        1-MCP Improves Display Life in Begonia × hiemalis ‘Blitz’ and ‘Carnival’

        We investigated the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on ethylene production induced by simulated transport stress in Begonia × hiemalis ‘Blitz’ and ‘Carnival’ to improve the display life in potted plants. The simulated transportation conditions were imposed for 4 days in simulated export containers with darkness, vibration with continuous shaking (150 ± 20 rpm) on a rotary lab shaker, and low temperature (12ºC). Plants were treated with 1-MCP at three concentrations (5, 25, or 125 nL・L-1) and for three different periods (0, 6, or 12 hours) before undergoing the simulated transport stress treatments. Treatment with 25or 125 nL・L-1 1-MCP inhibited the abscission of open flowers by more than 40% as compared to the untreated plants. One week after the treatments, the ethylene production decreased in the plants treated with 125 nL・L-11-MCP for ‘Blitz’ and 25 nL・L-1 for ‘Carnival’. Ethylene production was correlated with concentration and duration of 1-MCP treatment in ‘Blitz’, but not in ‘Carnival’. To reduce flower abscission and ethylene production, thus improve the display life when plants are exposed to transportation stress, we recommend pre-treatment with 1-MCP before packaging, using concentrations and durations specific to each cultivar, 125nL・L-1 for 6 h and 25 nL・L-1 for 12 hours for ‘Blitz’ and ‘Carnival’, respectively.

        Clustering Effects of Metabolic Factors and the Risk of Metabolic Syndrome

        Background: Metabolic syndrome is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Clustering of a combination of individual factors that increase the actual rather than the expected prevalence might be helpful in understanding the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to analyze the most influential factors for metabolic syndrome to assess clustering factors of metabolic syndrome. Methods: Subjects from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) VI were included in the present study. The status of health behaviors was obtained using the questionnaires included in the KNHANES VI. A complex, stratified, and multistage sampling design was used to analyze the data according to statistics from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Results: A total of 2,101 men and 2,831 women aged older than 20 years were included in this study. In men, drinking alcohol more than twice per week was related with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome; while, in women, exercise was related with the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. The clustering effect was observed for more than three metabolic factors. In men, the clustering effect was strongest for the combination of hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hypertriglyceridemia. In women, the strongest clustering effect was observed for the combination of abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration. Conclusion: The health behaviors affecting metabolic syndrome in men and women included drinking alcohol more than twice a week and exercising more than four times a week, respectively; in addition, hypertriglyceridemia most significantly influenced the clustering effect of metabolic syndrome.

        A Study on the Applicability of Language Meme as a Spreading Medium of Juvenile Slang

        As the use of smart phones among teenage became a daily routine, the spreading of slang language in the SNS platform has been immense. As such, this research has focused on the cultural phenomenon acting apart from the users(juveniles) of the spreading of slang as the main cause of the that effects the spreading of the slang as the language culture of the juveniles. This study examines the applicability of the language meme as a language spreading medium by examining it from the viewpoint of the activity of the language meme which is difficult to control by the juveniles themselves. As a suggestion, to observe the juvenile slang spreading stages through the view point of meme, the proliferation is not the juvenile themselves, the selfish gene and the cultural imitator, meme, is the spreading force and the language replication as the contagion through juveniles, that are the optimal psychological and social condition of evolution as hosts. In other words, it is fair th say that a ‘juvenile language (slang) culture’ has been created in result of juveniles reacting to their self-effort for the evolution of meme. A more environmental rather than institutional regulation, in other words, a pan-social efforts to contain the spreading of slang from the assimilation stage is needed, as much as the creating of a wholesome media cultural environment. Furthermore, a continuous guidance for the language is needed from a paternalistic perspective in consideration of the characteristical language psychology of adolescent development. Only, the discussion of a scientific basis and application suitability of the meme phenomenon remains an assignment.

