고등학교 영어교과서에 나타난 동의어 사용 빈도 분포: BNC/LLC와의 비교
문안나 ( An Nah Moon ) 한국외국어대학교 외국어교육연구소 2009 외국어교육연구 Vol.23 No.2
The goals of this paper are to provide the frequency distribution of 20 groups of synonymous words in the 35 high school English Textbooks and to compare the results with those in the British National Corpus (BNC) and Longman Lancaster Corpus (LLC) given in Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE). The comparison mainly focuses on frequency distribution pattern across spoken and written registers. For this study, the reading parts of the textbooks computerized as a corpus and the concordance listings generated by WordSmith Tools 4.0 (Scott, 2004) are analyzed. Analyzing the data gives us the following results. First, the frequency distributions of 11 groups of the synonyms are mostly matched with those of the written register in the BNC/LLC. Second, 6 groups of the synonyms display the same frequency ranking as that of the spoken register in the BNC/LLC. Given the relative proportion of use, however, half of the groups indicate the pattern that is more similar to that of the written register in the BNC/LLC. Finally, the remaining 3 groups demonstrate the frequency distribution different from that of the BNC/LLC. Both the ranking in the frequency and the relative proportion of the use do not coincide with those of the BNC/LLC. Each register the native speakers distinguish has its own preferred word(s) in the group of the synonyms. Given this fact and the results of this study, it can be concluded that for more effective learning of synonyms, the actual use patterns of native speakers across registers need to be reflected in the textbooks.

The purpose of this study is twofold: to examine how the History of the English Language is distributed in the curricula of the Departments of English Education and English Teacher Selection Test in Korea and to explore its effective teaching. According to the investigation of curricular and English Teacher Selection Test, 30 schools among the 32 Schools of Education in Korea offer a course dealing with the History of the English Language, but not one question has been asked on the area since 2001 in English Teacher Selection Test. This discrepancy between the two systems may influence the status of and students' interests in the course. To maintain students' interests and to approach the course in a more practical way, the following is proposed as effective teaching methods in this study: utilizing a list of the questions centered around the properties of Modern English that are seemingly irregular and anomalous as a central goal of the class, utilizing the course in a way of improving students' communication skills and teaching the course using websites.

Reduplicating Verbs in Gothic and Old English
An-Nah Moon(문안나) 한국영어학학회 2010 영어학연구 Vol.16 No.2
The goal of this study is to analyze the reduplication patterns in Gothic and Old English (OE) within the framework of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993, McCarthy & Prince 1993ab, 1995) and to explicate how these patterns are related to each other. The analysis proposed in this study demonstrates that the relation between Gothic and OE can be easily captured through the interaction of the universal constraints that participate in reduplication. In aid of the ranked constraints, the proposed analysis also easily incorporates the segmental changes that the OE reduplicants undergo. Unlike the previous analysis by Kim (1986), no stipulation for the size and location of the reduplicants is necessary in this analysis. The optimal size and location of the reduplicant fall out from the basic tenets of OT such as the permutation of violable universal constraints.

How to teach the History of the English language (HEL) has been rarely focused on in Korea, which can be compared to the situation aborad. The goal of this study is to present a model of teaching HEL for graduate students of English education and feedback from the students who took the HEL course based on the model. Ultimately, this study attempts to encourage HEL instructors to develop pedagogical techniques that reimagine HEL and customize the HEL course for students’ needs. The model proposed in this study was designed to excite students’ interests and active participation in the classroom as well as to enhance their competence as a/n (future) English teacher. HEL based on the model was taught to 13 graduate students: The lectures on the internal history by the instructor, students’ presentation of the external history, and two assignments are the integral part of the course. The students’ background, perception on HEL, and feedback on the course were collected from the questionnaire surveys conducted before and after the course. The results of two surveys demonstrated students were interested in HEL and considered the knowledge on HEL important. It was also shown that they wanted to learn the external history most. The results of the feedback survey showed students became more positive toward their presentation and more interested in the internal history of the English language than before the course started.

The goal of this study is to provide a descriptive analysis of misspelling patterns of Korean EFL adult learners. We collected spelling errors made by 119 university students in Korea from two types of tests we conducted, i.e. whole-word dictation and word-formation writing. The data were analyzed mainly in the two aspects: (1) errors in spelling correspondence in a word and (2) errors in consonant and vowel spellings. The results are as follow. First, in spelling correspondence, Korean university students made mistakes in the order of omission > substitution > insertion > metathesis, regardless of the test types. This result is consistent with many previous studies, but different from the pattern of misspelling made by Korean elementary and high school students. Especially, omissions were found in consonants more often than in vowels, and substitution was the most common misspelling pattern for vowels. Secondly, vowels were more misspelled in whole-word writing than consonants. By contrast, the reverse pattern was strong in word-formation writing. The overall rates for correct spellings are 46.86% in whole-word writing and 76.04% in word-formation writing. These results imply that many Korean university students are not confident in English spellings. (Inha University & Soongsil University)
