A theoretical analysis on the heat and mass transfer in an evaporative cooler is presented in this work. The evaporative cooler is modeled as a channel filled with porous media the interstitial surface of which is covered by thin water film. Assuming that the Lewis number is unity and the water vapor saturation curve is linear, exact solutions to the energy and vapor concentration equations are obtained. Based on the exact solutions, the characteristics of the heat and mass transfer in the evaporative cooler are investigated. The comparison of the cooling performance between the evaporative cooler and the usual sensible heat exchanger is also carried out. Obviously, the evaporative heat exchanger shows better cooling performance than the sensible heat exchanger. This is due to the latent heat of water vaporization, which results in apparent increases both in the interstitial heat transfer coefficient and the specific heat of the air stream in the evaporative cooler.

The present study has been conducted for a heat pump system for hot water supply using air as a heat source. Heat pump with inverter compressor was compared with fixed compressor type system and KSCOP conditions were applied to the system. Sensitivity analysis in test conditions was carried out. It is found that inverter type system can deal with the various load when compared with fixed type system, and system design at the outdoor condition 2/1℃ is important.

N/A Objective : To investigate whether there is any differences between normal pregnancy (NP) and spontaneous abortion (SAB) regarding estrogen receptor (ER) expression and telomerase activity (TA) in the chorionic villi and decidual tissues. Methods : Chorionic villi and decidual tissues were obtained between 6 and 9 weeks' gestation from 14 patients with SAB and 17 normal pregnant women who have undergone an elective abortion. All tissue samples were assayed for ER with enzyme immunoassay and also TA was analysed using telomeric repeat amplication protocol. Results : A significant decrease in ER expression (2.81±2.77 fmol/mg of protein; p<.001) was demonstrated in SAB group compared to that of NP group (4.56±1.85 fmol/mg) in decidua. However, no significant difference in ER expression in chorionic villi was found between the two groups. SAB group showed significantly lower levels of TA than that of NP group in both chorionic villi (21.4% vs. 82.4%; p=.002) and deciduas (7.1% vs. 52.9%; p=.009). Conclusion : Our results suggest that decreased level of ER expression in deciduas might cause decidual senescence and eventually, spontaneous abortion.

Growing interest in CO₂ capturing from industrial processes and storage in underground formations is emerging from commitments in reducing CO₂ emissions manifested in the Kyoto Protocol. In this paper, CO₂ liquefaction system is treated in focus of liquefaction efficiency & production rate considering experimental study. Presently CO₂ is transported in ships or trucks at a pressure of 14-20 bar. In this reason, the liquefaction pressures of 20, 10, 6.5 bar are selected. Compressor work and cooling capacity are calculated and compared. Also the level of liquified CO₂ is observed and the states in a storage vessel are measured. In order to investigate the effect of intercooling, the compressed gas after compressor work is cooled by ambient air or seawater. In case of applying the intercooling to the system, consuming energy can be saved larger than 20%. In the lower liquefaction pressure, the more CO₂ can be obtained due to higher density. In the liquefaction pressure of 6.5 bar, its CO₂ production is about 35% higher than that of the system with the liquefaction pressure, 20 bar.
