The purpose of this paper investigates one of the digitally adapted design methodologies in architecture: CAD/CAM -based digital design process as surface representation process to construct a complex free-from shape. The paper takes as its objective of inquiry a specific computational strategies, playing a fundamental role in curved-form comtemporary buildings which were designed since 1900 and completed until now. The digital design process in such contemporary buildings has typical features that digital template, not mass production but mass customization and additional cost. this paper summarize these features in terms of 'digital tectonics'.

As the world gives rising focus on energy and environment, there is now an emerging need to include performance aspects of sustainable facade in the early design stages. This paper presents the performance based design support tools for sustainable facade that can be variated enhancing daylight index, and shows the benefits of parametric driven façade to reach maximum daylight quality. Through this paper, daylighting & energy analysis was integrated using Grasshopper and Diva for a south-oriented office facade in Incheon, Korea. The parameters of algorithms include several variables of building facade geometry in order to enhancing daylighting performance by changing façade typology. The paper demonstrate that integrating daylighting and energy analysis tools and parametric algorithm to optimized sustainable façade contribute in reaching better daylighting performance.

Reverse Engineering(RE)-based digital design process as surface representation process to construct a complex free-from shape and explore for new architecture. The paper takes as its objective of inquiry a specific set of building intentions, and associated computational strategies, playing a fundamental role in Gerhy's projects the design, engineering and fabrication of surface forms. The digital design process in Frank O Gehry's architecture has typical features that new geometry, structural skin, not mass production but mass customization, new role-model of architect as master builder and cultural transition to collaborative partnerships.

This paper explores the optimization and automation process by the parametric design method and digital tools used to achieve the surface representation and panelization for curved shaped office buildings. In this paper, we suggest the parametric algorithms of dimensional and geometric constraints using the Knowledge-ware scripts embedded in Gehry Technologies’ Digital Project. Knowledge-based design methods of this research systemize the knowledge inherent in experts in a form of data. This knowledge of experts is necessary to promote collaboration between designers and engineers in the process of CAD/CAE/CAM. The ultimate goal of this study is to integrate the process into design, which establishes an integrated process. This integration enables two-way feedbacks among design and construction data by combining design, engineering, and construction.
