Osteomas in the head and neck regions are uncommon benign lesions and usually found in the front ethmoid area. Temporal bone osteoma is an extremely rare entity. When it is located in the temporal bone, it may cause various symptoms such as hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, facial palsy and cosmetic deformities such as auricular protrusion and external mass. We report, with a short review of the relative literature, a case of large osteoma that originated from a squamomastoid portion of the temporal bone in a female patient of 20 years old.

To study the effect of fluoride on the growth of fetal rat calvaria, frontal and parietal bone of 19-day fetal rat were dissected. Explants were cultured with 2.5ml of BGJb media supplemented with bovine serum albumin (4mg/ml) and gentamicin(50㎍/ml) in 35mm plastic pertri dish under 90% humidified atmosphere of 95% air and 5% CO_2 at 37℃ for 4 days. Calvaria of control group were cultured in media without fluoride, and experimental group were cultured in media supplemented with sodium fluoride to the concentration of 10^-6M, 10^-5M, 10^-4M and 10^-3M. After cultivation, amount of synthesized hydroxyproline and DNA content of each group were determined spectrophotometrically as the parameters of bone growth and then compared respectively. The results were as follows. 1. Collagen synthesis was inhibited by sodium fluoride in cultured fetal rat calvaria. And the inhibited rates were tend to increase with the concentration of fluoride, but the increments of inhibited rate with concentration were not significant except 10^-3M. 2. DNA content of cultured calvaria was not affected by the 10^-6M sodium fluoride, but above the concentration of 10^-5M, contents of DNA were decreased to the similar extent by fluoride.
