The myo-inositol has a very suitable structure for stereochemical study. By the use of carbonyl com-pounds such as cyclohexanone, acetophenone and furfural, myo-inositol has been into 1,2-O-substituted derivaties. The presence of two contiguous hydroxyl groups in ax. -eq, position is necessary for reaction to occur predominantly. In this case, however, di-O-substituted derivatives have been obtained, in other words, contiguous hydroxyl groups in eq. -eq. position have reacted. The rate constants for the reaction of myo-inositol with carbonyl compounds and activation energys were evaluated. From the values obtained above, it was found that this reaction was pseudo-first reaction and the order of reaction could be represented as cyclohexanone> acetophenone> furfural.
황촉규근(黃蜀葵根) 점액에 관한 연구 : [제2보] 점액내 당류의 검색 [Part Ⅱ] Detection of Sugars in the Mucilage

When the root of Abelmoschus manihot, MEDIC is stored in the water, the mucilage is extracted. The mucilage has contained some of free reducing sugars. We have investigated the change of free reducing sugars by the Bertrand method and also free reducing sugars are detected by paper chromatography and thin layer chromatography. The mucilage is isolated from the root of Abelmoschus manihot, MEDIC and its chemical components are detected. The mucilage and hydrolyzed products are examined by paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography and tested carbohydrates under the usual way. The results are as follow: 1. The mucilage has contained five kinds of monosaccharides which are rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, glucose, galactose and other three kinds of uronic acids. 2. In the mucilage, glucose is the most changeable sugar and the next are arabinase and galactose. 3. Uronic acids, pylose and rhamnose are remaired comparatively longer than glucose, galactose and arabinose in the mucilage. 4. The hydrolyzed products of mucilage consisted of rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, glucose, gelactose, ribose, some uronic acids and other unknown compounds. The essence of mucilage isolated from the root of Abelmoschus manihot, MEDIC is complex saccharide, glucose and ribose are newly certified. 6. We can guess that the components of the mucilage are rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, glucose, ribose, uronic acids and other unknown compounds.
Cyclitol 유도체 합성에 관한 연구 (제4보) DL-epi-inosose-2의 전해환원

To obtain the various kinds of inositol stereomers, we have selected the process of electrolytic reduction of DL-epi-inosose-2 using Ni, Ta, Cu, Mo, Pb, Sn, W, Cd and Hg etc., as cathode. We think that this process gives greater variety than chemical processes. DL-epi-inosose-2 was synthesized by chemical oxidation of myo-inositol, dissolved in aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide, and used as electrolytic solution. To prevent anodic oxidation of cathode products the H-type diaphragm cell was used. As the results of paper chromatography of cathodic products, we obtained the $R_f$ values of myo-inositol and epi-inositol were in good agreement with literature values.

The changes of hydrogen ton concentration, viscosity and free sugars in the water-soluble mucilage of Ulmus Coreana, Nakai root upon storage at 10^{\circ}C were studied. Hydrogen ion concentration in the mucilage changed $pH7{\rightarrow}pH4{\rightarrow}pH6$ or 7. The viscosity of mucilage decreased very slowly. The mucilage contained glucose and galacturonic acid. The hydrolyzed products of mucilage consisted of rhamnose, mannose, galactose, arabinose, xylose, glucose and galacturonic acid. 느릅나무근(根) 점액(粘液)의 액성(液性)은 처음에는 중성(中性)이나 산성(酸性)으로 변(變)한 다음 중성(中性)에 가까워지는 경시적(經時的) 변화(變化)가 일어나며 점액(粘液)의 점도저하(粘度低下)는 황촉규근(黃蜀葵根) 점액(粘液)보다 매우 완만(緩慢)하다. 또 이것은 유리(遊離) 환원당(還元糖)을 함유(含有)하고 함량(含量)은 경시적(經時的)으로 변화(變化)하여 처음에는 증가(增加)한 다음 급격(急激)하게 감소(減少)하며 당함량(糖含量)과 점도(粘度)와의 사이에서 분명(分明)한 비례관계(比例關係)를 찾아볼 수는 없다. 당류(糖類)를 경시적(經時的)으로 분석(分析)한 결과(結果) 황촉규근(黃蜀葵根) 점액(粘液)과는 달리 glucose 및 galacturonic acid등(等) 2종(種)의 당류(糖類)가 검출(檢出)되었다. 그러나 점질물(粘質物)의 가수분해(加水分解) 생성물(生成物)에서 검출(檢出)된 당류(糖類)는 rhamnose, mannose, galactose, arabinose 그리고 galacturonic acid등(等)이며 황촉규근(黃蜀葵根) 점질물(粘質物)에서 검출(檢出)되었던 xylose는 검출(檢出)되지 아니하고 mannose가 검출(檢出)되었다.