        상하이 러췬사회복지관을 통해 본 중국 민간사회복지관의 발전가능성

        This paper aims at reviewing developmental possibility of voluntary social welfare centers in China through analyzing the developmental process and problems of the Shanghai Lequn Social Work Service that is the first voluntary and professional social service center in China. For the purpose, social welfare reforms of Fudongxinqiu, developmental process and the programs of the Lequn social work service, and its problems. The results are as follows; First, Fudongxinqiu as a frontier of Chinese social welfare reforms has tried professionalization and socialization of social welfare since open policy. Its positive will was a important background of the Lequn Social Work Service. Second, the leading actors were the vice general manger of the Fudongxinqiu’s Social Work Association, Miss Riuxiaofang and the director of the Social Development Bureau, Dr. Maili. However, the real one was the Social Development Bureau which administratively and financially supported the Lequn Social Work Service. Third, the growth of the Lequn Social Work Service totally depended on the government’s support. The major part of its finance is the government’s fund given for managing public programs. Fourth, its financial over-dependence on the government and lack of autonomy make its voluntary characteristics ambiguous. Fifth, its prospects are not positive. Because it is very hard to overcome dependence on government. However, if it can find the way for financial independence, then it will become real voluntary social welfare center.

        Energy-Efficient and High Performance CGRA-based Multi-Core Architecture

        Coarse-grained reconfigurable architecture (CGRA)-based multi-core architecture aims at achieving high performance by kernel level parallelism (KLP). However, the existing CGRA-based multi-core architectures suffer from much energy and performance bottleneck when trying to exploit the KLP because of poor resource utilization caused by insufficient flexibility. In this work, we propose a new ring-based sharing fabric (RSF) to boost their flexibility level for the efficient resource utilization focusing on the kernel-stream type of the KLP. In addition, based on the RSF, we introduce a novel inter-CGRA reconfiguration technique for the efficient pipelining of kernel-stream on CGRA-based multi-core architectures. Experimental results show that the proposed approaches improve performance by up to 50.62 times and reduce energy by up to 50.16% when compared with the conventional CGRA-based multi-core architectures.

        Efficient Fault-Recovery Technique for CGRA-based Multi-Core Architecture

        In this paper, we propose an efficient fault-recovery technique for CGRA (Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architecture) based multi-core architecture. The proposed technique is intra/inter-CGRA co-reconfiguration technique based on a ring-based sharing fabric (RSF) and it enables exploiting the inherent redundancy and reconfigurability of the multi-CGRA for fault-recovery. Experimental results show that the proposed approaches achieve up to 73% fault recoverability when compared with completely connected fabric (CCF).

        Night Interruption Promotes Flowering and Improves Flower Quality in Doritaenopsis Orchid

        Flowering responses under night interruption (NI)condition were determined in Doritaenopsis ‘Fuller’s Sunset’, ‘Green Beer’, ‘Little Gem Stripes’, and ‘Queen Beer’during their reproductive stages. Plants were grown under10/14 h ambient light/dark (control), 10 h ambient light withnight interruption (22 : 00-02 : 00 HR) at low light intensity of3-7 μmol • m−2• s−1 (LNI) and 10 h ambient light with NI athigh light intensity of 120 μmol • m−2• s−1 (HNI) conditionsafter flower spike emergence. Time to visible bud and floweringdecreased more in the plants grown under HNI thanthose grown under LNI or control conditions. The number ofbuds or flowers increased in the plants grown under bothLNI and HNI conditions compared to those grown undercontrol condition for all cultivars. The tallest plants at floweringwere in the HNI group in ‘Queen Beer’, ‘Green Beer’,and ‘Fuller’s Sunset’, however, the plant height was not significantlydifferent among the treatments in ‘Little GemStripes’. NI with low light intensity or high light intensity canbe used effectively to promote flower opening, but not withlow light intensity at flower development stage. To obtainearly flowering with high quality plants using NI treatmentduring their reproductive stage, high light intensity strategiescould be suggested in Doritaenopsis cultivation.

        Dynamic Redundancy-based Fault-Recovery Scheme for Reliable CGRA-based Multi-Core Architecture

        CGRA (Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architecture) based multi-core architecture can be considered as a suitable solution for the fault-tolerant computing. However, there have been a few research projects based on fault-tolerant CGRA without exploiting the strengths of CGRA as well as their works are limited to single CGRA. Therefore, in this paper, we propose two approaches to enable exploiting the inherent redundancy and reconfigurability of the multi-CGRA for fault-recovery. One is a resilient inter-CGRA fabric that is ring-based sharing fabric (RSF) with minimal interconnection overhead. Another is a novel intra/inter-CGRA reconfiguration technique on RSF for maximizing utilization of the resources when faults occur. Experimental results show that the proposed approaches achieve up to 94% faulty recoverability with reducing area/delay/power by up to 15%/28.6%/31% when compared with completely connected fabric (CCF).
