load is suggested to analyze the impulsive stresses at the impact point to decide the ranage of impact load factor. When impact load factors are over and under 0.263, approximate equations are suggested to be F(t)=Aexp(-Bt)sinCt and F(t)=Aexp(-bt) {1-exp(Ct)} respectively. Also, the inverse Laplace transformation is done by using the F.F.T.(fast fourier transform) algorithm. And in order to clarity the validity of stress analysis method, experiments on strain fluctuation at impact point are performed on a supported square glass plate. Finally, these analytical results are shown to be in close agreement with experimental results.

        Pause-Tonic Stress Interaction in English L2 Speech of Korean Talkers with Different Proficiency Levels

        This study reports on the interaction of pause and tonic stress production in L2 English speech. Pause and tonic stress are important prosodic manifestations of information structures that are crucial in facilitating listeners’ speech comprehension. Examinations were conducted on the placement of tonic stress and pauses within each tonality of read speech by 35 Korean adult learners. The participants were separated into three groups based on their speech comprehensibility and foreign-accent scores, using a Hierarchical Cluster Analysis. Each cluster revealed distinctive-both quantitative and qualitative-uses of tonic stress and pauses. As pronunciation proficiency increased, learners produced more accurate tonic stress and less frequent pauses within a tonality. In particular, participants with lower proficiency levels frequently placed pauses before less informative words. It is recommended that pronunciation be taught in a way that incorporates information structure, with a focus on pauses and tonic stress.

        고등학교 영어 기초학력 미달에 영향을 미치는 학생 특성 요인: COVID-19 전후 비교

        This study aimed to investigate the effect of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the factors predicting the English achievement of Korean high school students in the National Assessment of Educational Achievement(NAEA). Accordingly, this study addressed the following two research questions. First, what are the differences in student characteristics between the below-basic achievement level students and basic-and-above achievement level students before and after the COVID-19 outbreak? Second, what changes have occurred in the factors predicting high school students’ English achievement levels between 2019 and 2020? Altogether Nineteen variables related to family background, daily life, school life, IT use, and cognitive and affective abilities were examined, and t-tests and binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to answer the research questions. The results indicated that students' self-directed learning ability became more important following the COVID-19 outbreak. This suggests that it is necessary to not only manage the quality of the content of online classes and emphasize on digital literacy, but also help students develop their self-directed learning skills, such that they can effectively manage their own learning and use learning strategies.

        CFRP 적층재의 잔류피로굽힘강도에 미치는 열습의 영향

        This paper evaluates the static and fatigue bending strengths of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastic) laminates subjected to hygrothermals. The specimens which had different stacking composition, orthotropic and quasi-isotropic laminated plates, were prepared for this experiment. A steel ball launched by the air gun collides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damages, and the 3-point fatigue bending test is carried out by using the impacted laminates to investigate the influence of hygrothermals on the effect on the residual bending fatigue strength of CFRP laminates.

        Instructional Effects on Voice Onset Time Perception in L2 Speech Segmentation

        This study examined the effects of instruction on the English word boundary perception of Korean learners of English. The focus of this study was the appropriate use of Voice Onset Time (VOT) of English voiceless stops (p, t, k) in word initial (e.g., top) and after word initial s position (e.g., stop) signaling the presence and absence of a word boundary before the stop consonant. There were 48 participants in the study, who were assessed three times: before instruction (pre-test), immediately after instruction (post-test), and five weeks after instruction (delayed post-test). Results revealed that participants’ perceptual accuracy improved significantly in both VOT positions in segmentation after instruction. However, the improvement was more prominent in word initial than after word initial s. Among word initial stop consonants, velar stops were the most difficult to acquire, while after initial s, bilabial stops were the most difficult and alveolar stops were the easiest to acquire.
