Gimpo is located on the hypothetical diffusion route of rice from the Yangtze River basin to the Korean Peninsula, and was claimed to contain the earliest rice cultivation site in Korea. We found waterlogged rice husks from Tae-ri, Gimpo, but the remains were dated to ca. AD 500, well after the beginning of rice agriculture on the peninsula. The lowest sediment that retained Oryza -type pollen in Tae-ri was not earlier than 800 BC. We found no botanical evidence that could possibly validate the claim that people in this region cultivated rice as early as 2000 BC. The SPD (summed probability distribution) of 282 AMS dates shows that there was a drastic population decrease in the Neolithic communities of the peninsular inland region after 2000 BC. Rice cultivation, if it was indeed practiced by the people of the coastal areas, is very unlikely to have spread eastward. Bronze Age settlements and dolmens distributed across Gimpo suggest that a full-scale transition to rice farming occurred with the immigration of Mumun people.

Geyang Mountain Fortress is, along with Moonhak Mountain Fortress, one of typical mountain fortresses of old time in Incheon region, and it has been considered providing important materials for researches on ancient history of Korea. Hereupon Institute of Archeology at Sun Moon University conducted excavation three times from 2003 until 2008, ‘Discourses of Confucius: wooden pole’ and ‘short necked jars with round bottom’ were unearthed out of Jipsoojung. In 2009 Gyeore Institute of Cultural Heritage carried out the 4th excavation North Gate Site and surrounding ramparts. During the research process, in total 26 structural remain shave been verified. From prospecting survey areas, 19 structural remains were identified, such as sites of building and burials(soohyul), remains of firing and floor heating system, burials(soohyul-myo), and residential areas. Through excavation over all contour of entry way towards gate sites-including north gate sitewere identified, and 7 structural sites were verified: building sites, trace of drainage systems, burials(soohyul) including earthen coffins. Many different artifacts were excavated such as potteries, roof tiles, iron wares, stone wares and other antiquities. Particularly, red roof tiles were excavated from reddish brown clay layer on inner wall of investigating trench in excavation area, and traces of same-drum-width on tiles exhibit style of Goguryo. Deceptively mixed characteristic of Three Kingdoms appearing on tiles make it difficult to decide exact time of the production; however, they are considered having been produced during Shilla era. A wide variety of inscribed roof tiles were verified; dozens of inscribed roof tiles related ‘Joobuto (主夫吐)’ and other inscribed roof tiles containing ‘kan(官)’ have been excavated. In addition, from red roof tiles of reddish brown clay layer, directly inscribed engravings have been identified, some of which contain letter of ‘未’. Given that this research project has been conducted as overall prospecting survey, quite a few kinds of artifacts have been unearthed. If continuous excavations and researches on Geyang Mountain Fortress are made in the future, more comprehensive and detailed information about characteristics and scale of sites will be achieved.
