Mechanism for Unfaulting of an Extrinsic Frank Loop with <112> Edges by Glide Dislocations
2008 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.52 No.4
The interaction between dislocations and radiation defects plays a critical role in the formation of a clear channel, which results in a heterogeneous, localized plastic deformation of irradiated materials. We applied a molecular dynamics method to simulate the interaction between an extrinsic Frank loop, which is the dominant radiation defects of austenitic steels and glide dislocations to investigate the mechanism of defect elimination. We found that two dislocations in two different parallel slip planes played cooperatively to remove the defect. This finding implies that a group of dislocations is responsible for a cleared channel by moving in a group and eliminating the defects.

Residual stress in sputter-deposited molybdenum thin films was studied via a X-ray diffraction with PSD (position sensitive detector) and MCA (multi-channel analyzer). The average strain tensor of the film was determined from sin²Ψ method. Measuring time could be reduced significantly and average stress tensor of a thin film was evaluated easily using PSD and MCA. Instrumental errors due to beam optics and misalignment were corrected with a random molybdenum specimen. Orientation distribution function was calculated from the measured pole figures. Assuming plane stress state conditions average stress tensor of the film was evaluated from the volume averaged stiffness tensor. The measured residual stress from PSD was compared with the biaxial stress evaluated from substrate curvature method.

MULTISCALE MODELING OF RADIATION EFFECTS ON MATERIALS: PRESSURE VESSEL EMBRITTLEMENT
2009 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.41 No.1
Radiation effects on materials are inherently multiscale phenomena in view of the fact that various processes spanning a broad range of time and length scales are involved. A multiscale modeling approach to embrittlement of pressure vessel steels is presented here. The approach includes an investigation of the mechanisms of defect accumulation, microstructure evolution and the corresponding effects on mechanical properties. An understanding of these phenomena is required to predict the behavior of structural materials under irradiation. We used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at an atomic scale to study the evolution of high-energy displacement cascade reactions. The MD simulations yield quantitative information on primary damage. Using a database of displacement cascades generated by the MD simulations, we can estimate the accumulation of defects over diffusional length and time scales by applying kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The evolution of the local microstructure under irradiation is responsible for changes in the physical and mechanical properties of materials. Mechanical property changes in irradiated materials are modeled by dislocation dynamics simulations, which simulate a collective motion of dislocations that interact with the defects. In this paper, we present a multiscale modeling methodology that describes reactor pressure vessel embrittlement in a light water reactor environment.
