Youngwoo,Kim. Vol.27 No.2

With the increased need for English in the Korean society, ELT programs need to expand as well. In order to examine whether these needs are being met through academic efforts, the trends in ELT programs and curricula in ELT academic journals published in Korea from 2000 to 2014 were analyzed. Eleven ELT-related academic journals were selected from the indexed journal list of the National Research Foundation in Korea. From the 5,486 articles that have been published, relevant articles were selected using keywords appropriate to the study of ELT programs and curricula. Four hundred and twenty articles were finally selected and then analyzed according to journal, publication year, target institutions, program type, and relevance to the curriculum. The results showed that many articles focus on English programs and curricula at the college level. English programs and curricula in primary schools are another area of focus. Only a few articles address ELT programs and curricula in the middle and high school contexts. ELT teacher training programs were another favorite area of research interest. Some articles discussed the ELT curriculum itself, while others studied topics such as ELT textbooks in the context of the ELT curriculum. Although there have been numerous ELT activities in the private sector in Korea, such as private tutoring, educational institutions (hagwons), and online ELT services, research related to these is seldom found in journal articles. Overall, research on ELT programs and curricula in Korea seems to be carried out according to ELT researchers’ own interests or professional convenience, along with changes in the Korean national curriculum. Some implications from the results of the study are discussed at the end.

2011 Foreign languages education Vol.18 No.3

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has announced an increase in the number of approved textbooks to meet social needs to promote social diversity and creativity. This analysis of Korean government documents related to textbook policy shows that seven out of twenty-four English textbooks became approved textbooks in 2010. Approved English textbooks are limited to special high schools, which makes it difficult for them to receive attention from ELT researchers and professional communities. In this study, as approved English textbooks, business English textbooks for high school learners were chosen and analyzed. It was found that these faithfully fulfilled the syllabus required by the national curriculum. However, the primary approach used by them to teaching and learning English seemed to be the knowledge-delivery method rather than language use and the activity-oriented method. To meet the social needs of using English practically, professional outcomes from ELT research on English teaching/learning methods and on English for specific purposes (ESP) need to be incorporated in approved English textbooks.

Vol.54 No.11

As cloud environments become more commonplace, computing resources become available as needed without the initial investment in IT infrastructure. As a result, the resource utilization on servers is increased and the usage portion of being wasted is reduced as well, compared to that of the existing on-premises environment. In traditional cloud computing environments, techniques such as load balancing, auto-scaling, and DRF have been used. However, these techniques do not take into account the resource utilization rate of users, which causes resource shortage. In this paper, we track the resource usage rate of each virtual machine and estimate the resource demands of virtual machines based on usage rate. In addition, weights are set and used to utilize recently recorded resource usages. Furthermore, we developed a resource allocation scheme(vRUF) to maintain fairness, in terms of resource requirements and overall system performance. By using our proposed resource allocation technique, it is possible to mitigate the resource waste and shortage.

2005 Foreign languages education Vol.12 No.1

Recently many universities have established new departments or programs for TESOL typically their career information has been just for future English "teachers." As our society becomes very specialized, career possibilities for TESOL majors are now wide and varied, and the students are allowed to choose diverse career tracks. However, there has been no attempt to provide more specific career information regarding the whole TESOL area for the students. This study investigates professions categorized under the term of English education by TESOL -related institutions or companies. Research into job markets and interviews constitute the main methodology of this study. The TESOL field can be divided into two major areas: "English Teaching" and "Materials Development." Occupations related to English Teaching include institute lecturers (infant, elementary school, middle/high school, and adult level), TESOL researchers, teachers (elementary school and middle/high school), and professors. Secondly, a career in Materials Development can be advanced in the fields of off-line materials (planners and editors, writers, advertisers, marketers), on-line materials (cyber-education planners, Web PD, multimedia material planners and developers), and imported materials (planners, presenters, marketers). The career information in this study will help students to understand the whole field of English education and to identify appropriate jobs to suit their interests and qualifications. In addition, departments or programs gem-ed to TESOL will be able to offer more in the way of concrete educational input, to the benefit of their students and their curricula.

Vol.5 No.1

New Normal is a term in business and economics that refers to financial conditions following the financial crisis of 2007-2008 and the aftermath of the 2008-2012 global recession. The term arose from the context of cautioning the belief of economists and policy makers that industrial economies would revert to their most recent means post the 2007-2008 financial crisis. The 2010 Per Jacobsson lecture delivered by the head of PIMCO, Mohamed A. El-Erian, was titled Navigating the New Normal in Industrial Countries. In the lecture El-Erian stated that Our use of the term was an attempt to move the discussion beyond the notion that the crisis was a mere flesh wound... instead the crisis cut to the bone. It was the inevitable result of an extraordinary, multi-year period which was anything but normal. The term has since been used in a variety of other contexts to imply that something which was previously abnormal has become commonplace. After a period of subdued growth in the aftermath of the global downturn, growth in the United Kingdom has picked up since early 2013 to 2.6% in 2014, the strongest performance among G7 countries that year. Against the background of subdued growth in the euro area, the recovery has benefitted from the cumulative impact of wide-ranging domestic policies. Mid-sized Businesses (MSBs) make up a dynamic sector of corporate Britain that has the potential to be a powerful engine of growth for the UK economy as it forges a path to recovery. Yet for too long this potential has been hidden - overlooked and neglected by government, financiers and the media. MSBs have specifically been identified in the Government's Growth Review as the 10,000 or so firms in the UK which do not fall into the category of either small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) or the biggest firms. They account for around one fifth of private sector employment and turnover but represent only 0.2% of UK firms. They are distributed across all regions of the UK and are represented in a range of sectors. Such businesses are often both well established and successful and include a number of well known family businesses. MSBs are a highly diverse group of companies that already make a big economic contribution. However when compared with larger firms in the UK and oversea companies, there is clearly a significant untapped growth potential waiting to be released. If the UK can create the conditions that have enabled MSBs in other countries to flourish, they believe this would enable them to play a vital role in transforming UK economic growth.

Vol.19 No.2

English language teaching (ELT) is recognized as one of a number of interdisciplinary academic fields: with linguistics, education, and literature considered as some of its sources. Thus it is natural that the question of how academic ELT books are classified be raised, but an answer has not yet been firmly established in the ELT field. This study tried to answer the question, and proved that the classification of ELT books published in Korea is not implemented. The study notes that Korean ELT books do not provide any classification information, such as Korea Decimal Classification (KDC) or Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). This study also examines the use of keywords in ELT academic books and journal articles. As human knowledge becomes digitalized, electronic searching of information has become more common, particularly through the Internet. A crucial aspect of the search process is the use of keywords, and their role between searchers and electronically stored material. Thus, keywords will also become an important index of journal articles as government-sponsored institutions start to archive academic journals in databases. However, the result of this study shows that keywords of ELT journal articles are not applied systematically; rather individual researchers decide which keywords to use. The result is ad hoc use of keywords. Based on the results and related discussion, a conclusion and suggestions in using classification and keywords are provided.
