In this research, poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) hydrogels containing zinc oxide particle wereprepared by gamma-ray irradiation. PAAc powder was completely dissolved in distilled water atroom temperature. Water-insoluble zinc oxide powder were added into the PAAc solution andstirred until totally dissolved. Finally, the mixture was irradiated by gamma-ray irradiation tomake crosslinking. The effects of various parameters such as zinc ions’ concentration, irradiationdoses were varied and investigated in detail. PAAc hydrogels containing zinc oxide particle werecharacterized by gel content and swelling ratio. Moreover, the antibacterial properties of thismaterial were evaluated by paper diffusion test against the Gram positive and Gram negativebacteria.

Epoxy resin is widely used as aerospace, automobile, construction and electronics dueto their good mechanical and electrical properties and environmental advantages. However, theinherent flammability of epoxy resin has limited its application in some field where good flameretardancy is required. Nano clay can enhance the properties of polymers such as flames retardancyand thermal stability. In this study, we have investigated the nanoclay filled epoxy composite,which has good flame retardancy while maintaining high mechanical properties. The curedepoxy resins were obtained using an electron beam curing process. The nano clays were dispersedin epoxy acrylate solution and mechanically stirred. The prepared mixtures were irradiated usingan electron beam accelerator. The composites were characterized by gel content and thermal/mechanical properties. Moreover, the flammability of the composite was evaluated by limitedoxygen index (LOI). The flame retardancy of nano clay filled epoxy composite was evidentlyimproved.

Nanogels are internally cross-linked particles of sub-micrometer size made of hydrophilicpolymers and are considered a distinct type of macromolecules, compared with linear andbranched polymers or macroscopic gels. In this study, we studied a method of radiation inducedsynthesis of nanogels, which allows us to obtain tailored intra-molecularly crosslinked macromoleculesof independently chosen molecular weight and dimensions. Thus, we report the possibilityof applying the prepared nanogels using poly(acrylic acid) through electron beam irradiationfor potential application as biomaterials. The nanogels were characterized by scanningelectron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the size and zeta-potential of nanogels were measured bya particle size analyzer (PSA). The nanogels were prepared at an approximate size of 180 nm at100 kGy and were spherical in shapes. The size of the nanogels decreased with increasing irradiationdoses, and the absolute value of zeta potential increased with increasing irradiation doses.

The juvenile ossifying fibroma, differentiated from the large group of ossifying fibroma based on the patient’s age, common sites, and clinical characteristics, is a rare but locally aggressive benign tumor with high recurrence rate. Herein, we report a case of juvenile ossifying fibroma located in the right mandible, which is an uncommon site. A 8-years- old male child presented to the pediatric unit of our institution with swelling on the right mandible. Radiographically, it was presented as an expanded and radiolucent lesion. Histology revelaed hypercellular fibroblastic proliferation with anastomosing osteoid trabeculae with rounded, strongly basophilic calcified mass rimmed by osteoblasts. Surgical management was done, and regular follow-up is advised.

To investigate the effects of different wavelengths of photosynthetically active radiation on the morphology and leaf color changes of a single tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) seedling, we stored the seedling at 10±0.5oC under eight different wavelengths (peak wavelengths; 405, 450, 505, 545, 600, 645, 680, and 700 nm) with a constant photosynthetic photon flux of 3 μmol m−2 s−1 for 28 d. Under the 405, 450, and 505 nm wavelength conditions, the leaves of the seedlings showed vigorous shape with an upright morphology. Rachis elongation was suppressed and hence compact appearance was observed under the 450 and 505 nm conditions. Although the difference in leaf color between before storage and on 28 days after storage was observed under all wavelength conditions, the 405 and 700 nm irradiations changed the leaf color to light green. Application of light-emitting diode (LED) light irradiated from around 450 to 545 nm can contribute to vigorous shape with an upright morphology of tomato seedlings during low light irradiation-low temperature storage.

A theoretical model was developed for parallel-flow rotary kiln and computational study was conducted to find the thermal characteristics. One dimensional model with the variations of heating distribution, length of heating zone, excess air ratio and revolution was considered. The comparison of parallel-flow rotary kiln with that of counter-flow was conducted. It is found that the variation of temperature of solid is not great for the zone that is following flame-heating zone. This zone is good to take the special treatment because thermal deviation is small and contacting time is enough for another treatment. Increase of excess air ratio have the effect of decreasing solid temperature. But this effect of decreasing solid temperature goes small for the great excess air ratio. The heating is efficient for the flame which has the maximum heating at the central region of the full length.
Three staphylinid species (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) in South Korea

Three staphylinid species, Aleochara (Aleochara) coreana Bernhauer, A. (Coprochara) verna Say and Prosthecarthron sauteri Raffray, are recorded for the first time from South Korea. Redescriptions and line drawings of diagnostic characters of all three species are provided. Ecological notes are provided for P. sauteri.
Immature Heterotopic Ossification in the Iliacus Muscle in Spinal Cord Injury - A Case Report -

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a frequent complication associated with spinal cord injury and can lead to significant problems during rehabilitation. Surgical resection of HO could be applied to patients who do not respond to conservative treatment. To reduce the risk of recurrence after the operation, radiation therapy and NSAID or bisphosphonate administration may be utilized. We report the case of a 48-year-old male with a T3-sparing spinal cord injury who underwent successful treatment of immature HO in the iliacus muscle with a combination of surgical resection, radiation therapy, and NSAID administration. 이소성 골화는 척수 손상과 연관되어 발생 할 수 있는 합병증이며, 환자의 재활 치료에 심각한 문제를 야기할 수 있다. 수술적 절제는 보존적 치료에 실패한 경우에 시행한다. 수술 후 재발의 위험성을 줄이기 위해, 방사선 조사, 비스테로이드 소염제 또는 bisphosphonate를 이용한 치료를병행한다. 저자들은 흉추 3번의 불완전 척수 손상이 있는 48세 남자 환자에서 장골근 내에 발생한 미성숙 이소성 골화를 수술적 절제와 방사선 조사 및 비스테로이드 소염제를 병행 치료하여 좋은 결과를 얻었기에 이를 보고하는 바이다.
